Prices are about the same as indoor pools. If you and your kids don’t want the hassle of the Wimbledon tournament (see box on p. 255) but want to see some grass court tennis and some famous players, you can attend the Stella Artois Royal Tournament, held two weeks before the main event of the year. There’s a more relaxed atmosphere, tickets are easier to buy, and they’re cheaper (15 – 20).

A new ball, please! Despite the fact that Britain hosts a tournament – the premier tennis competition – Britons have an ambivalent attitude toward tennis. There are far fewer public courts than in most other countries, and consequently fewer top-level tennis players. The last Briton to win at Wimbledon was Fred Perry in the 1930s.

With the departure of Tim Henman (who reached the semifinals four times), there is only one player left in Britain, Andy Murray, who is one of the top 100 tennis players. For most of the year, the British public is not interested in tennis, but in the last two weeks of June, the sport is suddenly a favorite. The demand for tickets during the Wimbledon tournament is huge. To buy a ticket for the center court or Court 1, where the main matches are played, you have to apply in September of the previous year, and even then your chances of success are slim. But you can show up on match day and stand in line. The line starts to line up a few days before the tournament and can stretch for more than 1, 5 km.

You can buy tickets for Wimbledon, but they are very difficult to get, and even if you are lucky, they are not cheap. Central court ticket prices start at 38 on the first Monday and go up to 91 on the last Sunday. Prices on the outside courts are much lower and start at 20 on the first Monday (14 after 5 p.m.) and go down to 8 on the last weekend when fewer matches are played (5 after 5 p.m.). Here you also have a chance to buy oversold tickets for the exhibition courts; sales start at 2 p.m.
