Nostalgia for my childhood – Wismar, Schwerin, Stralsund (Germany)

Once as a child I spent some wonderful years in Germany. We lived with my parents in Wismar (my dad was in charge of accepting ships under construction at the Wismar shipyards), and we had school in Schwerin. It was a long time ago, but the memories begged me to go back there again. Besides this interest was fueled by the information that Wismar and Stralsund were included in the World Heritage List in 2002 and are protected by UNESCO. We had wanted to go back, but we felt sorry for the vacations in Europe, and this year we had a few free New Year’s Eve days and decided to devote them to the nostalgia of our childhood. After meeting the New Year at home, early in the morning on January 1 were the only car on the Russian-Polish border. The roads in Poland were also completely empty. Until lunch, it seems, everything was closed in general, only filling stations were functioning, where Poles bought alcohol, apparently not enough … ;-) The Polish-German border – the border crossing is empty, not a single soul, the cars go without slowing down. Total 8.5 hours, 725 km, and we are in Wismar.

Wismar Historical reference: Wismar was founded in 1229. Just 30 years later, little Wismar entered the Hanseatic League as an equal partner of such cities as Lubeck, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Riga …… Then in 1648, when the Treaty of Westphalia was signed as a result of the 30-year war, Wismar was handed over to Sweden. And it remained under Sweden until 1903, and now belongs to Germany. Wismar is a maritime city, which means you have to go to the Old Harbor. Swedish guards from 1800 met the ships directly at sea. They stood at the entrance to the harbor and showed the water level in the harbor directly from the ships sell smoked fish. This is the last brewery in Wismar which is 555 years old this year. In medieval times in the city there were more than 150 breweries, beer was very important for the citizens, they not only drank it themselves, but also exported it. I do not know how it used to be, but now the beer is very tasty. This house stands right over the water, there used to be a fishmonger’s shop there. Boats came under the house and unloaded fish or loaded finished products Throughout the old town stretches an artificial canal, it was built in the 13th century And this is Pig Bridge – on this street herds of pigs were driven to sell In the Middle Ages the city was entered through 5 gates, only one has survived Old Town Square Dark-red brick house – one of the oldest in the city, built in 1380. It is now a restaurant and hotel called “The Old Swede”. We stayed there, a large comfortable room with windows overlooking the square cost 45 euros (without breakfast).

We could wander endlessly through the streets of the strange city, and it was a pity we didn’t have so much time.

Schwerin Historical reference: Schwerin – the capital of the state of Mecklenburg – Eastern Pomerania. Founded in 1170.

We went to Schwerin for one reason: to see Schwerin Castle. The castle was remembered from childhood memories, though then he began to fall apart, and now the restoration of the outer facade is almost finished and zakom now shines with numerous towers and spires The castle is located on an island in the middle of the lake, during its construction they used a bunch of different architectural styles, probably all this gives him a really fantastic charm. And around the castle terraced gardens, greenhouses, rocky grottoes, green lawns with flower beds

One thing is bad that the winter is cold and windy, a little has wandered and want to go to a warm restaurant, although it is very dangerous after a few times you can kiss goodbye to the figure, the portions are very large, and the beer is delicious.
