Ho Chi Minh City Airport is the largest and most important airport in Vietnam, located 6 kilometers north of downtown Ho Chi Minh City.

The airport was built in the 1930s by the French colonial government. It was originally a small airport with unpaved landing strips. In 1956, the U.S. bought it and built terminals and a new runway about two kilometers long, making it the South Vietnamese International Airport.

Ho Chi Minh City Airport accounts for more than half of the country’s passenger air traffic. It is located exactly within the city, not next to the city. Just stepping out of the arrival terminal you will find yourself on the city streets.

The airport holds 15-17 million passengers a year. Planes depart from two runways of more than 3 kilometers each.

Ho Chi Minh Trail

Ho Chi Minh Trail (photo)

The Ho Chi Minh Trail was a complex system of forest and mountain trails that connected North Vietnam, South Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos during the Vietnam War. Initially a small trail, it gradually grew into an entire network of more than 20,000 kilometers.

The function of the trail as a military artery began in 1959, with the beginning of the revolutionary struggle for the reunification of the South with the North. It took more than a month to get from Hanoi to the south. But by 1974, the trail had become an improved infrastructure with underground hospitals, fuel tanks, weapons and uniforms depots, and many sections were paved or paved over. A Viet Cong military force, which was constantly being replenished along the Trail, captured Saigon in 1976, ending years of bloody war.

Modern guidebooks most often refer to the Ho Chi Minh Trail as Route 1 Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, the only paved road in Vietnam, a journey that takes about two weeks. You can start either in Ho Chi Minh City or in Hanoi, with stops in Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat and the Central Plateau (if driving from north to south).

In the heart of the business district, a 15-minute walk from the city center, rises the 68-story, 262-meter-tall Bitexco skyscraper.
