Tulum’s food scene is growing to cater to an increasingly demanding international audience that regularly descends on this popular Caribbean beach destination, though that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of hidden local favorites. Here’s your basic guide to food in Tulum, from high-end restaurants to quirky, hot spots on the beach.

Que Fresco!

The flagship restaurant of Tulum’s famed tourist hotel Zamas, Que Fresco! is the perfect place to grab a coastal lunch or dinner at this idyllic vacation spot (though some swear they’re up early for breakfast). Not only will you be treated to high-quality, fresh food – Mayan flavors and local, seasonally raw produce dominate the dishes at Que Fresco! – you’ll also enjoy beautiful views of Tulum’s coastline.

El Camello Jr.

Originally founded by a local fishing collective, El Camello Jr. is now one of the best and perhaps most authentic places to eat in town. Despite this, it is now well known in both local and international circles, and this perennially popular spot is known for its generous and super fresh ceviche and seafood dishes. Order fish tacos to relieve yourself and bring at least basic Spanish, since English is not spoken.

La Chiapaneca

Restaurant, Mexican, street food, $$$

If you want an authentic place to grab a quick meal on the go, but seafood just doesn’t float your boat, then you can’t go wrong with La Chiapaneca. This is an important place if you want to enjoy the authentic (and incredibly cheap) taco pastor in Tulum, which is often considered the best in town. Along with their trademark mint, you can also get a handful of other local dishes.

Chamicos

Welcomed as the newest beachfront retreat in Tulum – admirably off the Chamicos chain – that has no fixed address, phone number or website. Nevertheless, tracking down this no-frills place is certainly worth the effort, as you’ll be rewarded with freshly caught fish and plenty of platters of seafood caught the same day. The hours are complicated and you have to pay cash, but it makes for a memorable experience.

Posada Margherita

Step away from the more local Mexican fare and into the upscale, hotel quality dining room now with the fabulous beachfront Italian restaurant Posada Margherita. You may wonder why we recommend Italian food in Mexico, but after tasting the freshly made pastas and pizzas here you won’t be surprised again. Like most places in Tulum, the seafood additions are all freshly caught and flavorful, and the shabby-chic atmosphere makes it a truly romantic place. Take Cash.
