Exotic island of Sri Lanka attracts many people. And it has a lot to love: the many kilometers of sandy beaches, idyllic coconut palms and a truly endless season. Air temperature, as well as water temperature during the year varies between two or three degrees, which can only dream of the Mediterranean resorts (they have a gap of ten degrees is the norm).

The specificity of Sri Lanka and its beach vacation is due to the weather conditions, and above all – the geographical location. The subequatorial monsoon climate, in which the island lies, is a pronounced division into the dry season and rainy season. While on one coast the elements rage (huge waves, regular downpours), on the other the sun shines brightly and it’s really hot.

The beaches of the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka rest from October to May, the beaches of the northeastern coast, of which there are not so many – from May to October. This point is described in more detail in the Weather in Sri Lanka .

Tranquil beaches for swimming

The very first surprise that tourists have when they first arrive on the island: why are there waves in the water all the time? It just can’t be any other way. Even so, the beaches of Sri Lanka without waves does not exist, as taken care of by the Indian Ocean that washes the island. One salvation is the small lagoons and coves with relatively calm backwaters, which are all along the coast.

For example, on the beach of Velighama, firstly, gentle approach to the water (50-100 m not very deep), and secondly, there is a bay, and the waves subside for 300 meters from the shore, so that here parents with children actively go.

Hikkaduwa Beach is protected from the power of the ocean by a kilometer-long lagoon with coral reefs and rocks. The same is true of Unawatuna Beach, where you can swim comfortably even for those who are afraid of waves. Nearby is Jungle Beach, where there are virtually no waves. The cozy bay of Dickwell Beach and the lagoon of Mirissa also makes for a pleasant swim.

To the east, there are beaches in Sri Lanka with a calm ocean, such as Uppuveli, Kalkuda.

In Sri Lanka, like nowhere else, it is important to stay safe in the water. The most important thing is not to get into the water if you are not sure of your abilities. Oceanic waves are powerful and merciless, so if you have even minor doubts, do not even close to the shore.

Beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka

One of the most picturesque beaches of the island recognized the beach of Bentota. The secluded beach of Tangalle is not inferior to it. On the shore of the bay stretches the already mentioned beach of Velighama with lush vegetation and fine sand.

Romantic scenery is a feature of Dickwell beach, where romantic couples invariably meet. An incredible sunset awaits at Induruwa beach. Kalutara beach also deserves praise for its wide strip of sand.

The dream of any resort – white beaches – in Sri Lanka is absent as a class: there is no snow-white beaches like in the Philippines or Phuket, the sand is mostly light yellow or ochre.

Almost all the beaches in Sri Lanka can be called beautiful, the only difference is that some beaches have not yet reached the mass tourists.

Beaches in Sri Lanka for recreation with children

To choose a beach for recreation with children is not an easy task, because it is worth taking into account many factors. First of all, it is not characteristic for Sri Lanka lack of strong waves. Also decisive are the purity of the coastal strip and a gentle entrance to the water.

Usually, tourists with children do not go in search and choose the popular Unawatuna beach. The water here is quite clean, as the beach is located in a small lagoon.

Also a distinctive feature of the beach is a gentle entrance into the water. The natural shade is created by a strip of palm trees. It is worth being careful not to spend time under the coconut palms, it can be dangerous.

One of the main beaches of the island has all the necessary infrastructure for recreation with children – showers, toilets, sun loungers and eating facilities. A big disadvantage is the crowdedness of Unawatuna Beach. In the high tourist season, noise and crowds can interfere with a full quality rest. On the other hand, among the many small vacationers child can find a company to play.

Unawatuna beach

Easy to rest with the kids can be called the beach of Bentota. By Lankan standards, the beach is fairly clean and well maintained, the sand is uniform without inclusions, the depth increases gradually. The beach is conditionally divided into southern and northern parts. For a holiday with children you should choose the northern beach due to the lack of strong waves.

Many families with children prefer a quiet and comfortable beach Dikvella. Rich entertainment infrastructure beach can not boast, but the coast is rarely a strong wind and waves. Dikvella is divided into three beach areas: the large and two smaller ones, following it. The calmest zone is right behind the big beach.

The best beaches for children are in bays sheltered from the wind and, consequently, from strong waves. Some of these beaches are Uppuveli and Nilaveli. The beaches of Trincomalee are quite calm coast with developed infrastructure and not the largest number of holidaymakers.

Fine uniform golden sand, comfortable and gentle entrance to the water, tourist entertainment infrastructure – all this is about the beach of Mirissa, which is the best suitable for young travelers.

For children’s holidays should choose the eastern part of the beach, as the sea in the lagoon is almost always quiet. A distinctive feature of the beach is that here live large turtles, with which to meet – the dream of every child.

For lovers of secluded holidays suit the sandy part of the beach Maravila. The shoreline is occasionally interrupted by stone placers, and you should choose those areas for swimming, which are located closer to the hotels. The beach is located away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you are lucky, you can meet turtles on the shoreline.

Top 12 best beaches in Sri Lanka

It is high time to tell you about my favorite beaches in Sri Lanka. I’ll tell you the secret)). My favorite beaches are many, in fact. I will tell you why I like each.

DSC_0810

1.Mirissa. Beach number one will always be Mirissa. First, personal reasons: because I met my husband here, the second family, gave birth to children and lived here most of the time that I’m in Sri Lanka. I am very lucky because I can also call Mirissa the best beach in Sri Lanka. The beach is very beautiful. There are 5 beaches and coves here. Each one is beautiful. There are places where you can swim with children. There are places for those who like to jump on the waves. There are two surf spots. There is a bay, which is already called turtle bay. There are turtles swimming there all the time. Yes, Mirissa is also a great place for snorkeling. There is white sand, there is black sand, there is a coral coarse, which you can look at endlessly. And what’s worth just the Secret Beach! Just a wow place! Mirissa is a pretty touristy place now. That means it has everything a tourist needs. Small stores, souvenir shops, a supermarket, pharmacies, ATMs, an alco-shop, a lot of hostels and hotels for every taste and purse. And there’s even a tourist police! ☝️ I like that Mirissa has not only restaurants for tourists, but also many cheap cafes for locals with Lankan food. There is a port in Mirissa. It is the only place where whale watching tours depart from. The port itself is a very bright and colorful place with lots of boats. I like to stop by here during photo shoots. You can buy fresh fish at the port in the morning. I also suggest visiting the Perot Rock and the coconut grove. Mirissa is still a village. On one side of Mirissa (10 min by transport) is the town of Velighama. On the other side (20 min by transport) is the large town of Matara. The towns have everything you might need. For example, hospitals.

2.Polhena and Madiha. Some people call these places with an “x”: Polhena and Madiha. The French way. These are the beaches 6-7 km from Mirissa. There are lots of small, picturesque beaches along 1.3 kilometers. Most of the beaches are bathing. Because this area is fenced in by the reefs, where the waves break and do not reach the shore. I wrote about all the beaches of Polkhena and Madiha in a separate post. Ask me, I’ll post it. The central beach of Polkhena is the easternmost beach of the chain. I appreciate it for the total absence of waves all year round, the availability of sandy, canopy entrance to the water, the availability of shade, the presence of police and lifeguards on the beach. I think it is the safest beach in Sri Lanka. Bottom line, this is the perfect place to swim with kids and for those who don’t know how to swim and are unsure of the water. Since locals do not swim and are very wary of the ocean, they choose places without waves to swim. Therefore, Polhena has one undeniable disadvantage: the locals. But there are a lot of them only on weekends. On weekdays and especially in the mornings the beach is sparsely populated. And on the day off, it’s worth just walking west to other beaches, where there are no locals anymore. Polhena is not a touristy, non-European place at all. A local place where you can taste the local food. If you want a European hangout, just walk to Madiha and The Doctor’s house restaurant and you’ll hit one of the most popular hangout spots in the south. The Doctor’s house often hosts parties full of Europeans and Australians, where people come from all over the south, even from touristy Unawatuna. Polhena is near the town of Matara. So everything you need can be bought in town. There is a big Arpico supermarket within walking distance. I also like this area for the quiet, picturesque streets, away from the main noisy road. The path over the ocean is so cute. You can go for morning runs or bike over the ocean.

3. Amanvella. This is the beach next to Tangalle. Paradise bounty beach like the picture. A perfect place for a photo shoot. This is the place when – breathtaking beauty. The only beach where you get the impression that we are on a desert island. Because all the hotel buildings are not visible because of the many palm trees. We go to this beach as part of the tour for a day on the south coast of the island.

4. Diquella. I love one cove that is west of the main Dikvella beach. This cove ends with the Dikwella Resort &Spa hotel. A place where you can swim comfortably. The beach is quiet and very beautiful. There are tubs in the rocks, where the little ones enjoy splashing. On the coast there is a Russian cafe. Cook a lot and delicious. The price tag is small for such delicious, large portions. We also stop by this beach for lunch as part of the tour.

5. Talalla. A very beautiful beach, moderately touristy. In the season, the waves are small and allow swimming. Suitable for a quiet family vacation with children from 5 years. 6.Hiriketia. A beautiful small and very touristy beach. A hangout place for European surfers. There are different cool cafes. The beach is also swimmable in some places and at certain times of the day.

7. Unawatuna. One of the most populous beaches in Sri Lanka. You can swim here. Many cafes and the most pleasant tourist atmosphere of all the beaches. Lots of stores, benches, cafes. I like to stop here for breakfast. Or come here to hang out. There are a lot of Russians here who do restaurants and hotels. Although the internet says it’s the most cable place in Sri, but it’s not. Why – I have already written. And today just about the pros. Also on the hill near the temple cool to meet the sunset.

8.Dalavella. Speaking of swimming, near Unawatuna there is a beach called Dalawella. It’s a beautiful place with instagram rock and bungees. There are natural pools on the beach where an adult is waist high. It’s a perfect place to swim with small children. There are tourist cafes on the coast.

9.Talaramba Beach. This is a completely non-touristy, but beautiful and swimable small beach. Even the locals do not know about this beach. However, both in season and out of season it is quite suitable for recreation and swimming. It is located next to tourist Mirissa, to the east. You can find it on the map under the name Britch Mystery Beach. I recently had a whole post dedicated to this beach.

10.Passicuda. It is a beach on the east of the island. It’s amazing, very beautiful. When you are on this beach, it seems that you are not in Sri Lanka, but in the Maldives. No waves at all, as in the lake.

11.Arugam Bay. This is the most touristy place in the east of the island. Here come to surf. Along the length of the beach changes its views. But all are very beautiful. Unfortunately, the beach is not swimmable at all. Suitable only for surfing. It is nice to come here for the tourist atmosphere. There are few Russians here for some reason, mostly Europeans.

12. Tangalle Beaches. Here I will unite all beaches in Tangalle. There are a lot of them. They are different. There are with and without waves and tourist and completely deserted. But they all have one thing in common: the stunning beauty. The central city beach Tangalle (Parewella natural swimming area). It is very similar to the central beach of Polhan. Also without waves, easy entrance to the water, sand, there are policemen and lifeguards. The beach is near the town of Tangalle. Convenient, the town has everything you need. The only downside is no shade. If you bring an umbrella or tent with you, solve this problem. Other beaches in Tangalle worthy of attention are Unakuruwa (I haven’t been there yet, but it is very praised), Gayamboka and the beach near the five-star hotel Anantara (beautiful, but there are moderate waves), Marakkalagoda (small, beautiful, bathing beach), Medaketiya (an area east of Tangalle, where there is a nice tourist area and many different cafes. The beach in this area has big waves and you can’t swim).
