                                                      Big Buddha

                                                      Big Buddha

                                                      Big Buddha.

On top of Nakkerd Hill, northwest of Chalong Ring, sits majestically the Big Buddha, a 45-meter statue covered in snow-white Burmese alabaster. Visible from almost half the island, it is considered one of the main attractions of Phuket.

The bells hung all over the place are primarily for tourists, but you have to admit, their ringing brings an energetic pulse to the space.

Pay your respects to the shrine, and then climb the magnificent plateau, which offers beautiful views of the golden sands of Kata and Karon beaches and of Chalong Bay on the opposite side, to the southeast.

                                                      Bang Tao Beach.

The beautiful 8-kilometer long Bang Tao is one of Phuket’s longest and most romantic beaches. Those who set foot on its pearlescent sand have the only wish – to do nothing.

The mid-range bungalows at the southern end of the beach, the Laguna Hotel complex at the center, and several beach clubs at the southern and northern ends also make for a relaxing pastime.

The sparkling Andaman Sea that washes over Phuket is best admired at the southernmost point of the island, Cape Promthep.

You will probably want to stay here for a while, because besides the observation deck on the cape you will see a spectacular elephant temple, as well as an interesting building, on one side resembling a lighthouse, on the other – a concrete crab.

Toward evening, buses start pulling up to the cape with tourists eager to admire the sunset. If you want solitude, follow the faintly visible fishing trail under the mountain to watch the sunset from the rocky spit out to the ocean.

The Siam Niramit Show is a grand theatrical performance about the history of Thailand. More than a hundred actors are involved in the production. The colorfulness and realism of the scenery is amazing. The breathtaking spectacle is divided into three acts, each of which covers a specific topic (history, religion, and holidays).

The main hall of the show is located in a picturesque park. In addition to the show itself, tourists can see the original Thai village built in the park. The park has two restaurants and a floating market.

A 30-minute tour of the distillery begins with a mojito made with the delicious rum that is produced here. In addition to the tours, Chalong Bay also hosts periodic two-hour cocktail-making master classes.

The landscapers who designed the Phuket Botanic Garden managed to fit 20 different species of plants into one hectare of land. Each corner of the garden is organically integrated into the general concept of the kingdom of terrestrial flora. The pedestrian route for visitors is laid out in such a way that groups walking in opposite directions do not cross each other.

In addition to the typical vegetation of the tropics, picturesque corners in English, Japanese and Chinese style can be admired in the garden. The aquatic wealth of the Earth is represented by an artificial waterfall, river and pond. The entertainment program includes a visit to the museum, gift store and restaurant.

This tiny donation-funded sanctuary takes in gibbons that were previously held in captivity for rehabilitation in hopes of returning them to their natural habitat.

Volunteers working there are responsible for providing educational information to visitors, cleaning cages, feeding animals, and tracking gibbons released into the wild.

During your tour of the sanctuary, you can meet the wards of the Center. However, you cannot get too close to the animals, which is usually very frustrating for children.

If you arrive at the Rehabilitation Center around 9 a.m., you are very likely to hear the gibbons’ morning song.

                                                      National Museum in Thalang.

Talang Museum chronicles the history of Phuket from prehistoric times to the era of tin mining. Visitors to the museum learn about the different ethnic groups that inhabited (or inhabited) southern Thailand.

One of the museum exhibits will tell you the legend of the “two heroines” who in the 18th century prevented the Burmese invasion by bringing women to the battle, dressed in men’s clothes.

By the way, 200 meters southwest of the museum is a monument to these heroines, much revered in Phuket.

Things to see in Phuket with children

There are plenty of places to go in Phuket with a child. Here are, in my opinion, the best of them:

                                                      • The bird park on the island, though not very big, but interesting. Children will definitely love the bird show, and feeding parrots will not leave anyone indifferent. You can read my review of the bird park in this article. Bird park tickets are on sale at $4 off on Kluk →
                                                      • Water parks in Phuket – the most famous and popular water parks are Splash Jungle Water Park (on the map) in the north of the island, Rawai Park (on the map) on Rawai Beach and Blue Tree on Bang Tao Beach (on the map).
                                                      • Dolphinarium – good reviews, the children remain delighted. On the website Kluk tickets are sold at a discount. You can buy different seats (regular, deluxe, VIP) and book a transfer to the dolphinarium.
                                                      • Aquarium – there are two aquariums in Phuket. The first is located at Cape Panwa. It is inexpensive, a lot of interesting things. The second has recently opened and is considered the largest aquarium in Thailand. Located in the new Central Festival. You can buy tickets in advance with a discount.

You can see all these places by yourself, or you can take a tour “Children’s tour of Phuket”.

                                                      Excursions for kids in Phuket

The bird park is interesting for both children and adults. Read more about bird park

                                                      Chinpracha House

                                                      Chinpracha House

                                                      Chinpracha House.

This beautifully preserved Chinese-Portuguese style mansion, built in 1903, is sure to appeal to lovers of ancient architecture.

The interior decoration of the house is no less interesting. Of course, many will think that steel beds with canopies of Victorian lace look a little tasteless today.

But the historic interior details – gorgeous Italian ceramic tile, blue and white shutters on the windows, antique black and white family portraits, and a carp pond in the patio – give a vivid picture of the lives of wealthy families a century ago.

The house is still inhabited today: the sixth generation of descendants of the first owner, Phra Pitak Chinpracha, who made his fortune in the tin industry, lives there.

What to see in Phuket with a tour

Besides all the places I listed, there are many islands near Phuket that you can only get to with a guided tour. There are a few more iconic shows to visit. There are free sightseeing tours of the island, where you will be shown Big Buddha and Kata Karon Viewpoint, and then the whole day will take you to crocodile farms and latex factories.

In order not to get lost in the variety of excursions, I made a small list of places to go and see:

                                                      1. Similan Islands are definitely the most beautiful islands in Thailand. In Similans to see sea turtles and the rich underwater world of Andaman, even without diving. You can go on a day trip, or you can spend the night. If you get motion sickness, be sure to take a pill for motion sickness.
                                                      2. Islands Phi Phi and James Bond Island – a one-day excursion to the legendary islands costs 1250 baht. The tour includes transfers to and from the hotel, lunch, snack, water, visit the islands of Phi Phi, Maya Bay (where the movie was filmed with DiCaprio), Monkey Island and James Bond Island. Lots of snorkeling, lots of fish. This was the first excursion we bought in Phuket. You can either buy an excursion from Thais on the street, or order online on Kluk (now at a discount) →
                                                      3. Cheo Lan Lake is the Thai “Avatar.” I could choose different epithets to describe Cheo Lan, but better to see once than hear a hundred times. Here is the excursion to Cheo Lan, and here is the story of how we drove ourselves from Phuket by car.
                                                      4. Raya island & Coral island is an easy day trip to the islands for snorkeling. There is a report about the excursion on the blog. You can buy the tour either from Thais on the street or buy online on Kluk for 905 baht →

The Orchid Garden has been in operation since 1975. There are over 20,000 species and hybrids of orchids as well as other plants growing here. Visitors can see really beautiful flowers, learn how to grow orchids and how to take care of them. That being said, tourists are always given beautiful orchids, not just offered flowers for sale.

Freedom Beach is also accessible by land, via a pathway leading from the parking area behind the southern end of Patong, 900 meters south of Avista Hideaway Hotel.

Address: Freedom Beach, Ratprachanukroh Road, Patong, Kathu District, Phuket, Thailand.

Night markets in Phuket are markets that are open until 10 or 11 pm. Some of them work stationary, others migrate, spontaneously forming near the beaches. The range of night markets in Phuket is extensive. In small stalls and stores you can buy clothes, electronics, souvenirs. Produce aisles are filled with all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Especially in demand are stalls with ready-made meals. At them you can try dishes of Thai cuisine cooked in front of the buyer.

                                                      My Phuket Review

If the reviews about what to see in Phuket are not original (tourists go to the same 5-7 places), then the vacation in Thailand itself evokes more feedback.

We love Asia and the most popular resort in Thailand – Phuket. Every year there are more and more tourists and less authentic places, but it only gives Phuket its new unique look, which will find its own lover. The only thing that upsets me deeply is the trash, which is also becoming more and more.

Everyone comes here for something different. Travel around Phuket by bike or car, try your hand at Thai boxing, meditate on a deserted beach, or relax in a luxury hotel and eat fruit… You can see everything here: the bad and the good elements of Thai tourism – from crowded beaches and sex tourism to tiny villages without tourists and rainforests with waterfalls.

Most tourists go to the developed south of Phuket, to the beaches of Karon, Kata and Patong. If you do not like the noise, you need to stay away from Patong. The northern part of the island is one of our favorite places in all of Thailand to visit. It’s a paradise without the crowds, the crazy tourists and the markups.
