The ancient city of Aleksandrov in Vladimir region is a popular tourist center, part of the Golden Ring of Russia. In the 16th century, the residence of Ivan the Terrible was located here: several buildings from that period have survived to this day. There are also sights of other epochs in Alexandrov: mansions of XIX century, ancient monasteries and temples, modern museums and parks.

Alexandrovskaya Sloboda Museum Reserve

Museum-reserve “Aleksandrovskaya Sloboda” works in an old fortress, which began to be built in the XIV century. Ivan the Terrible turned it into his royal residence and actually moved here the capital of the state. Since the 17th century the Uspensky Monastery had been functioning here, and in 1919 the museum-reserve was founded.

Why visit .

The complex of the settlement is well preserved, and here you can see:

  • Trinity Cathedral of the beginning of the XVI century;
  • Church of the Intercession, one of the first hipped stone temples in Russia;
  • The Church of the Crucifixion with a high bell tower;
  • the Church of the Meeting of the Lord, decorated in the traditions of northern Russian architecture;

You can walk around the museum on your own or with a guide. There are separate expositions and interactive programs for tourists inside some of the historical buildings.

Why visit . Walking along the embankment, you can see its main attraction – the figure of Ivan the Terrible, as well as the sign “I love Alexandrov”, against which people often take photos. In addition, there is a shop-cafe with a large assortment of local honey, a playground and benches for resting. You can also admire the views of the river Seraya from the embankment.

The building of the city station was erected in 1903 on the place of a dilapidated wooden building. Today it is not only used for its intended purpose, but also serves as home to the railroad museum.

Why visit . Alexandrovsky Station is an architectural monument of classical style: note the rusticated facades and triangular pediments. Nearby you can also see several art nouveau buildings of the early 20th century – one of them has a luggage compartment.

Marina Tsvetaeva’s sister Anastasia lived in Alexandrov. The famous poetess visited her several times in 1915-1917. A museum was opened in the house where the Tsvetayevs lived in 1991. Now its main exhibition occupies two neighboring mansions in Military Lane.

Why visit . During the tour, you can see a collection of original exhibits related to the Tsvetayev family: books, manuscripts, furniture, musical instruments, and paintings. A memorial garden is preserved near the house. In addition, the structure of the museum includes a separate exhibition “Aleksandrov – the capital of 101 kilometers”, dedicated to Soviet repressions. It is situated in the building of Baranov manufactory.

The manor, which now houses the art museum, in the 19th century belonged to the Alexandrov merchant Pervushin. The museum center was opened here in 1989.

Why visit . The collection of the art museum has carefully preserved the historical interiors of the merchant’s mansion. Here you can see the original furniture of the 19th century, against which the paintings are displayed. The exposition includes both paintings and masterpieces of photography, samples of arts and crafts. You may also note the architecture of the manor, which is a monument of neoclassicism, decorated with exquisite moldings, pilasters, and rusticated walls.

Connoisseurs of jewelry craftsmanship have something to see in Alexandrov: here is a unique museum of semi-precious stones. It appeared thanks to the All-Russian Research Institute of Mineral Synthesis, whose staff collected unusual artificial crystals. The exposition was opened to visitors in 1964.

Why visit . The museum operates in the Research Institute building on Institutskaya Street, with guided tours by the research staff themselves. The collection includes both natural and synthetic stones, as well as finished products made from them. During the tour, you can learn how artificial crystals are created for jewelry and stones for complex technological processes.

At the entrance to the territory of Alexandrovskaya Sloboda you can notice the over-the-gates church, located at the Holy Gate. This is the church of Feodor Stratilat, built back in the XVII century.

Why visit . The church is a monument of temple architecture. In layout it resembles the temples of Vladimir and Suzdal: it is a three-part building with a simple decor, topped with neat chapels. The church remains active, and regular services are held here. There is a small museum in the cell next to the church that tells about the Monastery of the Assumption.

The Trinity Cathedral is one of the oldest in Aleksandrov, it was built in 1509-1513 and was part of the complex of the Assumption Monastery. The project was created by Italian master Aleviz Novy. In the XIX century the temple was supplemented with small domes in the corners, but in Soviet times they were removed. During the antireligious campaign of the 1930s the cathedral was closed, but after the war it was reopened and is still working.

Why visit . The Trinity Cathedral is an architectural monument, the same age as the temples of the Moscow Kremlin, not inferior to them in historical value. The white-stone building was built in the strict Byzantine style. Its distinctive feature is the ancient gates: they were brought into the city as trophies from Novgorod and Tver by Ivan the Terrible.

The church, built over a bell tower, was built in the XVI century and is considered as the most ancient tent bell tower in Russia. In the XVII century, during the reign of Ivan the Terrible, a one-storey annex with cells was added to the building.

Why visit . The 56-meter bell tower church is one of the tallest buildings in the city. The church is an architectural monument of federal importance, restored and in good condition. The church is located in a picturesque place, so its background is often photographed. During a tour, you can take a look inside the church: some of the original historical interiors have been preserved, including an ancient tile stove.

Because of numerous reconstructions, the church looks asymmetrical, but it retains the characteristic features of Old Russian architecture: the building is crowned by 5 closely placed chapels and is complemented by a hipped bell tower. Why visit . Today, the Nativity Cathedral is in good condition and is considered an architectural monument of the Empire style. The majestic temple with white facades is crowned by a golden onion head that shines in the sun. There is a park near the church where you can relax.

Lake Dichkovskoye is a natural body of water located within the city of Aleksandrov, as well as an aquatic natural monument. The origin of the lake is glacial, it is fed by underground and rainwater. The lake has an area of 20.5 hectares, its depth in the middle reaches 15 meters, the width of the protective zone is 1 kilometer, and its age is approximately 30 million years.

Dichkovskoye is a very picturesque lake. Especially magnificent is its eastern slope, where the pine forest grows and there are steep cliffs. It is believed that the lake got its name because of the abundance of game in its vicinity. At present Dichkovskoye bioresources are small. The lake is inhabited by pike, crucian carp, bream and other fish. Nowadays it is a favorite place for swimming and having a nice rest.

Monument to Lenin in the town of Alexandrov Vladimir region was opened November 1, 1967, a week before the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Then, in Soviet times, it was a significant event for the local residents. Sculptor Y.G. Neroda and architect A.N. Dushkin came specially to the opening of the monument.

At the end of 1967 by consent of the citizens of Alexandrovsk Revolution Street was renamed into Lenin Street. It became the main street of the city of Alexandrov. Old communists and their young supporters gather together at the Lenin monument until now, on Lenin’s birthday on April 22 and the anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution on November 7.

On November 1, 1971, a monument to the warriors who died during the Great Patriotic War was erected in the square near Iskozh club at the expense of the plant’s employees. The pedestal and the monument were made by the plant workers themselves. There is a memorial plate “Eternal memory” at the base of the pedestal. The monument depicts a warrior with uncovered head, who looks toward the old cemetery, where many fallen Soviet soldiers are buried. Some of them were natives of the city of Aleksandrov, some were redirected from the besieged Leningrad to the local hospital.

Karin field

Karin field is located near the town of Aleksandrov. Once Karin settlement was a part of the palace parish with Alexandrov Sloboda as its center. The field was mentioned in the annals at the time of the Polish-Lithuanian invasion. Here the troops of Prince M.V. Skopin-Shuisky fought with the armies of Sapieha, Polish interventionists, in the autumn of 1609. The battle ended in the victory of the Russian troops.

At the battle site a memorial stone was installed, a festival with the reconstruction of the battle is held annually, an inter-regional program of patriotic education of youth “Under the banner of the prince. By the beginning of the festival the expedition “Under the princely banner” returns. Its participants, having passed the way of a liberation campaign of M. Skopin-Shuisky – the route is Novgorod – Torzhok – Tver – Kalyazin – Pereslavl-Zalessky – Alexandrov, camped near the Lake Karin. On the eve of the festival is an evening of bardic patriotic songs.

In Alexandrov, in August 1898, on Institutskaya street, a monument to soldiers-internationalists was unveiled. It is located near the plant named after the 50 anniversary of the USSR, the meeting was opened by P. Beletsky, director of the plant. He told about the idea of creation – it was decided to create a monument at the time when the Soviet troops were withdrawing from Afghanistan. Sergey Romanov, Galina Nesporova (mother of a fallen soldier), Vladimir Perfiliev (participant of the Great Patriotic War) opened the monument.

The author of the monument was Grigory Chrednichenko, and the composition was made and installed by Semen Lashinker. In 1898 the cost of the monument was 150 thousand rubles. There is a tablet on the stone near the obelisk with the names of the citizens of Alexandrov who defended their country and died in international war.
