Before the pandemic. What does it matter? Do you have statistics to refute what I said? That the endless flow of buses going through the Aranyaprathet / Poipet crossing from Thailand to Siem Reap dried up in 2019?

I see, theorist. I entered, last time, in March 2022. If the test was positive, the quarantine could be served at the tourist’s convenience, but needed to be coordinated. Everything was very correct, of the hundreds of people who passed ahead of me, there was not a single positive test. At this point I propose to end the clarification.

There is no need to be snarky, esteemed one! Especially for you, I looked up the “extreme” visa in the current passport – 2017. The exact number of Cambodian border crossings I find it difficult to name, but it is definitely not only Phnom Penh airport, but also five land crossings, some more than once and in different directions. Can I show you the stamps? Have you ever crossed a land border? Now to the point. I will ask questions one by one, so you will not be tempted to pile everything up again. I wrote that the specifics of Cambodia is a lot of traffic through the land crossings. Is there anything you can argue specifically about that, dear “practitioner”?

Hot Finnish chaps, would you clarify for me the answer to the question-will they let me into Cambodia without vaccines or will I have to sit in quarantine?

11.07.2022 The Cambodian government has lifted the mandatory seven-day quarantine for travelers who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19. Beginning today, however, travelers will be required to take an antigen or rapid test upon arrival in Cambodia and will have to pay for the test. Cambodia will now charge a $5 fee for rapid diagnostic tests. Unvaccinated Cambodians are exempt from the fee. Unvaccinated travelers also include those who have received only one Covid-19 vaccination. If the test is positive but the symptoms are mild, the traveler will be allowed to be treated at home. However, if the infected person does not have an adequate place to receive care and treatment, he or she will be isolated for treatment in a place designated by the government, and the cost of care and treatment will be covered personally. Travelers who test positive for Covid-19 and develop severe symptoms must be treated at any licensed Covid-19 hospital, and these foreigners must pay the cost of treatment. Unvaccinated tourists who test negative are free to travel around the country, as are any fully vaccinated travelers. Although mandatory quarantine for unvaccinated travelers has been lifted, the Ministry of Health recommends that everyone observe health precautions: 3 rules and 3 guidelines. Three rules: wear a mask, wash your hands regularly and keep a distance of 1.5 meters. Three recommendations: avoid close and confined spaces, avoid crowded places and avoid touching each other.

As of January 2022, yes, the flow has dried up, no Thai buses have been seen in the parking lot of the complex. And almost no buses at all.

Looked up Timatic, read this thread.

Please confirm that I am not wrong!

Data: RF citizens, with Sputnik V QR codes, fly Phuket-Siem Rip, and in 2-4 days back. As far as I understood, no tests are not needed, no quarantine will not be enough a certificate from the State Service. The visa is issued on arrival. Is it correct?

Have a good mood, stay positive and have a new and interesting journey!

Holidays in Cambodia – 2021. Prices, reviews, pros/cons.

Edited by

During our six-month trip through Southeast Asia, a real find was Cambodia, which I had hardly heard of before. Except from rare friends who dropped in there for a couple of days from Pattaya. Beach holidays in Cambodia are not very popular among Russians, although the beauty is not inferior to the neighboring Thailand.

I and my boyfriend traveled around all the major attractions and stayed a total of 20 days in Cambodia. And today I’ll tell you about it.

Contents

Visa to Cambodia (30 days)

A visa for Russians in Cambodia is necessary. You can make it in advance:

  • at the embassy in Moscow (16 Starokonyuchenny Lane) – for $30 and 1-3 days
  • On arrival at the airport.

Officially the visa costs $ 30, but the cunning border guard will try to take an extra “five. Do not fall for this scam. If you do not have a 3×4 picture with you, you will have to pay another $2 on top. We were getting a visa for Vietnam at the border and proved to the border guard that the visa is worth exactly 30 bucks and not a cent more.

The visa is issued for 30 days, but if the holiday in Cambodia “came up” and want to stay longer, you can extend for another month for $45 at the Immigration office in Phnom Penh. This does not apply to electronic visa ↓

  • Online – for $37, you have to fill out an application online at: evisa.gov.kh.

Print out two copies of the questionnaire, one for the border guard and one for leaving the country.

How much does it cost to go to Cambodia from Thailand? Half of the tourists will choose a 2-day tour, which will cost $150 (from Pattaya) or $200 (from Phuket) per person.

The season for holidays in Cambodia

The season for holidays in Cambodia is about the same as it is throughout Southeast Asia.

  • The dry period – lasts from November to April, and this is the best time to choose the Kingdom to visit. When it does not rain, there is hot sun, but this applies only to the spring months. Therefore, the winter months are considered optimal for travel. The temperature of water and air stays around +28 ° C in the resort area (Gulf of Thailand and Sihanoukville) and +34 ° C in Siem Reap (of course, the sea there).
  • The rainy season starts in May and ends around October. The heaviest rainfall is from July to September. The rains are heavy and tropical, but they don’t last long.

We were in Cambodia in early April, but it was raining already then, so we had problems with the tent (we were looking for an elevated surface and under the roof). The rest of the time it was very hot and stuffy, and we only came to our senses with air conditioning.

Prices for holidays in Cambodia – 2021

The official currency of Cambodia is the riel (KHR). One U.S. dollar = 4,000 riel.

For your convenience all the prices are in dollars, because they are taken everywhere, and the change is given in riels. But I advise to have a small amount of local currency at hand for small purchases.

Let’s talk more about such an important aspect of the prices for holidays in Cambodia.

Transportation

The traffic in Cambodia is chaotic and most often does not lend itself to any rules. For example, the maximum speed for cars is 40 km/h, and for motorcycles 30 km/h. In fact people rush in five on one bike without helmets and at 70 km/h. The road situation in Cambodia in general is dangerous, so be careful.

In the kingdom you can forget about public transport and trains. Tourists move either by tuk-tuk or by bike.

  • Rent a motorcycle for a day – $5-10, for a month – $100. If you do not have the appropriate license, and stop the police, pay from $5 to $20, as agreed.
  • A liter of gasoline in Cambodia is about $1. In the villages it is sold in liter and two-liter glass bottles.

In addition to a motorcycle, you can also rent a bike, it’s cheaper. Where? At the reception of your hotel or hostel or private individuals for $ 1-5, depending on the quality of the bike.

You can rent a car with a driver for the day. For example, arrange with a cab driver at the airport. A more or less adequate price for such a thing is about $40.

Cuisine and Food

  • Street food (shish kebab rice or rice noodles) $1-5 per serving.
  • Average check for supermarket food is $5:

✓ bottle of water, 0.5 liters – $0.4

✓ Angkor beer, 0.33 l – $0.5

The cuisine of Cambodia is not very different from that of Thailand, except for those dishes that were brought here by the French during the colonization. They eat rice, seafood and baguettes.

Prices are adequate, which, however, cannot be said of the resorts. You can have dinner at a street bazaar for a dollar if you buy a couple of kebabs or a papaya salad. The Khmer specialty amok (fish curry) is a little more expensive, starting at $3.

My advice is to be careful when looking for a place to eat. Don’t chase the price, but the quality. I have often seen vendors at street markets drop food on the dirty floor and then quietly put it back. It is doubtful and the meat, which was in the sun all day, and then you can happily fry it.

In Siem Reap, I recommend eating on Pub Street, the most party street. At least there is a constant flow, and the food will not stack up. The main touristy place – Red Piano cafe, they say that Jolie had lunch there during the filming of “Lara Croft. Not bad.

Hotels in Cambodia

Tested by us (but hostels):

  • Siem Reap – Route 66 Hostel
  • Phnom Penh – The Happy House.

Cambodia, so popular among foreign tourists wishing to look at the ancient Angkor Wat, surprised us by the fact that you can get the cheapest hostel room in all Southeast Asia. Only $2 and we slept on a cozy bed in an 8-bed room in the center of Siem Reap. Wonderful, isn’t it?

We also discovered the wondrous world of being able to sleep in Buddhist temples for free. It’s both a new experience and an opportunity to save money. So in Kampongtyam we stayed overnight at Nokor Bachey Pagoda, in Siem Reap at Wat Kesararam.

The best way to find better prices is to check on RoomGuru or Booking. Here you can find a place to stay for all tastes and wallets. Catch a selection:

  • 4* Model Angkor (Siem Reap) – Probably the only place in Cambodia where you can get a good four for only $40. It has its own pool, free shuttle service to and from the airport, and it’s conveniently located to the center.
  • 4* Iroha Garden Hotel & Resort (Phnom Penh) – the highlight is the restaurant in a 1930s mansion and a small garden with a pool.
  • 4* White Boutique Hotel and Residences (Sihanoukville) – the most good reviews of tourists, there are massages, a gym and live musicians.
  • 3* Phoumrumduol Bungalow (Kep) – good-natured host, coloring the evening of tourists with his stories – priceless.

Sightseeing in Cambodia

Attractions in Cambodia

What to see in Cambodia – it’s up to you. There are natural attractions and historical sites.

Natural attractions in Cambodia (prices for 2021):

✓ Bokor is a national park 1.5 hours from Kampot. Worth a visit, firstly because of the Popokville Falls and the real jungle, and secondly because of the abandoned buildings that made the park famous. We liked the Bokor Palace Casino (now restored), the defunct Catholic Church, and the Black Palace better. The park was the resting place of the French colonizers and later of the Khmer Rouge a century ago. From the European representatives to the present day and have survived these buildings.

A bus tour from Kampot costs $25. You can also go on your own on a moped, then – only 50 cents to enter the park.

✓ Ream is a park 20 km from Sihanoukville. Wild animals, birds, a large population of monkeys and freshwater dolphins. You can get to the park either with a guide, by jeep or on foot, but a romantic option would be a boat ride on the Prek Tuk Sap River (about $25).

✓ Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Cambodia. However, its average depth is only 1 meter (in the wet season – all 10). People come here to see the floating villages. But to be honest, all the floating villages are similar to each other, so if you have already seen a similar one in Thailand, you can skip.

Historical attractions:

✓ Angkor Wat – told below.

✓ Koh Ker – tourists rarely come here because almost no one knows about the place. Although it surpasses Angkor Wat itself in mystery and authenticity. The complex is located 90 kilometers from Angkor, in Preah Vihea province, in Kulen district. Tickets cost $10.

✓ The death fields of Choeng Ek and the Tole Sleng Genocide Museum – Speaking of Cambodia, one cannot help but mention its bloody history during the Khmer Rouge period. In the 1970s, more than one-third of the country’s population was murdered and buried. You can read more about the whole history of that period here, but it will be creepy – torture weapons, bloodstains, cameras. I also recommend watching the movie The Fields of Death (1984).

Just entertainment:

✓ Traditional Khmer massage – $10

✓ Drive to and from the islands from Kep or Sihanoukville – $15-25

The Ancient City of Angkor

Angkor Wat in Cambodia is the largest temple in the world dedicated to the god Vishnu (10-12 centuries), consisting of more than 200 monuments. The best way to get to the complex is from Siem Reap, it is 6 km away.

Tickets: 1 day – $ 37, 3 days – $ 62. And yes, it is worth it!

Here, of course, a lot of local “let me help” (ie, walk, take pictures, tell you what I know). In principle, you can take, the price – in the neighborhood of $20-25.

Beach holidays in Cambodia – where is better?

Many people go to Cambodia to enjoy its beaches, which are not yet so crowded with tourists, but very interesting. Where to go?

Resorts of Cambodia – Sihanoukville.

This city is probably one of the most popular resorts in Cambodia. He appeared relatively recently – in 1950, thanks to the French, so it is still developing. Its main attractions are beaches and islands.

  • In the northern part of the city you can find Victoria Beach, which used to be called “Russian”. Later, those after whom the beach was named, began to rest in all parts of the city, and the name has lost its relevance. Located near the port, so the water quality is not a delight. But there are a lot of cafes, as well as accommodation for all budgets.
  • Further south is Hawaii Beach, a favorite of the Khmers. Also, like the previous one, it is not very clean, it attracts black flecks of oil. By the way, there are pine groves on the shore, which allows you to hide in the shade during the baking sun.
  • Next up is Independence . Its advantage is that it is clean, as well as the sea itself.
  • Then comes Socha beach . Most of it belongs to the hotel “five-star” Sokha Beach Resort, so it is very clean. A small piece of the territory is also open to all visitors.
  • The fifth lane for recreation in Sihanoukville – Sirindipiti, one of the most touristy, because it is located in the center of the city. Accordingly, there is noise, clamor, incessant traffic. Of course, this leaves a mark on the place itself, it is not the cleanest.
  • The last beach, the most remote from the city, is Otres. If it used to be one “wild” coast, today it is divided into three zones: Otres 1 – the busiest, Otres 2 – there are fewer tourists and quieter, and the village Otres.

Cape Town's 10 Sights

But note that Sihanoukville itself gives the impression of being undeveloped. There is absolutely nowhere to walk around except the beaches.

Islands of Cambodia: Ko Rong, Ko Ta Kiev, Kaoh Damlaung, Song Saa, Ko Thmey. You can get there by booking a day trip from Sihanoukville – $25-30, or you can stay there for a few days. In the first case, you can not only drive around the islands, but also to try snorkeling or diving.

It is worth remembering that during the rainy season in the country also begins the wave season. It falls in the summer months.

Tips – pros and cons of the holiday

Holidays in Cambodia can be both wonderful and terrible. Someone prefers a developed infrastructure and good service, which is already put on foot in Thailand, but still do not get in Cambodia. It is worth to go here for those who are interested in seeing something new, who are ready for spartan conditions and want a little privacy. Plus, Thailand or Vietnam are no longer interesting:)

+ Low cost for tours, food and accommodation + uncrowded beaches of Cambodia, clean sea and the opportunity to relax on the islands + Nice, helpful people + Warm climate

– Ubiquitous filth and stench in the big cities – Underdeveloped infrastructure – Bad roads – Very common prostitution, exploitation of child labor

The cost of holidays in Cambodia

You can also take an old-fashioned tour to Cambodia, but such a trip will cost about 150 thousand rubles per week flying from Moscow. Even considering that everything is included: flight, hotel and meals, the money is obviously worth it. It is much more reasonable to take a trip to Thailand (or Vietnam) – look at Travelata – and act from there.

Also remember that the best places in Cambodia are scattered throughout the country, you have to move around a lot if you want to see everything. And then it is easier to fly on your own.

Approximate budget for 7 days, based on our experience (for one):

  • Airfare: 36,000 rubles
  • Meals: 10,000 rubles
  • Hotels (hostels): 5,000 rubles
  • Excursions in Cambodia and entrance tickets: 8000 rubles

Total: ≈ RUB 60 000.

About the holiday in Cambodia reviews of tourists are not so numerous (most go on 1-2 day tours): prices are low, in an Asian way dirty, dusty, chaotic. Someone sees in Cambodia appalling poverty, clingy locals, cheeky children. And someone – a completely different way of life, in which everyone in his own way happy. What will be your impression?)
