The date of foundation of Vyborg is considered 1293, when Swedes built a fortified castle on the place of destroyed Karelian burg. Its surroundings passed to the Russian Empire as a result of the Great Northern War, according to the Treaty of Nishtadt. 1918 was a turning point – Finland declared independence, and Vyborg became the second largest village of the republic. As a result of the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940 it was annexed to the Soviet Union. What to visit in Vyborg? The most touristy place is the medieval castle, founded by the Swedes. It is small – only 122 by 170 meters. It consists of a seven-story tower of St. Olaf and a five-story building, which had living rooms, rooms for the ball, halls for the knights. Defensive guns were set up on the top floor of the castle, and the basement was used to store ammunition.

This famous place is the only remaining historical monument of medieval military architecture in Russia. There is a museum here, where exhibitions and expositions are constantly held. During the celebrations of anniversaries knightly duels are staged here, crafts and archery are taught.

Monument to Thorgils Knutsson

On October 4, 1904 a monument to the first owner of the castle, Thorgils Knutsson, was erected on the square of the old town hall. In 1948 the sculpture was removed, and was returned only to the 700th anniversary of the founding of the city.

It is located on the embankment of the 40th anniversary of Komsomol.
