This place near the Don River has always been strategic, for example, even Peter I wanted to build a fortress here to protect the Russian land from the raids of the Crimean Tatars and Turkish janissaries. Fertile and uncultivated lands stretched around, so new settlers moved here, and at the beginning of XIX century fortress received the status of the district city of Rostov-on-Don.

Tanais is an ancient city, dating back to the 3rd century B.C., located at the mouth of the Don River. In the first centuries AD it was part of the Bosporan Kingdom. Tanais is near the farm Nedvigovka, about 40 km west of Rostov-on-Don. As an archaeological site it was discovered in 1823 by a corresponding member of the Paris Academy, Colonel IA Stempkovsky. From 1870 until the post-revolutionary time, when all ancient monuments were declared the national property protected by the Soviet law, for almost 50 years the locals and guests of the city were stacking the site in parts for their own needs. It stopped when in 1961 an archaeological museum-reserve with the area of about 3,000 hectares was opened there, which was one of the first in Russia.
Nowadays Tanais reserve unites an ensemble of cultural and historical monuments of different peoples and times, from the Paleolithic Age to monuments of cult and residential architecture of the 19th century. Each year this northern point of the ancient Greek civilization is visited by many tourists, who want to see the remains of the ancient world with their own eyes.

Paramonov warehouses built by engineers Yakunin and Shulman in 19th century are located on the bank of Don river, between Sokolov avenue and Universitetsky lane.
The complex of buildings was built of brick, influenced by Romanesque and Classicist architecture. The authors of the warehouses in the construction of buildings used the springs, which come from the slope of the Don shore. They collected water in the troughs and passed these troughs through the warehouses, and as a result, the troughs kept the warehouses at a lower temperature, which was favorable for storing grain. On the facades of the warehouses there are still round holes in the interfloor space, which were used for transferring the grain through tarpaulin sleeves from the second floors to the embankment level, where the grain was reloaded onto barges and sent abroad.
Now the hulls look more like ruins, adorned by the springs that beat. Green grass grows on the ruins of the warehouses almost all year round.
