Cape Verde: the best places for unforgettable vacations

Cape Verde is an African country, which has recently become a popular destination for exotic tourism. Endless white sand beaches and unusual lunar landscapes create all conditions for an unforgettable vacation.

Cape Verde landscape

Most tourists go to the islands of Sal and Boa Vishta. But do not limit yourself to these destinations. Below are the main attractions of Cape Verde and the most interesting entertainment, which is worth paying attention to while vacationing in this country.

Beaches of Sal and Boa Vista

The Beaches of Voa Vista

Many tourists stay on these islands of Cape Verde because of the favorable climate prevailing in these places. There is almost no rain, the weather is warm all year round, and the sandy beaches can compete with the most popular resorts in the Caribbean Sea.

The Beaches of Voa Vista

On the island of Sal, the coastal town of Santa Maria with a long sandy beach more than 1.5 km long is worth a visit. On the island of Boa Vista, some of the most popular destinations include the picturesque Estoril Bay, south of Sal Ray, and the longer Praia Carlota beach, leading to the luxury resort of Rio Carambo.

Kitesurfing and windsurfing

Kitesurfing

Cabo Verde is dominated by northeasterly trade winds, especially strong during the winter months. These winds create ideal conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing in winter. The largest centers for these water sports are located on the island of Sal.

Kitesurfing

There is even a separate bay for kite surfers, which usually hosts international competitions in this water sport. There are also excellent kite-sitesitesitesitesites to rent the necessary equipment on the beaches of Boa Vista.

Trips on quad bikes

Quadcopter

The only most convenient option for traveling in Sal and Boa Vishta, where there are only a few roads and mostly desert terrain with rocky plains and sand dunes, is to rent an ATV. On the island of Sal, you can visit the ruins of the fortress of Algodoeiro (Algodoeiro) and drive past the salt deposits of Pedre de Lumé Salina. The best ATV excursions on Boa Vista are crossing the sand dunes of Chaves Beach and the rocky coast up to the shipwreck site of Cabo Santa Maria and traveling along the dried riverbed to the oasis of Fonte Vicente.

Whale and turtle watching

Whale watching

The waters around Cabo Verde are a migration site for humpback whales. The observation season is between March and May. During this time you can observe many humpback whales and listen to their “songs” – the specific sounds these giants make to attract females.

Boa vista Turtle

Also the islands of Cape Verde are known as the habitat of the beautiful turtles – loggerheads (highly recommended link). It is home to the world’s third largest population of these turtles. There are organizations to protect these reptiles on Sal and Boa Vista. You can visit such centers to learn more interesting information about the population of these turtles and learn about places where you can admire them.

The big attractions of a small Luxembourg

In Salé, you can go on guided tours that allow you to admire the turtles during the breeding season. But on Boa Vishta, when booking an excursion, make sure that the company offering them cooperates with the Turtle Foundation, which patrols the local beaches, and has the appropriate permission to organize such eco-tours.

The main attractions of Sal Island

The salt crater Pedra de Lumet

Pedra Lume Salt Crater

On Sal Island, it is possible to swim in the crater of an extinct volcano. Such a unique experience can only be compared to diving in the waters of the Dead Sea. The high salt content of the crater lake keeps everyone who takes a dip in it afloat. In addition, such mineral baths promote health.

Burakon’s Blue Eye.

Blue Eye of Capo Verde

This natural pool in a cave on Sal Island is known to all as the “Blue Eye” and, having been there, one can understand how the name came about. When the sea is calm, you can go down and take a dip in the clear blue waters. In stormy weather the descent might not be safe, but you can admire the spectacular sight of the majestic waves crashing with a roar over the rocks that are the walls of this natural pool.

Viveiro Botanical Garden with Animals

vivero botanico

This little-known oasis provides an impressive contrast to the lunar landscapes of Sal Island. The gardens are home to almost every plant found in Cape Verde. For a small fee, you can walk around this amazing oasis and admire the various animals that inhabit its grounds, including friendly donkeys, goats, rabbits and peacocks.

Neptunus boat tour

Submarine Neptune

Take the bright yellow Neptunus boat with its transparent bottom for a boat trip off the coast of Sal Island. This tour includes a visit to two shipwreck sites and the underwater statue “Christ of the Seas”.

Those wishing to dive here should not forget that the sea near Cape Verde can be very choppy.

The main sights of Boa Vista are

Sal Rey

Sal-Rei

The capital of the island of Boa Vista is the small town of Sal Rey, which has only 6,000 inhabitants. But it is definitely worth a visit, as there are many beaches, souvenir stores and inexpensive restaurants. In the evenings, live music plays in the town’s main square, where locals and tourists gather. But on hot days, beach clubs with access to the private Praia do Estoril beach are the most attractive places to stay. Here you’ll find clubbing establishments for all tastes, from Boa Vista Social Club with beach chairs on the sand and electronic music playing there to Morabeza, a kite surfer’s favorite hangout.

Shipwreck Site

Shipwreck Site

One of the most popular excursions to Boa Vista is the Cabo Santa Maria shipwreck site, where you can admire the rusty wreck of a ship that ran aground here in 1968. The best option is to book an ATV excursion, which would include a trip through the beach dunes and a visit to the island’s landmark.

Such a ride will allow you to admire the most contrasting landscapes of Boa Vista: heather trees against a backdrop of deserted rocky landscapes and sand dunes of beaches. At the end of the trail you will see the rusted remains of the ship with the best-preserved hulk. The waves on the island’s north shore are quite strong, and it is particularly interesting to see them crashing against the rusted hull of the ship in their path.

Fogu

Day trips to Fogu are offered both on the island of Sal and on Boa Vista. In Portuguese, the name of this Cape Verdean island means “fire,” a vivid reminder of the country’s only still-active volcano. The summit of Fogo rises majestically over the island. You can climb to it, which takes about 6 hours. If this kind of active holiday seems too extreme, you can just enjoy relaxing on the beaches of black sand and stroll among the colorful houses of the town of Cova Figueira.

Santiago

Santiago

This is the largest island of the archipelago, which is the capital of the state – Praia. If you want to get the most vivid picture of Cape Verde, this is the best place among all the islands. The landscapes of this island are represented by all the characteristic natural features of other islands. There are picturesque beaches and valleys as well as impressive volcanic landscapes.

Santo Antão

Santo Antão

Unlike the other islands of the archipelago, Santo Antão attracts tourists with its amazingly picturesque landscapes with emerald vegetation, canyons, gorges and valleys. It is the best place in West Africa for exotic tourism.

San Vicente

San Vicente

If you want to get the most vivid idea of Cape Verdean culture, you should go to this very island. Mindelo is considered the cultural center of the country. This picturesque Mediterranean-style town is the birthplace of the morn and the most famous performer of this style of music – Cesaria Évora, whose name is known not only in Cape Verde, but also all over the world. But in modern bars nowadays you can hear Brazilian pop music more and more often, but, as before, there are mostly live performances. The February carnival or the music festival held on a full moon in August right on the city beach are especially interesting to visit.
