Tourist Greece. Milatos

Holiday at the resort of Milatos!

The traditional Cretan village of Milatos captivates travelers with its picturesque scenery of olive groves, emerald valleys and silvery coves with beautiful beaches. There are cozy hotels and small family hotels, traditional Greek tavernas and souvenir shops, lots of attractions and everything you need for a comfortable stay.

Geographic Location of Milatos

Milatos is located 34km north of Lassithi, the capital of the region of Agios Nikolaos and 16km east of Hersonissos, on the west coast of the Gulf of Mirabello. It is part of Lasithi prefecture, the region of North-East Crete, province of Mirabelo.

Beaches of Milatos resort

Milatos’ coastline is woven out of a string of rocky bays with gorgeous beaches, bathed in the silvery green of olive groves and the bright turquoise of the sea. Travelers come here to enjoy the beauty of the place, as well as the opportunity to be close to the main cities of Crete – Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion and Hersonissos.

At a distance of about one kilometer east of the village are several enclosed coves with narrow sandy beaches. Despite the protection of the coast by the high cliffs, there are always heavy waves, which almost completely cover the beaches.

The main beach of Milatos is also a few hundred meters away from the port. It has pebbles and rocks in places and the sea is always stormy. It is the biggest beach of the resort and its main advantage is the location near the village, as there is practically nothing on the coast.

In the village itself, next to traditional Greek tavernas, fish restaurants and the harbor, there is a small sandy beach that almost never has waves. This place is chosen by travelers with children for its comfortable entrance to the sea and well-developed infrastructure of the coast.

Attractions in the resort of Milatos

Around Milatos you can see the ancient Minoan city, which was destroyed in the III century BC and is mentioned in the works of Homer as one of the seven cities that took part in the Trojan War.

Or you can go to the abandoned village of Fratias, which houses the church of St. John, founded on the site of an ancient monastery. The church itself was built in the 90s of the XX century, but the monastery is mentioned in the historical documents of the XVII century. A two-story building with large rooms, stone walls, a stove, staircases and water storage tanks has been preserved from the building of previous centuries.

Milatos Cave

The most famous attraction of the Milatos resort is the cave of the same name. It is not so much a picturesque as a tragic place in the history of the Cretan people. During the Turkish occupation of the city, many people tried to hide in the depths of the cave. After a long siege, the Turks captured the cave, killing almost all the people, exhausted from hunger and thirst. To commemorate this event in 1935, a temple was built inside the cave with a necropolis in which the bones of the victims are kept.

Bufos Center of the Minoan Civilization

Half a kilometer from the resort of Sissi, on Kefali Hill between the beaches of Avlaki and Boufos, is an archaeological excavation area begun in 1960 by the scientist Costas Davaros. The investigations revealed traces of city walls that date back to 1350-1250 BC, a necropolis of 2100-1800 BC, as well as the remains of pottery. There is also a great view of the Selinari Canyon, connecting the area with eastern Crete and the sea.

The House of Vrahassi

Vrahassi House is a traditional Cretan house in a typical village of Vrahassi near Neapolis. The house itself was built back in 1880 and nowadays it is used as a place for a show dedicated to the Cretan country life. Here you can see furniture, books, photographs, farm implements, crockery, textiles and much more.

Response: Excursion to Milatos Village (Greece, Crete) – A cozy village far away from the civilization.

After finishing our excursion at the archaeological museum of Heraklion, we wanted to visit some distant village. Apparently, this desire was inspired by one of our previous visits to the village of Mochos. We looked at the map and we chose the village Milatos, which unlike Mochos, was located on the seashore.

We planned our route in such a way that we could walk along the coast while admiring all kinds of beautiful scenery.

In one of these picturesque places we stopped and found a peculiar bay where there were small comfortable beaches.

The color of the water was so amazing that we could not resist and, in addition to a photo shoot, decided to take a little swim.

The descent down was quite steep, but we had no problems with it. All kinds of boats with tourists came here from different places and organized mass diving and swimming.

After some refreshment we continued our way. We drove for a while along the serpentine mountains to the outskirts of Milatos. In some places the road was quite narrow. If we came across an oncoming car, we had to slow down and pull over a bit.

But here we had a great scenery with a small local church waiting for us. We couldn’t help but stop and admire such beauty.

Then after driving into the village itself and down the main street, we drove right up to a small local pier. There were a small number of fishing boats on the pier. We really liked the lampposts. We even imagined how beautifully they shine when darkness falls and how romantic this place becomes.

Tourists vacationing there, lounged on lounge chairs and basked in the sunlight. Many swam right beside the pier.

Unusual view created a breakwater, located directly behind the pier itself. It seemed that one of the giant “hedgehogs” was about to roll right over some boat.

On the right side of the pier was a spacious pebble beach. On it for some reason we did not see any tourists.

The pier itself was accessible by car and could be accessed by any boat, which was very convenient for local fishermen.

After a short walk along the shore, we worked up an appetite. It was about time for a meal. Despite the small size of the village, the choice of taverns was quite large for such a settlement. They were located here along the coast and beckoned travelers with their interiors and smells. Almost all the taverns had the traditional Greek colors of blue and white.

The local cuisine was excellent. Having refreshed, we decided to move on to new horizons.

Passing through Milatos we were struck once again by how narrow and at the same time cozy the Greek streets are.

Along the usual serpentine roads we climbed the mountain and from there we could admire Milatos again, but from the bird’s eye view.

We had a very pleasant impression of Milatos. Rest in such a village will suit fans of quiet and peaceful environment with a minimum of people on the beach, where there is no noise from cars and from the various disco clubs. Here you can be fully alone with nature and a break from the bustle of the city.

Well, our journey continued further. At first we planned to visit again Agios Nikolas, which we liked so much during our previous visit. Especially since it was relatively close to our location. But on the way our plans changed a bit and took on an almost adventurous nature. We ended up at the Panorama Tavern on the side of the mountain.
