The history of Suomussalmi goes back to the days when its location was the border between East and West. The eastern border of Suomussalmi was established in 1595 and is thus the oldest state border in Europe. The locals had close relations with the people of Vienna up to the independence of Finland. During the Vienna War, soldiers and civilians fled to Finland.

Subsequently, many houses and land were built in the town of Raatta. The current building, which was built in 1923 as the Raatte Security Museum, served as a customs post. The Guard Museum (Raatte Security Museum), located at the east end of Raatte Road, was restored in 1939. This museum tells the story of frontier guard life before World War II. The museum was opened in the summer of 1988. Admission to it is free.
