The 30 best sights of Tomsk – description and photos

Tomsk: fabulous huts, Siberian cuisine and 250 days of frost

Tomsk is a small in size, but huge in scientific and industrial importance Siberian city. There is a lot to see here: entertaining architectural eclecticism, breathtaking panoramic views of the Tom River, the famous university, unusual monuments and museums. A couple of days will be enough to see all the sights of Tomsk.

I recommend planning more time for the visit – there are many colorful cafes and restaurants with interesting local food, which is physically impossible to try in a short time. One acquaintance even said he takes a ticket to Tomsk once a month to eat local venison chebureks. And I have been here four times, and each time in a new season. I would love to share my impressions and tell you what to see in Tomsk.

Tomsk sights

The city is a little over 400 years old, it was founded in 1604 as a fortress at the confluence of the Ushayki River into the Tom. But people lived here long before that. Proof of this is the archaeological finds. For example, in the Camp Garden were found Paleolithic site, settlement of I century BC, medieval mound burial mounds and other ancient monuments.

In the 18th century Russia expanded its possessions, the borders moved to the south and east, and Tomsk ceased to be a defensive point. Because of its location between east and west, the city developed as a commercial center, especially when they built the Siberian road from Moscow to Kyakhta.

In 1804, Tomsk became the center of the Tomsk province and then the cultural and economic center of Western Siberia. The population grew rapidly thanks to gold mining in the region.

At the end of the 19th century, the first universities beyond the Urals were opened here, and Tomsk was nicknamed “the Athens of Siberia. The Great Patriotic War played a major role in the city’s development: leading Soviet enterprises were evacuated here, and local production tripled.

Today, Tomsk is a major scientific and industrial city. The administration plans to expand it and modernize it. The main attractions of the city are concentrated in the center, and so you can easily get around in a couple of days.

Ushayka and Tomi embankment

This is a historical place – this is where Tomsk was founded. There is a small elevation from which you can see how the Ushayka flows into the Tom. The view is not just panoramic – it’s as if “wide-angle”: it seems that you are looking at two rivers at once, although, of course, this is not the case.

It is pleasant to walk along the embankment in any weather – both in hot summer and in snowy winter, when the river surface and the adjacent land form a single and endless white expanse. You can go here from Lenin Square – the way lies through a beautiful platform with fountains. And then there is a monument to Chekhov.

Chekhov Monument

This is an ironic monument, as Tomsk people call it. Anton Pavlovich visited the city on his way to Sakhalin and stayed for a whole week. Chekhov immediately disliked Tomsk and said that the only decent place in the city is a tavern. Opposite it is the monument.

Camp Garden

A huge area of 40 hectares (this is like 16 Red Squares in Moscow or eight Palace Squares in St. Petersburg) is located on the right bank of the Tom River. The garden received its name from the camps of the Tomsk Infantry Regiment, which were stationed here in the XVIII-XIX centuries. You will see the Eternal Flame and a sculpture of Motherland, steles with the names of the dead Tomsk citizens.

The garden is a favorite place for photo shoots. There are a lot of relict trees, views of the Tom, the hills. Also here live squirrels, who are not afraid of people and take treats right out of their hands.

Resurrection Mountain

Voskresensky Hill is primarily interesting for its monuments. There is a sculpture of ruble (100 times bigger than the coin itself) and an amusing monument to a lover – the sculpture of a man, who is clinging to the window from the outside. The author of the composition is sculptor-parodist Oleg Kislitsky. He created it on the basis of numerous anecdotes about the husband who came home unexpectedly and the lover who was caught unawares.

A monument to the lover always lifts your spirits. I think it’s one of the sculptures that makes Tomsk so original and peculiar

Resurrection Church

10 Oktyabrsky Vzvoz Street

A great illustration of Siberian Baroque architecture: five unusually shaped domes adjoin the bell tower, and stucco elements are placed on the smooth walls. It is fortunate that the church survived the Soviet period: in the 20th century it was used as an outhouse for a long time, and in the 1990s the parishioners returned here.

The church is open every day and entrance is free. The schedule of services can be found on the official website of the church.

Lenin Square

One of the most striking places in Tomsk is the central square. Here you can fully appreciate the architectural eclecticism of the city. You will see and Epiphany Cathedral of the late 18th century next to the monument to Lenin, and the building of the bourgeois council, built in the classical style of the early 19th century, and a shopping house Kukhteriny in Art Nouveau style, and Soviet multicolored Tomsk Drama Theater, Philharmonic Society and the regional administration. The location of the square is also unusual – it is a peculiar peninsula, bounded by the Tom and Ushayka.

Near the square – a sundial with an arrow in the form of a horse, the Duma bridge with rostral columns built in 1916, a monument of 2004, established in honor of the 400 th anniversary of the city, a small Iberian chapel… Everywhere you look – a complete variety of styles, which makes the place seems special, unique and memorable for a lifetime.

White Lake

White Lake (photo)

The White Lake is located on the Voskresenskaya mountain in the historical center of Tomsk.

There are many legends claiming the origin of the name of the lake. They say that the lake used to be surrounded by a birch grove, that there was a special white fish, but, most likely, the lake was called White because it used to be called Ak-kul (from Tatar “white, clean”). In ancient times, it was believed that the lake water is curative, so it often treated various diseases. Also, people used the lake water to drink and used it to extinguish fires.

In 1870 the lake was changed: deepened, given a different shape and planted with trees. During the war, the lake was used by the Tomkabel plant, which polluted it. In 1950, the water was purified, and a monument to the first Tomsk cosmonaut Nikolai Rukavishnikov was installed on the shore.

Now the lake is a favorite place for meetings and walks. On its shores fishermen gather, and along the shore there are many cafes for tourists and locals.

White Lake

White Lake (photo)

There are several variants explaining the name of the lake. Some believe it was so named for the white maples planted along its shores in the 19th century.

Others are inclined to a legend dating back to the distant 17th century. At that time near the lake the Eushtinsky prince Toyan held back the advance of the steppe Vikings. The leader was suddenly seized by an illness. He decides that these are machinations of evil spirits brought upon him by his enemies. He could find refuge from the illness in water, but not in plain water, but in white water. And to make it white in the lake, he had to sprinkle blood on it. The prince’s daughter volunteered to help her father. She stuck a knife in her chest and fell into the water, bleeding. Then the water in the lake boiled, foamed and became lighter. The prince dipped his head and immediately recovered.

Joke or not, the water in the lake was clear for a long time until the war came. The Tomkabel plant, which had been converted to manufacture military equipment, used the pond for technical needs. The lake was instantly polluted.

Resurrection Church

Church of the Resurrection (photo)

From the very beginning the church was part of the Holy Virgin Dormition Monastery, which was closed in the twenties of the 17th century. The church was built of wood. Over time, the building became dilapidated, and then burned down as a result of a strong fire. And then, at the end of the XVIII century, it was decided to rebuild it. The next church building was made of brick.

In 1807, it first opened its doors to the congregation. After 90 years, a huge 16-ton bell was hung in the belfry, but it was not destined to hang long. At the beginning of the 20th century, during the Soviet regime, all Orthodox churches were subject to ruin. The Resurrection Church did not suffer such a fate.

Bolsheviks took all the precious utensils out of the monastery, and the bell was melted down. Then there were several attempts to reopen the church, but it did not open for long. In 1937 they wanted to demolish the church, but the building was left for government needs. In the 1940s, for example, there was an archive of documents on the Far East.

The Resurrection church reopened in 1990. Before that, it had been restored for a long time.
