10 must-see places to visit in China
The Forbidden City is located in the center of Beijing, north of Tiananmen Square. It served as the residence of the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties from 1420 to 1911, when the last Chinese emperor abdicated the throne. The Forbidden City was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987. There is no better place to get an idea of how the emperors lived (previously it was a secret, as entry to the Forbidden City was forbidden to mere mortals). The Forbidden City has over 980 buildings from different eras. One of its features is that all these buildings are surrounded by a moat, which is 52 meters wide and 6 meters deep. It is also worth visiting the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan), a huge complex of temples to the south of the Forbidden City. For more than five hundred years, it was one of the main holy places in the country: the locals prayed to the sky to get a good harvest. Also impressive are the greenery – centuries-old Chinese cypress trees, some of which are more than six hundred years old. The entrance fee is 35 yuan.
Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is the largest architectural monument in the world. It runs through the northern part of China for 8,850 kilometers! Its construction began more than two thousand years ago. Impressive! In fact the Great Wall of China consists of several interconnected walls built by different dynasties until 1644. It can be accessed in several sections at once, one of which is in close proximity to the Chinese capital.
Tiananmen Square is the main symbol and heart of Beijing. There are massive parades and rallies and it’s no wonder because the square is the largest in the world. This place is famous for the fact that here in 1949, Chairman Mao proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and 40 years later the shooting of a student demonstration. Tiananmen Square is a favorite stroll spot for tourists. Every day in the morning and evening here you can watch the ceremony of raising and lowering of the national flag by soldiers of the Chinese army.
Terracotta Army Museum
In 1974 a terracotta army was discovered in Xi’an province, which, according to historical facts, was buried as early as 210 B.C. with Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (he first unified the warring states and founded the Qin Dynasty, ending fragmentation). The emperor wanted living warriors to be buried so that they could guard him in the netherworld. But as a result, the living warriors were replaced by their clay copies. Curiously enough, the statues themselves are unique and differ from each other: the warriors have individual facial features and their armor. Colossal work, given that archaeologists have found more than 7000 such statues!
Giant Panda Breeding Center in Chengdu
The city of Chengdu in Sichuan province will be of interest to those who love pandas because it has a panda breeding center. According to experts, there are less than 1,000 giant pandas left in the world, most of which live in Sichuan province. In this center pandas live in near-natural conditions. Early hours (about 8 – 10 am) are recommended for a visit, because the pandas sleep for the rest of the day (starting at noon). A large number of tourists come to Chengdu every morning to watch the pandas lazily eating bamboo. The entrance fee to the center is 30 yuan.
“The Trail of Faith in Zhangjiajie
Not far from Shanghai, not so long ago, an attraction for true extreme people was opened – a 60-meter glass “Path of Faith”, which encircles the mountain Tianmen (the height of the mountain, for reference, – 1,430 meters!) and leads along the slope of the cliff. It’s true. Only really brave people can dare to take such a walk. The mountain itself is located a few kilometers from the city of Zhangjiajie. “The Trail of Faith is not the only reason to come here. There is also one of the most amazing caves in the world, called “Heaven’s Gate”.
The Huangshan Mountains
The Yellow Mountains (Huangshan) are one of the most visited places in the Middle Kingdom. These mountains were formed more than 100 million years ago, and last year they became famous for being the prototype of the soaring Pandora Mountains in the movie Avatar. The Huangshan Mountains have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the area in which they are located has become a national park. You can climb the mountain peaks on foot or by cable car. Not far from the park is the city of the same name, which is connected by transport links to Shanghai.
Rice Terraces in YuanYang County
Many people have seen pictures of Chinese rice terraces on the internet. But it is one thing to look at pictures and another to see it with your own eyes. The rice terraces in Yuyang County in Yunnan Province are among the most scenic in the world. The best time to visit is from November to April. There are viewing platforms on the terraces from which you can admire the rice valley and the work of local people. You can get to Xinzhen (the closest town to the terraces) by bus from Kunming (the capital of Yun’an Province).
The main dish of the Chinese capital with more than half a century of history – Peking duck – is at the top of every tourist’s “must do” list. So, although it may sound banal, it’s a crime to leave China without having tried the local duck recipe : ) There are a lot of Beijing duck restaurants in the capital, it makes no sense to list them all.
The ancient city of Pingyao
You can’t say you’ve gotten to know China just by visiting Beijing, Shanghai, and other major Chinese metropolises. To get to know traditional China, you need to go to the “outback”. For example, in Pingyao. This ancient city was built in the IX century BC (. ), and the modern architectural look is more than seven hundred years ago. Since then he did not change it. Completely preserved city wall, which surrounds the old Pingyao, as well as many historical sites – temples, palaces, pagodas, which reflect the cultural heritage of the country. Quarters of the old town are built with traditional Chinese houses, there are more than anywhere else in China – about 4000! Pingyao is the only city in the country that has preserved the art and culture of Ancient China. Locals strive to preserve the authentic look of the city and admittedly they succeed.
