National Park “Curonian Spit

A unique natural and anthropogenic formation, which became a World Heritage Site in 2000. The site is 98 km long and 400-3800 m wide and has several absolutely different landscapes: from tundra bog to sandy desert. People come here to watch the migrating birds and visit the sandy beaches: on one side of the spit – sea, on the other – freshwater bay.

Kaliningrad Cathedral

This now defunct temple has had time to be Catholic and Lutheran. It is one of the rare representatives of Gothic architecture in Russia and a symbol of Kaliningrad. After the war, its ruins were nearly demolished, saved by the Kant’s grave. The restoration began in 1992, so the interior decoration and most of the buildings are newly designed, but carefully restored according to prewar photo archives.

Fish Village

A must-see gem in Kaliningrad. A fully restored Prussian style pre-war quarter of the city, a grand historical and ethnographic complex. This piece of old Königsberg concentrates several museums, hotels, exhibition centers, catering establishments, and hiking spots. The disadvantage is that you can not walk around all of them in one day, you will have to stay longer.

Promenade and beach of Svetlogorsk

Svetlogorsk embankment is not just strengthened and improved coastal strip, but also a real entertainment complex with lots of cafes, concert venues and cozy nooks. Completely rebuilt after a storm in 2012, which destroyed the structure. Now the beach behind the promenade is being washed up, and quite successfully: a dozen meters have been already reclaimed from the harsh Baltic. Promenade and beach in Yantarny

The promenade in Yantarny is unique: it partially passes over the water. Two kilometers of wooden bridge made of Siberian larch cross the flooded amber pit with swan families and stop at the sandy beach. The latter is fully landscaped: from toilets and cafes to the green recreation area, buried in foliage and decking for moving. The sand is snow-white, the beach itself is perfect order and cleanliness.

Baltic Spit

It is also called the Vistula Spit by the Poles. It has 30 km of the total length of 65 km of the natural object. It is a sand dunes, overgrown with mixed forest. The Russian part is separated by a navigable strait, so you have to get to it by water (motorboat or ferry). Tourism here is predominantly wild, although there is a tourist center. People come here to bathe and have a rest, and also to visit the abandoned German military objects.

Vishtynetskoe lake

A deep-water lake nicknamed “European Baikal. Its waters abound with fish, including valuable species, such as European eel and burbot, and coastal thickets abound with birds. There are several bases and camps scattered along the coast, people come here to fish and just relax on the wild sandy beaches with snow-white sand. Freshwater diving is perfect here – the water is phenomenally clear.

Dancing Forest

This artificial pine wood near the Curonian Spit got its strange name because of curved and sometimes twisted tree trunks. But it is nothing extraordinary: caterpillars damaged seedlings and provoked abnormal growth. Now thousands of trees seem to be doing an intricate dance. There are also the ruins of the pre-war German gliding school.

Müller Heights

The hill amidst the forests of the Curonian Spit was named after forest ranger Mueller who invented a way to stop the dunes from creeping up and turning the entire coastal area into a sandy desert. At the highest point is the observation deck, from which you can admire the work of the German, who rescued the unique nature of the region over a century ago. You can get there by car or from Kaliningrad by bus to the village Morskoye.

Pillau Citadel

An old Swedish fort of the 17th century near Baltiysk. Visiting the fortress entails some difficulties. So during the naval exercises, access is closed. Visit exclusively by excursion groups, formed in the museum of the Baltic fleet. The fort has a rich history. During the Second World War the impregnable citadel was stormed by Soviet soldiers, and even with a cursory examination of the impressive ruins it is possible to assess the extent of the feat.

Fort № 3 – King Friedrich-Wilhelm I

Powerful fort built in 1879, defending Koenigsberg. So far you can see the fortress only from the outside – restoration works are underway for a long time. In addition to the rich purely military history, there is a real detective story connected with the citadel: according to rumors in its hidden dungeons were hidden treasures of the Prussian Museum. Many treasure hunters long to wander its casemates in search of valuables.

Fort no. 5 – King Friedrich Wilhelm III

The garrison of this late 19th century fort put up a fierce resistance during the WWII. A few casemates and bunkers were saved. Nowadays there is a memorial in honor of the Soviet soldiers, and an outdoor exposition of weapon systems that took part in the storming. Every spring a historical reconstruction devoted to the capture of the fort is held on the territory.

Museum of the World’s Oceans

Located in Kaliningrad, this maritime museum covers everything related to the sea, from fauna, hydrology and navigation to the history of shipping, including a thematic library and an active eco-station. There are small exhibits as well as real ships, a submarine and whale skeletons. The museum organizes conferences, scientific work and several clubs.

Baltic Fleet Museum

Located in Baltiysk, housed in the former court of Pillau, a building constructed in 1903. The museum presents the whole history of the Baltic seafaring. The funds contain about 20 thousand items, including photos, documents, uniforms, weapons and model ships. Some halls reproduce ship rooms: sailor’s compartments, officers’ quarters, and combat units of ships.

Amber Museum in Kaliningrad

Museum exhibits are devoted to everything related to amber. Among the tens of thousands of exhibits is the largest “sun stone” in the world, as well as works of art of all kinds: mosaic panels, fine carvings. Of particular interest is the collection of “frozen time”: insects and even small animals, trapped in resin drops millions of years ago, and the restored elements of the Amber Room.

Museum and Exhibition Complex “Amber Castle

The village of Amber, where the museum is located, is located near the Baltic amber deposit, which contains 90% of the world’s reserves of amber. Svetlogorsk cableway

Slopes to the sea in the resort of Svetlogorsk are steep, even on equipped paths to get to the beaches is problematic. But due to the hilly terrain here it was possible to equip a cableway, which has become a local landmark. A funicular connects the beach and the Svetlogorsk-2 station. Its length is 175 meters in one direction and it has 20 cabins with the capacity for two adults (160 kg).

Kaliningrad Zoo

Opened by the Germans in 1896 as a small zoo. It was closed during the First World War, but suffered the greatest damage after the Second, when only 4 pets survived. The USSR rebuilt this major European zoo from scratch. Now there are more than 3500 animals of about 300 species, including red-listed ones. There is an oceanarium, serpentarium, collections of insects, amphibians, birds, and large mammals.

Church of the Holy Family.

Former Catholic Church, now the Kaliningrad Philharmonic Hall. Its special feature is the presence of an organ with 3,600 pipes producing 44 registers. It hosts organ concerts and trains musicians to play this complex instrument. The interior was originally designed to improve the acoustics and the organ here has a stunningly clear sound that resonates with the room, which is valued by organ lovers.

Juditten Kirche

A catholic church, later evangelical parish church, today an orthodox convent and at the same time a historical monument. It was built by the Teutonic Knights. Pillau lighthouse in Baltiysk

Operational 33-meter lighthouse in the harbor of Baltiysk. It was preserved since 1902 almost unchanged, because it was not damaged during the Second World War, the retreating Germans only spoiled the equipment. There were always problems with the ascent to the observation deck: then prohibited, then allowed again. Therefore, most likely, you will be able to admire the monumental building only from the side, at its foot.

Castle Insterburg

Castle of the Teutonic Order established in 1336. Repeatedly rebuilt after being destroyed in the wars. Seriously damaged in a fire in 1949, now partially restored by enthusiasts. On the territory there is a historical medieval camp. There is a museum exposition, a large-scale diorama, and a working smithy. It regularly becomes a place for medieval battle re-enactments.

Amalienau historic district in Kaliningrad

You can visit the old quarter of Koenigsberg which was slightly affected by the war and therefore saved the authentic atmosphere of the German town of the beginning of the last century. Although most of the old houses are stylized modernes, the streets of the neighborhood perfectly capture the spirit of the Kaiser’s Germany. The Königsberg Exchange Building

It’s a majestic building that stands apart from traditional German architecture. It was built by the Bremen architect Müller, but it was designed in the Italian neo-Renaissance style. The building that was bombed during the war was rebuilt, preserving the facade design, but the interior decoration was altered: there was no need for the huge inner shopping area.

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Kaliningrad

New temple in the style of the Vladimir and Suzdal architecture. The first built Orthodox church in the region, all other religious buildings are former German churches. Accommodates up to 3000 parishioners, there is a parochial school, a conference hall and a refectory. It is a temple of military glory in memory of the Russian soldiers who fell at Königsberg for several centuries.

Queen Louise Bridge in Sovetsk

The border bridge that connects the Russian town of Sovetsk and the Lithuanian town of Panyamunė. In 1944, the structure was blown up by the retreating Nazis, and Soviet engineers had to rebuild it. The bridge was restored to its original appearance by replacing only some details, such as the bas-relief with the profile of Queen Louise on the arch with the Soviet coat of arms. After the restoration in 2002, the structure was restored to its original appearance.

Amber Hall Variety Theater

A modern concert complex on the shore of the Baltic Sea in Svetlogorsk. In addition to the concert hall for 2,000 seats with an orchestra pit, it has a cinema, a huge conference hall, a cultural and business part and a restaurant. A branch of the Maritime Museum has found a place. The 2015 theater is grandiose: marble and granite are everywhere, along with hi-tech elements of metal and glass.

Lake Tikhoye in Svetlogorsk

A shallow artificial lake, created by the Teutonic Knights. It is surrounded by park and is a favorite vacation spot of families of Svetlogorsk. Here you can rent a boat or a catamaran, sit in the shade by the shore or take a jog around the pond. But it is not recommended to swim in it: the bottom has not been cleaned for a long time and is seriously littered in some places. The more so, the depth is rarely more than one meter.
