“Bavarian Versailles in the middle of the lake

Herrenkimsee Palace: Bavarian Versailles on a lake

Herrenchiemsee Palace is the most luxurious of the fairy-tale castles of Bavarian King Louis II, which became the “swan song” of the misunderstood by the world genius romantic. During the tour you will get acquainted with the life of the solitary monarch, see the unusual fountains and sculptures in the magnificent park, taste the delicacies of Bavarian cuisine and enjoy the extraordinary nature of the Herreninsel island.

What awaits you

The king’s desire to build Versailles on Bavarian soil was more spectacular than the “model”. The halls are much more spacious, the rooms are more luxurious. Everywhere hangs the spirit of French absolutism. The palace is situated on an island on Lake Kimse, the largest Bavarian lake, and is surrounded by water and mountains. Looking for privacy, Louis could not find a better place for the castle than the island of Herreninsel (“men’s island”), deserted after the departure of the monks. The drive through the lush Bavarian countryside and across the emerald waters of the lake to Herrenkimsee Palace by car is a delightful journey in itself.

With a return ticket for the palace, you can also visit the Louis II Museum, which is located there, with its unique exhibits – the King’s christening shirt, his photographs, portraits, original furniture from the Munich residence and models of the “crazy” projects of the fairy tale king.

The fountains and sculptures in the park are another reason to immerse yourself in Louis II’s fantasies: mythological characters, gods, dragons, half-human half-terrestrials. In hidden corners of the park you can find the remains of the railroad, which delivered construction materials to the center of the island, and nature lovers can feed wild deer right out of his hands.

On the territory of the island there is also a Museum of the Augustinian monastery and the Museum of the Constitution (it was here in 1948 when the convention on the drafting of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany took place). If you want, you can also have lunch here. On the menu of the family restaurant in the former abbey you can taste regional specialties: Cheese pâté Obatzda, liver dumpling soup, white sausages, fish platter Herrenchiemse or a grilled dish for two “King Louis II”. Beer from the historic brewery, schnapps from fruit grown right here on the island and herbal liqueurs made by the distillery of the neighboring Benedictine convent. The special Bavarian whiskey and airy desserts, I’m sure, will please you separately.

If you wish, we will go to the neighboring “women’s island” – Fraueninsel, where there is an active Benedictine convent for over 1300 years. Here, following a long-standing nun tradition, the nuns make original marzipan in unusual shapes: fish, flowers, island motifs or gingerbread, with only the best ingredients in the recipe: almonds, walnuts, honey, flour and spices. You can buy these and other gifts and souvenirs in the monastery shop or, after wandering along the coast, visit authentic pottery or glassblowing shops of local craftsmen.
