    Grodno in brief

Grodno is called the royal city. This is partly true, because Grodno has a palace, which used to be the residence of Polish kings and Lithuanian princes, even though the city has never been the capital of the kingdom.

Grodno, today one of the regional centers, is located at the western border of Belarus. It is about 20 km from the border with Lithuania and Poland. You can get here from Minsk by public transport: train or bus (shuttle bus). But the most convenient way is by car. The trip by the new four-lane road length of 270 km will take you maximum 3 hours.

    bus from Grodno

The marshrutka from Minsk to Grodno is one of the fastest modes of public transport. They start from the central bus station. And the cost of tickets – from 20 Belorussian rubles (8 $) one way.

    What to see in Grodno

As I said above, most of the attractions of Grodno are located in the city center. So let’s talk about the main ones. So, let’s go.

    Grodno Castle Complex

The castle fortifications in Grodno are almost a thousand years old, or maybe even more. The first information about the castle at the site of modern Grodno dates back to the beginning of the 11th century. Even the legendary Prince Vitovt participated in the expansion and strengthening of the castle. In fact, Polish King Stefan Batory made the castle in Grodno his summer residence and built a new Renaissance palace nearby.

The Old and the New Castles rise above the Neman and the Gorodnichanka rivers.

Nowadays there are exhibitions in both castles, you can climb the observation decks and take a walk along the quay. In addition, in the territory of the old castle there are ruins of the so-called Lower Church, an architectural monument of the 10th century.

      Churches and churches

There are a great many iconic church buildings and sights in Grodno. But I will tell you about the main ones. Without them Grodno would not exist.

Far Church – the Church of St. Francis Xavier

Excursion through Grodno temples should begin with the second visiting card of the city – the Far Church, also known as St. Francis Xavier Church. It was opened in 1705, and its consecration was attended by Polish King August and even Russian Emperor Peter I. In terms of richness of interior decoration this church can surely compete with the major European temples.

      • Opening hours: According to the schedule of services, because the church is open (usually from 7 am to 9 pm).
      • How much time to schedule: 20 minutes to go around the outside, and half an hour to go inside, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.
      • My personal rating: 5/5, also recommend to visit.
      Boris and Gleb (Kolozhskaya) Church

This church is one of the oldest on the territory of Belarus and is a monument of temple architecture of ancient Russia. There are only three similar structures left in Belarus that were erected in the 11th century: in Grodno, in Turov (only the foundation covered by a pavilion remains) and the St. Sophia Cathedral in Polotsk (but rebuilt and having changed its original appearance).

      • My personal rating: 5/5, one of the must-visit “points” in Grodno.
      The Great Choral Synagogue.

Unique in its architecture and size. One of the largest synagogues in Europe. It was built in the 16th century on the site of a wooden structure. The synagogue has not had an easy history. Since the 90s of the 20th century the building was returned to the Jewish community of Grodno, and now restoration works are being carried out there. But inside there is a small museum that tells about the history of the Jews of Grodno.

      Holy Virgin Protection Cathedral

Remarkable for its exterior – Russian style architecture. It was built relatively recently: in the early 20th century. It became a cathedral instead of St. Sophia Cathedral, which unfortunately suffered from numerous fires and could not be saved or restored.

      St. John’s Lutheran Church

The oldest Protestant church in Belarus. And it appeared when in the second half of the 18th century Lutherans came to Grodno from Germany to work in the factories. Today the church is the only functioning Lutheran church in Belarus. It is also known for the organ music concerts that are popular among the citizens of Grodno.

What to see in Grodno: museums

Museums are usually associated with endless dusty cabinets with the same kind of exhibits. But in Grodno, besides the classic museums, which can be found in absolutely any city, there are also some fascinating museums that may really interest you.

To the “classic” museums I will refer:

      • Historical museums in the castles of Old and New. About them we wrote above.

what to see in Grodno museums

Among the classic museums that tell about the history of Grodno, you may be interested in the collection of Janusz Parulis, who collected items related to Grodno and Grodno citizens for many years.

But I recommend paying attention to the more interesting museums in Grodno.

      Pharmacy Museum

This is both the oldest pharmacy in the country (active) and at the same time a museum. It was founded and opened by the Jesuit order in the early 18th century. Among the museum exhibits there are medical instruments, utensils, ancient medicines, a reconstructed herbal laboratory, various ways of preparing medicines. The anatomical exposition was opened at the Grodno Medical University in 1959. There are more than 80 exhibits with pathologies and genetic mutations. The exhibits are creepy, but there is only one such museum with free access for visitors in Belarus.

      Museum of Honey

This rather interesting museum is located in the center of scientific beekeeping at Grodno State Agrarian University. There you can see different kinds of beehives and equipment used by beekeepers. There is also a hall for tastings, its own apiary and a special inhalation room for apitherapy (treatment with bee venom).

You can read about Minsk zoo in the big rating of the best sights in Minsk.

      Zhiliber Park

Who was Gillibert, and why is a park in Grodno named after him? Gillibert was a scientist and physician in the 18th century. He lived in Grodno and founded the first medical academy in Belarus and the apothecary and botanical garden attached to it. Today’s park is located just in this place, though it is already different from its original form. It is a quiet and cozy park with a lot of art objects, a cozy embankment of the Gorodnichanka river, cafes, and attractions for kids. By the way, the famous Grodno puppet theater is located there as well.

      • Coordinates: 53.68511, 23.83708
