The best hotels in Siena – tips for choosing
The best hotels in Siena, the city of students and one of the popular tourist locations in the region of Tuscany (Toscana), are often arranged in ancient buildings. The interior is all very pompous, with accommodation prices ranging from 90 to 380 euros per night if we consider only hotels with good reviews.
The accommodation options presented are not many services, the main thing – the atmosphere of medieval Siena, which is perfectly preserved narrow “curly” streets and buildings with centuries of history. The owners manage not to lose the spirit of antiquity, while providing guests with the necessary amenities: air conditioning, bath or shower, free Wi-Fi. The latter, however, in the middle of the thick masonry does not work too fast, but it is to the good – you can at least for a while escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
Siena itself is famous for its Chianti, a dry red wine made in the region, and the Palio, a summer festival with horse races and colorful parades through the old town.
B&B Il Corso
The B&B Il Corso is appreciated by travelers for its excellent location: just 50 meters from Siena’s main square Piazza del Campo.
The 16th century building with wooden beams on the first floor is very well preserved and offers tourists all the modern comforts: the bright rooms, each with its own name, has its own bathroom. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the city.
A traditional Italian breakfast of fruit, sheep cheese and fresh pastries is included in the room rate. You can brew your own coffee in the coffee machine or have a cup of tea throughout the day. There is also an outdoor terrace.
Chianti & Pizza di Mister Pizza, where you can enjoy a pizza and a glass of Chianti, is a 3-minute walk away. La Locanda dei Tintori, an Italian restaurant, is the same distance away.
Casatorre dei Leoni Dimora Storica
Casatorre dei Leoni Dimora Storica Bed & Breakfast is not very convenient to get to by car as the parking lot is a bit far, but if you contact the hotel in advance, they will pick you up and drive you to the hotel in their own transport.
The ancient building is 150 meters from the Municipal Museum (Palazzo Pubblico) and half a kilometer from the majestic Duomo di Siena.
High ceilings with exposed beams and intact historic walls with frescoes in the spacious rooms, accommodating from 2 to 4 guests, evoke the atmosphere of medieval Siena. And the amenities are quite modern: air conditioning, bathroom with shower. The two-floor apartments sleep 3 to 6 people and feature a kitchen with cooking utensils and a fridge.
In the morning a standard Italian breakfast is served with cheese, fruit, pastries, juices and excellent cappuccino.
I recommend a visit to La Taverna di San Giuseppe, an atmospheric Michelin-starred spot, 5 minutes on foot.
From the Palazzetto Rosso you can walk to Siena Cathedral and the Basilica of San Domenico (Basilica Cateriniana Di S. Domenico) in about half a kilometer and the semi-circular Palazzo Chigi Saracini.
In this XXIII century building, brick walls and wooden beams on the ceiling are combined with colorful chairs and fixtures in a modern style. It is a hotel with character, where sometimes practicality is sacrificed to the designer’s imagination: just look at the transparent washroom in the middle of the living room! In expensive rooms you can admire the views right out of the bathtub through the open window, and in less expensive rooms there is a shower.
For dinner I suggest to go to a restaurant of southern Italian cuisine Mugolone, where you can try great risotto, pasta, black truffles and other dishes.
The Hotel Athena, four stars, is suitable for all motorists and long walks.
The hotel is located in perfect harmony with the natural gradients on the mountain behind the old fortress wall of Siena. The main tourist attractions are within walking distance: the Torre del Mangia, one of the highest towers in Italy, is only 7 minutes away, while Siena Cathedral is 6 minutes from the hotel.
The rooms for one to four people are tastefully decorated; even the colors of the paintings match the colors of the furniture and fabrics.
On the top floor there is a terrace with tables, where it is pleasant to spend an evening with a glass of Chianti admiring the view of the Old Town, green hills with vineyards and mountains in the distance.
The excellent breakfasts, included in the price, consist of muffins, croissants, scrambled eggs, a variety of fruits, cheeses, and sausages. Dinner is served in the hotel restaurant, which offers Tuscan cuisine.
The staff offers guided tours of the Chianti and Brunello regions, famous for their wines.
Domus Nannini SPA.
The classic, elegant apartments of Domus Nannini SPA – Palazzo Nannini are in the heart of Siena’s historic center.
The central Piazza del Campo is at a walking distance of 4 minutes and the oldest bank in the world Monte dei Paschi di Siena in Piazza Salimbeni is right in front.
Sumptuous furnishings, crystal chandeliers, frescos on walls and ceilings, parquet floors, and a great view of the city make this a very attractive place for tourists. Marble-tiled baths, jacuzzis and private spas including a sauna and Turkish bath provide relaxation and rest after walking around the city.
The apartments have a spacious kitchen with everything you might need to prepare a meal. Reservations include tea, milk and juices, cakes and cookies, with which you can have breakfast so you don’t have to waste time cooking.
I recommend lunch or dinner at Osteria Il Grattacielo, a 2-minute walk from the apartment. Here you can enjoy simple, homemade but very tasty Italian food.
Hotel Certosa Di Maggiano
The four star Hotel Certosa Di Maggiano is a former 14th century monastery on the outskirts of Siena, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees.
The atmosphere of the place is created by the scents of the Tuscan gardens, the taste of spring water and the quiet evenings in the old library, where the fringe of the lampshade hanging over the table creates a soft lighting.
The elegant rooms for 2-4 people have everything you need for a good rest: beautiful antique furniture, marble bathrooms, soft big beds.
A continental breakfast consisting of a variety of fruits, pastries, cereals, milk and juices is served on the covered colonnade or in the old-fashioned kitchen.
It has its own church, but guests do not have to spend their time like their monastic predecessors: hotel guests can do yoga, pilates, gymnastics with a personal trainer. For the more active, there is a large outdoor pool and tennis court.
Grand Hotel Continental Siena
The five-star Grand Hotel Continental Siena – Starhotels Collezione is the kind of hotel that forms the atmosphere of the trip.
It is located in the pedestrian area of the Old Town in a house that is more than three hundred years old. It’s a four-minute walk to the Torre del Mangia tower.
Frescoes on the walls, paintings on the ceiling, columns, stucco, arches and bas-reliefs – as if you are not in a hotel but in a museum. Armchairs and tables with bent legs, baldachins over beds, polished chests of drawers, terracotta tiles on the floor, the whole design of the rooms with good sound insulation emphasizes the status.
The rooms are very bright with huge windows overlooking the city, the de luxe rooms on the upper floor have a roof terrace. Elite Etro cosmetics are offered in the bathrooms.
During the day you can drink wine from the cellar and have dinner at the hotel’s restaurant of Tuscan cuisine, Sapordivino.
One and a half kilometers from the center of Siena the Villa Bonelli apartments open onto a little garden with wicker furniture and pergolas that are perfect for sitting out in the heat of the summer.
The air is filled with the scent of roses and petunias, which grow in numerous vases in the grounds.
In the spacious bright apartment has a living corner and kitchen with necessary equipment, including dishwasher and washing machine. The owners did not skimp on the beautiful renovation and organization of space. At check-in, they treat you to prosecco, delicious cookies and chocolate.
You can walk to the Old Town in 15 minutes.
The Hotel Palazzo Ravizza was built in 1922 as a guesthouse and has been a short stay for aristocrats since then.
It is located in the center of the city, 4 minutes walk from the Palazzo Venturi Gallerani and 7 minutes from the Municipal Museum.
Large windows with shutters overlook ancient buildings and green hills. The beds are wide and have a soft headboard for a good night’s sleep. The deluxe rooms are decorated with columns and paintings on the ceilings, and some have balconies. A grand piano stands in the living room on the first floor.
The grounds include a small garden with a fountain, where you can read, socialize, or just relax with a glass of wine while watching the sun set in the hills around Siena.
A continental breakfast, included in the room rate, is served outside in the summer.
