Diocletian’s Palace.

The city lies within the Roman ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as Diocletian’s Palace . The palace was originally the residence of the 4th century Roman Emperor Diocletian and its walls serve today as an outer boundary of the historic city center.

Nowadays, the walls of the ruins house cafes, clubs, residences, and other establishments. Behind the walls of the ruins are residential buildings made of limestone and marble.

At the northern entrance to the ruins is a statue of Grgur of Nin, who was the first bishop to conduct church services in Croatian, not in Latin. A local legend says that rubbing the statue’s toe will bring you good luck.

You can visit the ruins of Jupiter’s temple and climb the bell tower of St. Domnius Cathedral to see Split from a 360 degree view. The St. Domnius Cathedral originally served as Diocletian’s mausoleum, which in later centuries was turned into a church by Christians. The church and cathedral are now some of the oldest Christian churches in the world.
