Baku, Azerbaijan: capital of the country of fire

Baku. The capital of the country of fire.

Vitaly Yurochkin aka lastdjedai writes: “I do not remember when I wanted to go to the Caucasus. Georgia has long beckoned me with mountains, khachapuri and “Tarkhun”, and with stories about the Baku boulevards my colleague Azif – my previous work colleague from Sakhalin – buzzed my ears.

I still had some miles on my Aeroflot bonus account, so for the May holidays I decided to go there. Aeroflot does not fly to Tbilisi, so the airport of arrival on my ticket was the glamorous and contrasting Baku.

In the morning Sanya and Galya flew back to their home town Novosibirsk, and I rented an apartment (which incidentally is the most budgetary option for a stay in Baku, and even 50 Eurikov came out for the day. Hostels are not here, and hotels are quite inexpensive price tag …) and pochapala further explore the unknown, explore the boundless) The choice was small, so I again went to the old town) We just walked around the perimeter the day before. I thought to myself, “There’s a lot more to see there”).

At this fiery Baku ended for me, Tbilisi and hospitable Georgia ahead!

Baku, Azerbaijan: capital of the country of fire

Baku is the capital of the “Land of Fires” as Azerbaijan is popularly called. The origin of this nickname has several versions .

According to one version, “Azerbaijan” is derived from “Atropaten”, the ancient king and priest, whose name is translated as “keeper of fire”. That is, “the land of the guardian of the fire” is Azerbaijan.

According to another version, the ancient people living on the Absheron Peninsula worshipped Fire, which often burst out of the ground when natural gas was released.

Our contemporaries, the Azerbaijanis, find this justification for the name: they say there is a lot of light and lights from ultra-modern buildings in Baku at night.

Undoubtedly, this Muslim country, which until recently was part of the Soviet Union, arouses a healthy curiosity. Since the capital is the “face” of the country, it makes sense to consider Baku.

2. The Flaming Towers

Even during the day, when the towers do not emit light, they make a strong impression on visitors to Baku. First of all, its modern shape, resembling tongues of flame, and its size: 161.165 183 m. The mirrored surface completely covered with LED-screens also looks unusual. And in the evening they really are like a real fire, glow in different colors and suddenly demonstrate a number of pictures.

At the same time they are multi-functional buildings, where hotels, hundreds of offices and apartments are located. The towers were recognized as the “best hotel and tourist center” in 2013.

3. Maiden Tower.

This is a long-standing symbol of Baku . During its existence, the tower has become surrounded by so many legends that it is difficult to discern where the truth lies. Historians tend to believe that the literal translation of the name “virgin tower” means that it has never been captured by enemies. Presumably, it served as a beacon and a defensive structure.

The tower is protected by UNESCO. But it is not just a historical site, but also a place of urban festivities to this day.

4. Palace of Shirvanshahs

  • The Divan-khaneh building,

The Divan-hane has a very peculiar construction: inside there is a hall with five arches connected with a gallery. There are a total of eight faces in the hall. The mausoleum has the same number of faces. Prayer Hall is also very interesting: it is made in the form of a cross, while the tomb has a more traditional rectangular shape.

4. Palace of Shirvanshahs

The material used in the construction of the palace is interesting. It is Apsheron limestone, which after some time after treatment changes its milky-white color to golden-yellow. This peculiarity of the stone in combination with the originality of masonry where rows of narrow and wide stones, horizontal and vertical masonry, emphasized the play of colors on the walls. In addition, a certain pattern formed on the walls.

During its existence the complex was repeatedly destroyed by the Safavids (Iranians), the Turks, and the army of Peter I. By the mid XIX century it was virtually a ruin. In 1857 the ensemble was given to the Russian military department. But the palace suffered from it no less: the purpose of the military was to make it convenient for storing weapons and ammunition. For these reasons, it was rebuilt, significantly changing its historical appearance.

Fortunately, after the Revolution of the 17th century the Commission for Protection of Cultural Heritage was established. In 1932 by the decision of the Commission the restoration of the Shirvanshahs’ Palace as a historical monument of the medieval period of Azerbaijan began.

In 1964 this architectural monument was taken under protection of the state and became a museum-reserve. Today it is a non-trivial architectural creation, which is included in the UNESCO lists.

The palace walls and buildings still hold many mysteries and riddles. The purpose of some structures is disputed by modern scientists. Perhaps one day we will know the truth.

5. The Bathhouse of Haji Gaib.

It was found during excavations relatively recently, in the mid-20th century. The medieval baths surprise with their elaborate bathing facilities. Like modern facilities of this type, the bath includes a pre-bath, locker room and bathing hall. In the hall there are two pools – a hot and a cold one. Strange as it may seem, the ancient hall is equipped with warm floors: under plates of stone covering the floor, pipes are passed through which hot air enters, as a result of which the comfort of the visitors is ensured. In those days, quite rich people went to the bathhouse. The place was even used for making deals.
