This is important! If you’re going to Sri Lanka for the first time, order a cab – it’s the safest way to get around. You are guaranteed not to get lost. However, the route is simple and from your second trip to Bentota you can use public transport – bus or train, or rent a car.

This is the most budget and at the same time the slowest way. The train runs along the entire coast, the main drawback is that only 2nd and 3rd class cars run.

From the airport to the bus station there is a bus number 187. The train station is located near the bus station, a couple of minutes walk. Train fare is $0.25 to $0.6. The best way to get to the hotel is to take a tuk-tuk, which will cost an average of $0.7 to $1.

You can check the current prices and schedules on the Lankan railroad website at www.railway.gov.lk.

This is important! There are two types of buses to the resort – private (white) and public (red).

Bus 02 which can be taken from Colombo to Bentota

Travel by bus is two-step:

  • From the airport to the bus station, there is flight No. 187, which costs about $1;
  • to Bentota follow routes 2, 2-1, 32 and 60, the ticket costs just under $1, the trip takes about 2 hours.

Check the map beforehand to see where the hotel is located in relation to the Bentota Ganga River. If you need to rent a tuk-tuk, choose a vehicle marked “taxi-meter”, in this case the trip will be cheaper.

Planning to travel by rented car? Get ready for left-hand traffic, chaos, drivers and pedestrians who do not follow the rules.

In Sri Lanka, the roads between cities are smooth and of good quality, the trip will take 2 to 3 hours. Be sure to consider the speed limits, left-hand traffic and the fact that the rules are poorly enforced. The main people on the road are always buses! You have to accept this fact and be careful.

The optimal route from the airport to the resort – highways E03, then highways B214 and AB10, then the highway E02 and E01, the last leg of the route is the highway B157. Routes E01, 02 and 03 are toll roads.

This way is the most expensive, but comfortable. The most convenient way is to book a transfer to the hotel you are planning to stay in, find a driver near the airport building, or at the exit of the terminal by an official cab. The trip will take no more than 2 hours and costs from $45 to $60.

As a side note. If you want to save money on your trip, look for like-minded people on social networks before you travel.

There is a misleading information on the Internet that there is a ferry service between India and Sri Lanka, however, this is not entirely true. The ferry does run, but only by cargo.

Weather and climate, when it’s better to go

Part of the garden at Lunuganga Manor

In memory of the colonial period there are architectural monuments that can be called a creative explosion of emotion – the estate with gardens of architect Bivis Bawa Lunuganga. When Bawa purchased the site in 1948, it was nothing more than an abandoned estate located on a promontory by Lake Dedduva, 2 km from the coast of Bentota. But over the next fifty years, he painstakingly transformed it into one of the most seductive, passionate gardens of the twentieth century.

Elements of Italian Renaissance gardening, English landscape design, Japanese garden art, and the water garden of ancient Sri Lanka all mingled with classical Greco-Roman statues posing unconcernedly and bacchanalian grotesque sculptures glistening from tangle-like undergrowth. Precise, orthogonal lines suddenly yield to baroque serpentine contours. Everything is absorbed by foliage of deep green hues. There are elements of wrought iron, stone, concrete and clay in the design of the garden.
