27 Sights of Veliky Novgorod worth visiting
The museum was founded in 1964. The total area of this cultural institution is 33.4 hectares. The exposition is based on the territory, where the Semevsky’s manor – A. A. Orlova-Chesmenskaya – used to be located, which approximately dates back to the first half of the XIX century. This place is known among Novgorod citizens as “Orlovskaya manor”.
Till nowadays two buildings have survived, which are attributed to the ancient manor. One is a two-storeyed house, still built in the XIX century, as well as a small one-storeyed outbuilding. Tourists will also be pleased with the park zone, some elements of which have preserved the atmosphere of the old times.
The museum “Vitoslavlitsy” is a unique architectural and ethnographic complex, the main purpose of which is to educate local residents and visitors about the traditions and folk culture of Veliky Novgorod. For this purpose the museum complex was divided into four functional zones, each of which is represented by an old Russian hut where the merchants lived.
In these monuments of folk architecture there are additional exhibitions and expositions, which allow guests of the museum to feel the atmosphere of a merchant’s life. This effect of sympathy arose due to the fact that the museum staff has worked hard to create a realistic atmosphere, full of dynamics.
The Dobrovolsky House, which was opened on the territory of the estate only in 2014, deserves a special mention. As part of this complex, two expositions are arranged, which introduce travelers to the felting trade. But the main highlight of this exhibit hall is that numerous workshops are organized here, so all visitors can try their hand at felting. During the program all guests will be invited to make various items of sheep’s wool, which can then be taken for a lasting memory.
No less interest from the guests of the museum is a composition, presented by the whole ensemble of Orthodox churches. These churches symbolize the pogost, which in ancient times was considered to be the central place of the entire rural district. Here are also erected additional religious buildings – a stable and an old blacksmith’s shop.
“Vitoslavlitsy” amazes with its beauty and charm. This museum of wooden architecture is a true decoration of the Novgorod land, so every tourist who comes to Veliky Novgorod should visit the complex.
On the steep bank of the river Kashira in Malovisherskiy district above the precipice rose a chapel, which attracted the attention of the expedition of the Novgorod State United Museum-Reserve in 1971. The building, like the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, was dismantled and transported to the ethnographic museum
We could not find any information about it in the documents. Researchers learned from local residents that earlier it was moved from some other settlement. During the war, the Red Army opened a club in it. Two big windows were cut through, the bell tower and the cross were dismantled. Later it became a storage place for broken farming equipment. Almost nothing is left of the former decorations. Researchers saw neither altar, nor throne. The iconostasis is virtually intact. Icons were also not found.
Kashirskaya chapel was decided to be placed in the center of Vitoslavlitsy. Architects-restorers saved the monument and returned it to look as close to the original as possible.
Since 2013, to the delight of all the little guests and their parents in the museum opened an interactive exhibition.
“The farmyard” is an area next to the barn from Iversky Monastery, where you can feed and ride the animals popular in peasant farming.
The central part of the exhibition is a stable from Borovichi district with two horses. Next to it there is a goat farm. Visitors can go horseback riding, take pictures and participate in master classes. Children can learn how to shoe horses, milk goats and try to take care of animals under the supervision of their parents and museum workers.
Photo and description
In the XII century on this place – on the road between Novgorod and Yuriev monastery – was the village Vitoslavlitsy. This place was chosen in the 1960s for the creation of the open-air museum. The buildings that were in a deplorable condition were brought here from the territory of the whole region. The restoration workshop literally saved these religious monuments from destruction.
Altogether on the territory of 30 hectares there are 22 monuments. There are different types of survived wooden churches: steepled “octagon on the square” church of the Assumption from Kurytsk (1595), cross on the podklet with three altars – of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin from Peredki (1531), tiered church of Nicola from Vysokyi Ostrov (1767) and cell church from the village Tukhol (1688).
Today it is one of the favorite places for walks and entertainments of citizens and guests of Novgorod. Behind the fence among the trees you can see the tents and domes of churches and bell towers. On the country street in the strict order there are huts in which under one roof were united both habitation and economic premises.
You will be greeted on the threshold of the hut by a hostess in a typical Novgorod village dress of the last century, smiling and talkative. She will show you the yard and the vegetable garden, the hayloft and the cattle stalls and will explain the functions of all the objects. In the hut where you can see furniture, utensils, expressive “trifles”, gathered during expeditions, such as wrought iron lighters with a match, painted cupboards, spinning wheels and village “rubies”, you can sit and study the simple structure of everyday life, try to guess how the huge family managed to fit in here, look at the floorboards, where children used to sleep, and finally, try on sandals and take a picture with the hospitable hostess. In the gallery near the house, masters will offer you souvenirs made of birch bark and wood, and show you how to work with these materials.
Twice a year, on Christmas and Trinity, holidays are held in Vitoslavlitsy. In winter, people go sledging and sleigh rides, songs are sung, ritual actions are performed. In summer, folklore groups from all over the region come together. Round dances and songs replace one another on each lawn. On the playgrounds, children and adults master the “stilts”, “giant steps”, play “ryuhi” and “babka”, tug of war. Nearby is a fair. All traditional handicrafts – birch bark weaving, wood carving and painting, hand weaving, clay whistle toys – are represented here and find their buyers. Often the holiday ends with a concert of bell music.

Museum exhibits of Vitoslavlitsy
Today, the museum has 30 structures, and the planned increase in their number reaches the figure of 70. Its territory is divided into four sectors: you can now visit peasant and merchant houses, churches, outbuildings and even a windmill. It is noteworthy that not only the interiors, but also elements of peasant and merchant life have been restored in the houses. A guide’s detailed account of everyday life of a wealthy peasant or a petty merchant is supported by demonstrations of household items, kitchen utensils and furniture. Each of the expositions bears the name of a former owner. For example, Shkiparev’s house, where you can learn about the rules of baptism of newborns, or Tsareva’s hut, where visitors learn about how the Christian holidays in Russia were celebrated: Easter, Shrovetide and Christmas holidays. According to a local legend, a woman who rocks a cradle there will soon give birth to a child. Wooden architecture is also represented by ancient chapels and churches. Among them are Kashirskaya chapel of the XVIII century and the tiered Church of St. Nicholas from the village Vysoky Ostrov, Kletskaya Church of the Trinity, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin of the XVI century. In general, the whole territory of the museum resembles a Russian folk tale, conveys the atmosphere of the old Russian belief in the victory of good over evil. The restorers had to work hard to recreate the picture that we see today.Besides, the museum complex is constantly becoming a venue for various events and festivals. There are a variety of festivals, handicrafts exhibitions, folklore events, such as the festival of folk songs. The museum is also responsible for the celebration of the main spring event – the farewell to winter and Pancake Week. Newlyweds can order here, in addition to the main event, the ancient ceremonial rite of marriage.
The beautiful lakeside, where the museum is located, emphasizes how perfectly and harmonically wooden architecture fits into the surrounding nature.
The museum got its sonorous Slavic name in memory of the small village of Vitoslavlitsy, mentioned in the 1134 letter of Prince Izyaslav Mstislavich, who “requested” land from Novgorod to establish Panteleimon’s monastery. The remains of the monastery’s stone buildings – the Church of St. Panteleimon of 1207 and the refectory of the XVI century, studied by archaeologists, are supposed to be prepared for museum display. Now it is hard to imagine the local area without the expressive silhouettes of churches, ancient huts, “winged” mill and other buildings, unusual for modern people. The best surviving examples of folk wooden architecture are collected here. For today from various places of Novgorod region 26 constructions were brought to the museum and installed, a few more are under restoration and waiting for their turn. The area of the museum is 33.4 hectares, mostly park, with a variety of landscapes. The exposition of the museum continues to be formed. According to the general project provides to collect about 70 buildings, including so-called small forms: scales, swings, wells, and so on. Four architectural and ethnographic sectors are created: Pritraktovo-Mstinsky, North-East, South-West, Priozerny, and separately – complexes: Monastyrsky (or Pogost) and Mill. Such division is conditioned by historical and economic peculiarities of development of the area itself and gives an opportunity to exhibit architectural monuments of the past in natural conditions. Well-known architects of our country contributed to the creation of museum “Vitoslavlitsy”: A.V. Opolovnikov, G.V. Borisevich, V.A. Popov, L.M. Shulyak and many others. The main merit in its formation belongs to the remarkable Novgorod architect restorer Leonid Egorovich Krasnorechiev, the honored worker of culture of the RSFSR, the Honorary Citizen of Veliky Novgorod, twice the laureate of the State Prize. He is the author of the projects of restoration of the majority of the monuments themselves, as well as of the general plan of the museum, with additions and corrections by the ethnographer M.I. Vasiliev and the architect V.A. Popov. Thanks to the most difficult scientific restoration, the monuments are freed from the later alterations that distort their original appearance. This makes it possible to see the masterpieces of folk architecture in their original form. The original art of the masters of the past gets a second life here. The exposition of the museum is designed as a village with a variety (one-sided, two-sided, free) buildings, reflecting the features of old Novgorod villages – from the guidebook “Vitoslavlitsy”. Authors L.A. Filippova, T.A. Klimova, 2013.
