Provence – the romantic south of France

Provence – the romantic south of France

Even the natives find it difficult to define the exact boundaries of their country, which stretches from the Alps in the north to the blue sea in the south. Provence encloses the Camargue to the west and beautiful Nice to the east.

And yet, where does lavender, the symbol of Provence, bloom? The tart-sweet landscape with its noble vineyards and fragrant flowering fields stretches from the Mont Ventoux massif through the fertile valleys and dry plateaus of the Vaucluse to the forested hills of the Luberon. Where, in the midday heat, a fountain quietly splashes in the village square and old men play boules, it is the birthplace of Provence. Protected by cypress groves from sultry winds, apricots and artichokes ripen. The villages of Gordes and Roussillon blend harmoniously with the ochre-colored cliffs. On the plain, Carpentras and Cavaillon lure with their bazaars, whose history is typical of many towns in the region.

Nature and culture

At the beginning of the first millennium, Provence was a northern province of the Roman Empire, hence its name. Today it is famous for a considerable number of Roman buildings. The splendid amphitheatres at Arles and Nîmes, the ancient theater at Orange and the Pont du Gard aqueduct, all of which are still intact. The Middle Ages have also left their mark, with its Romanesque monasteries, among which Senanc is reputed to be one of the most beautiful. In Arles you will be astonished by the sculptures of the portal of the Church of Saint-Trophim.

The blossoming of a knightly culture can be seen in the remains of fortresses, only the imposing bastion at Tarascon survives. The beauty of Provence, created by nature, conquered the world on the paintings of the great masters: Paul Cezanne was in love with Montagne Saint-Victoire, the bright light inspired Vincent van Gogh, and nature in all its purity did not leave Paul Gauguin indifferent. And today the diversity of Provence is simply overwhelming.
