The monument to the Battle of Cahul in Vulcanesti was included in the list of unusual monuments in Moldova

The monument to the Cahul battle in Vulcanesti has been included in the list of unusual monuments of Moldova. Also on the list were the Thanksgiving Candle, the Tower of the Winds, the monument at the Dougie Struve Point, as well as monuments to the first tractor, Kelly Grines, Charles XII, the Mig-19P aircraft, the steam locomotive Gr-255, one bane, virginity and the Memorial to the victims of AIDS.

A symbol of Vulcanesti town is the monument of Cahul battle, erected in 1848 on the place of victory of Russian army in the battle of Cahul in 1770 – one of the major battles of Russian-Turkish war 1768-1774, designed by F. K. Boffo.

Over the Bujak steppe rises a monument – a symbol of victory – almost 22-meter column on a pedestal, topped with a capitel with a cast-iron cross and a crescent moon. On the north side of the pedestal is the count’s coat of arms of the Rumyantsevs, and below it is the text: “On the 21st of July 1770 count Peter Alexandrovich Rumyantsev with seventeen thousand Russian soldiers defeated the Turkish army of 150 thousand men under the command of the Supreme Vizier Halil Pasha”.

The image of the monument is the central element of the modern coat of arms of the city of Vulcanesti.

Candle of Thanksgiving

The memorial complex, which is located on the top of Bakir Mountain in Soroca, is called “Badia Mior” and is adorned by the “Candle of Thanksgiving” monument. The memorial commemorates the destroyed monuments of Moldovan culture. The monument “Candle of Thanksgiving” is made of stone and is more than 29 meters high. Inside the structure is a small chapel with an iconostasis. There is also a book in the chapel in which anyone can write their deepest wish. From below to the monument lead about six hundred stone steps. At the foot of the stairs is an arch, and next to it lies a stone with the inscription: “Traveller, stop! At the top, the Candle of Thanksgiving burns. And if in your life you consider yourself grateful to anyone, for anything, go up, pray, and walk.”

The memorial was opened on Easter Eve eleven years ago with donations and funds from the state budget. The initiator of the construction was the famous Moldovan poet Ion Druta.

Monument at the point of Duga Struve

The Struve Arc, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, passes through the village of Rudi. There used to be 27 stopping points in Moldova, which were used to make measurements for international maps. Currently, only one point remains in the country. It is located in an apple orchard, 300 meters from the Soroca-Otaci highway.

For those who don’t know: Struve Arc is the network of 265 triangulation points, which are laid in the ground as stone cubes with edge length of 2 meters and a length of more than 2820 kilometers. It was created to determine the parameters of the Earth, its shape and size. Simply put, it was thanks to these objects that it was proved that the Earth has the shape not of a perfect sphere, but of an ellipsoid.

A total of 34 Struve Arc sites have survived, one of which is located in Moldova, on the outskirts of the village of Rudy.

Monument to the first tractor

In Causeni you can see an unusual sight – a monument to the first tractor. The monument can be found at the entrance to Causani.

Monument to Kelly Grines

The monument to one of the biggest investors in the Republic of Moldova, Kelley Grains, founder of the “Elevator Kelley-Grains” JSC, is erected in Causeni. The authors of the idea say that with this gesture, the Moldovan authorities appreciated the American businessman’s contribution to the implementation of advanced technologies in the agro-industrial sector of the Causeni district.

Kelly Grines, who died at the age of 80, was one of the 10 richest men in the United States. Thanks to him, the largest Causeni elevator in Moldova was built, with a capacity of 135 thousand tons, making it the third largest in the world. On him, by the way, you can also look.

Monument to Charles XII

In 1925, the Romanian authorities, at the request of Sweden, erected a monument to Charles XII in the village of Varnitsa, in the place where the third camp of the Swedish king, who had taken refuge in Bender from the persecutions of Peter I, was located. At the site where the monument was installed (by the way, on Charles XII Street) the Moldovan authorities are planning to open a museum complex, a branch of one of Kishinev’s state museums, about which there is an information panel in Romanian and English languages.

The project was initiated by the Swedish nongovernmental organization Nordisk kultur och history formed with the financial support of the European Union and Sweden.

The Mig-19P memorial plane

Installed this interesting monument in Floresti presumably at the end of the 70s. It is known that the plane was donated for the monument by the Marculesti aviation regiment, located 5 km from Floresti. The memorial plaque has the inscription: “To the pilots-liberators from grateful descendants”.

A memorial steam locomotive Gr-255

The steam engine-monument Gr-255 was brought in Balti because it was planned to build a children’s railroad here. This project was not realized. Now it is very strange to see a narrow gauge steam locomotive in an absolutely “untracked” Moldova.

Obelisk of Glory

Kitskan bridgehead – a strategic bridgehead of the Soviet troops on the western bank of the Dniester River. About 3 km from the village of Kitskany at the highest point of the Kitskansky bridgehead built a memorial to fallen in the Iasi-Kishinev operation in 1944. In May 1972 on the Victory Day in Kitskansky heights was opened Obelisk of Glory monument. The location of the monument is very favorable, and from its observation deck there is an impressive view of the surrounding countryside.

Tower of the Winds

The Tower of the Winds is an architectural monument of the 19th century not far from Stroenets. It is in the shape of a pergola and was built in the late 19th century by Emilia Trubetskoy in memory of her father, Russian Field Marshal General Peter Khristianovich Wittgenstein, whose manor was located nearby. A bust of Peter Wittgenstein, made of bronze, once stood inside the gazebo. The pavilion is located on a high steep cliff over the Dniester. It is built of hewn stone, the height is 5 meters. Four square columns hold the hipped roof. Unfortunately, in 2002, a lightning hit partially destroyed one of the columns and the structure moved in the direction of the cliff. Now the monument is in an emergency condition and is a threat to arriving tourists. There has been a sign about it since 2006.

Next to the Tower of the Winds there is also the Countess’s House. They were built at almost the same time. From the picturesque old house there are beautiful views of the Dniester River and vineyards.

Virgin Monument

A monument to virginity “Monumentul Castității și al Fidelității” was erected in the Chisinau Arboretum. According to the ideological inspirer of the project, chairman of the public association “For the Family” Vasile Filat, the relevance of such a campaign is obvious. In recent years, more and more schoolchildren in Moldova have started early sexual life, which has provoked an increase in abortions and the birth of children out of wedlock.

A monument to a ban

An unusual monument has been erected on Grigore Vieru Boulevard in the capital, near the entrance to the National Bank of Moldova building. It is a monument to the smallest unit of national currency – 1 Banu.Initially, the coin is “wrong”, as the coat of arms on the reverse is upside down, which in terms of numismatics is a very valuable find: such a coin is rare and brings the owner good luck. Perhaps the installation will become not only an art object, but also a money mascot of the city.

Memorial to AIDS victims

In 2013, a memorial to AIDS victims was opened in the capital’s Stefan cel Mare Park. The monument was erected by the NGO Positive Initiative.

The monument is a park bench made of metal nuts, and 1,756 bolts – the number of people who died of AIDS in Moldova. Part of the bench has no screws, which symbolizes, according to the idea of the creators, a chance at life. The memorial was designed and made by designer Elena David and architect Ion David.
