8 Traditional Turkish Dishes Worth Trying

Baklawa

Baklava is a sweet dish which is a favorite among devotees of Turkish, Balkan and Armenian cuisine. It represents several layers of thin dough layered with butter. The main filling is the various additives in the form of crushed nuts, pistachios and cinnamon. This is topped with honey syrup. Turkish baklava is a must for every fan of sweets.

Icli Kofte

İçli Köfte is a traditional Turkish dish: small, fried patties, characterized by a special shape, inside which there is beef, lamb or camel meat with onions and bulgur grits. Such a mixture is wrapped in previously prepared dough, forming small, round puffs. Afterwards, this mixture is fried in hot oil. These pastries taste delicate and do not contain too much fat.

Jacik / Cacik

Cacik (sasik, cacik) is a cold Turkish soup based on sour milk with cucumbers and herbs. It’s not even a soup, but more of a refresher. Jacik is the perfect food for hot weather! Jajik is similar to our kefir-based ocroshka. Turkish jacik is a slightly different version of the Greek dish jacik . In Turkey, jacik is a yogurt-based soup with the addition of green cucumber, mint, and hot red pepper. This combination results in a delicate and incredibly refreshing dish that goes well with heavy and greasy Turkish cuisine. Unlike its Greek counterpart, jacık can be served as a separate dish.

Kadaif / Kadayif

Kadayif is a perfect and delicate Turkish sweet, melts in the mouth and gives a feeling of real bliss. It is another very sweet Balkan dessert, based on sugar and caramel. Just like baklava, it is made of several layers of thin dough, layered with butter and all sorts of delicious fillings. Lahmajun

Tradition once prescribed that they be made so small that you could spoon about 40 pieces at a time, but now they are made much larger.

Traditionally, the main ingredient is special bulgur, but it can be successfully replaced by couscous.
