Kibbutz Eilon in northern Israel – a great place for family vacations

Kibbutz Eilon in northern Israel – a great place for family vacations

In the West Galilee kibbutz Eilon, founded by sturdy Polish Jews in 1938, the pastoral ideology of the modest huts is intricately and irreversibly mixed with the new flavors of privatization that compelled the residents to forgo communal meals and feasts and do their own thing. One of these activities was the cimmeras that have become a permanent part of the Israeli landscape, in this case transformed from the old dormitories into a modest hotel room, where the cheap rooms have all they need and nothing extra, and the more expensive ones, in addition to comfortable beds, new bathrooms, kitchens and cozy lounges, also have a view from the window. Needless to say, the scenery is spectacular, overlooking the natural hardwood groves that cover the slopes of the Galilean mountains from the kibbutz to the Lebanese border, the proximity of which does not prevent you from enjoying a legitimate vacation, the quiet, the local swimming pool . And other kibbutz charms, including the possibility of “creative” activities for children, whom parents, relaxed in the summer sun, can hand over to local – to the extent strict, but democratic- educators. Parents themselves, meanwhile, can pay a visit to the kibbutz businesses – shops for making wonderful mosaics and tasty herring.

Kibbutz Eilon in northern Israel – a great place for families

Kibbutz Eilon is splendidly located – splendidly located for Israeli tourists fleeing the bustle of the city at a reasonable distance. Vacation-seekers can get there by train, after experiencing on the way a mild shock of collision with other civilizations: African – when the carriage is filled with mysteriously smiling, silent Ethiopian Jews, and Middle Eastern – from Acre to Nagaria, when your neighbors are slyly smiling Arab with a bunch of wives in halabiyas and bright-eyed kids. When one or the other takes a seat next to you on a bench, you suddenly realize that next to you is a representative of “another planet”, and with these philosophical thoughts you arrive at the final station – Nagaria, from which it’s a half hour drive to the kibbutz.

And those citizens who are concerned about keeping their own cars, after checking the road map, will easily get to Eilon by the appropriate three-digit numbered highway, paying tribute to the excavations at Acre, swimming at Ahziv, stopping at Jehiam Fortress and taking a ride on the Rosh HaNikra cable car, where the descent to the mysterious dark green wet caves are guarded by countless packs of impudent well-fed pigeons. Do not forget about the museum culture – the museums at kibbutzim Lochamey Hagetaoth and in Hanita (5 minutes drive from Eilon, on the next hill), so that the tired travelers will get to Eilon, which is the starting point for hundreds of hiking trails, already full of impressions.

Hiking enthusiasts in the Galilee can easily book rooms in the Kibbutz hotel, “Bein ha-Nahalim”, for a few days, and walk for all those days. (“Bein ha-Nahalim” means “middle of the river”, and the rivers – the largest in the Galilee – are Betset and Kziv, modestly described on topographic maps as streams, but after the winter rains they overflow to such a terrible state that in particularly dangerous areas are even “knee-deep”, as one of the local trail experts told me.) At about 300 meters from the kibbutz, which is located in the Nahal Betzet nature reserve, the entrance to another nature reserve, Goren Park, where the number of marked hiking trails and the diversity of choices makes me feel a little dizzy, As you approach the edge of the precipice and discover the beautiful views of the ruins of Montfort Fortress, which are wrinkled in history and protrude from a curly forested mountain that can be approached from several directions, including on foot, by starting in the Goren Park.

Directly from the hotel, you can go for a walk along the Betzet stream (especially since a tour with a very nice guide is included in the price), passing on the way cozy cave and a mysterious, perfectly roundish hollow in the ground, between the stone walls which are planted in an obviously geometric order God knows when and what the gray olive trees. After a half an hour of wandering along goat paths among chipped black boulders and wild fruit trees you get to the ancient mighty dairy, which was only a part of the TgatovU system that operated on this mountain a couple of thousand years ago. Wandering even lower through the Mediterranean small-leaved oaks and huge fig-trees, you finally come down to the brook, the murmuring of which has a very salutary effect on the heated nerves, and along the bed of which there are huge, old maples that give cool and dense shade, like the surrounding rocks. Only a person of iron will can resist the temptation to climb to the lower branches of the maple and sit above the stream, dangling his feet in the running water. Individuals who are more impressionable and receptive to the beauty of nature and, in particular, the soft proportionality of the Israeli landscape will go on walking after a short rest, losing count of the curves and loops of the creeks.

Active tourists can opt for the 4 hour ascent to the Keshet Cave, which is best reached at sunset, and sigh in amazement as the sun sets behind the Rosh HaNikra rock, illuminating the valleys with its last broad beams, and the herd of goats climbing for the night in the cave, whose arch serves as a shelter from potential inclement weather. For the less romantically inclined, you can take the paved road from Eilon to Keshet without spending half a day on the arduous climb and use the services of trained young men who offer daredevils to try their hand at rock climbing and free-flying on a rope into the 60-meter emptiness. When falling down from the top of the arch in the Keshet cave, through the gap of which the forests below open up, one can still marvel at the black-moist color of the ground in the cave, which is due to the goat droppings that have accumulated over the years.

Nahal Betzet, Nahal Kziv, Goren Park, Monfort, Keshet Cave, Ein Karkara, Sharah – these are only a few of the routes that can be started from the kibbutz on foot, without bothering to check the oil and water levels in the car. On the other hand, even for the more adventurous, who are used to spending their free time in relative immobility, can join the participants in the world famous Tkeshet Eilonu violin classes, attend classes, concerts of Israeli and international celebrities (Shlomo Mintz, Itamar Golan, Ida Haendel) and watch the world famous violinists “polish up” before going on to achieve their own careers.

It is worth noting that at Eilon they also teach the violinists how to shoot an arrow, having invited a famous coach for that, rightly thinking that business makes time, and fun makes time, and the muscle groups involved in archery and playing the skipka are the same. On August sunsets, there are violin concerts in the kibbutz, both in the brand-new hall rebuilt by the innovative architects from the former chicken coop and in the glade, in the “shell” under the flags of 20 countries, when students, teachers and simply people on vacation gather to listen to the sounds of violin, who booked cimmers for the workshops. Sharp violin passages rush into the air like arrows from a bow, and transparent evening charm adds idyll to the overall atmosphere. After soaking up the sounds, you can let yourself end a hard day at a local restaurant (the rumors of whose cuisine have already spread all the way to Tel Aviv) – the Bein ha-Nahalim, whose wooden body hangs over the cliff and from which, after refreshing your drink with red wine and stuffed mushrooms, you will feel sure that vacationing in the Galilee is a duty toward yourself and your country.
