Lake Mead

Lake Mead (photo)

Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the United States, located on the Colorado River, near Las Vegas. It was formed during the construction of the Hoover Dam. The lake is 110 miles (180 kilometers) long and has a total volume of water equal to 35 cubic kilometers. Long aqueducts carry water from the lake to numerous communities in Southern California and Nevada.

The name of the reservoir is connected with the name of Elwood Mead, who was the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Water Projects. The creation of the artificial lake was planned by engineers between 1924 and 1936, when the Hoover Dam project was being developed. Since such large-scale projects as the construction of a dam always carry the threat of flooding of adjacent territories, the residents of several settlements were evacuated before the start of the project.

The most famous of the towns that were in the flood zone was St. Thomas. Its last inhabitant left the city in 1938, and the ruins of St. Thomas can be seen when the water level drops heavily.

Thousands of tourists visit Lake Mead each year for recreation. The most popular activities are boating, fishing, water skiing and much, much more. There are many picturesque coves with rocky shores and beautiful beaches, as well as a small botanical garden.

The Mojave Desert of California will forever be remembered by anyone visiting The Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. For centuries there have been endless fields of poppies growing here, striking the imagination with a riot of colors.

Since 1971 the Antelope Valley has been a National Wildlife Refuge, created to preserve the unique poppy species. Picking flowers is strictly prohibited, as well as running through the meadows. Many special hiking trails have been created for visitors, leading through all the hills.

Taking pictures in Antelope Valley is not easy. The valley is subjected to powerful gusts of wind that knock you off your feet. In addition, the wind blows the carpets of flowers into a restless ocean, tossing and turning them into poppy waves of color.
