How the tribe with the most unusual eyes lives

Who are the Boutung people – people with the eyes of angels, who are lost in the Indonesian jungle

In the wilds of the Indonesian jungle lives the Butung tribe. They are distinguished from other peoples by a rare anomaly – bright blue, almost “electric” color of their eyes. Geologist Korchnoi Pasaribu photographed these extraordinary people, and his pictures instantly spread all over the Internet. Web users began to wonder where in Indonesia a whole nation with such an eye color appeared, because most of the locals are brown-eyed.

We, from AdMe.ru, were deeply impressed by the geologist’s photographs, and we are happy to share our delight with you. And we’ll also tell you more about the mysterious Boutung tribe.

The unusual eye color came from the Butung people for a reason. The fact is that it is associated with a rare genetic disease – Waardenburg syndrome. It is caused by mutations in the genes. Waardenburg syndrome is usually inherited and leads to heterochromia and hearing loss. People with the disease often have a “Greek” profile, a fairly wide back of the nose and crossed eyebrows. And 25% of syndrome sufferers have a gray strand of hair above the forehead or start graying early. According to researchers, the disease is present in one form or another in 1 of 42,000 people.

Waardenburg syndrome is not common, but there are quite a few such people in the Butung tribe. This may be due to the fact that they all live on the same island and, accordingly, many are related to each other. In addition, in some local villages preference is given to marriages with third cousins or sisters. This is done in order to preserve the property in the family.

Not all Boutungians suffer from the disease. Many members of this people have brown eyes, as do most Indonesians. Also on the island of Butung, where the tribe lives, you can also see people who have one eye blue and another – brown.

As the geologist Pasaribu clarified, the Butung people do not complain of poor eyesight, and the “electric” color of their eyes does not cause them any discomfort. He shared that the blue-eyed tribe is incredibly inspiring to him because, in his opinion, it is truly unique in its kind.

The geologist also said that the Butung people don’t feel uncomfortable being filmed at all and were happy to participate in the shoot. “They are very friendly, very welcoming. They’re not shy about being photographed,” he explained.

There’s another theory, though, as to why a number of Butungans have blue eyes. There is a small island south of Butung where the village of Kaimbuawa is located. It was there that Portuguese navigators landed many centuries ago. The colonists married princesses of the local royal family, and to this day their descendants flaunt blue eyes like their European ancestors.

In addition to abnormally bright eyes, the Boutung people have other things to be proud of. For example, take a look at Malige Palace. The four-story building is traditional in style and has been standing firmly on the ground without a single nail for years.

The Boutungians have their own unusual traditions. One of them, called “pusuo,” calls for isolating adolescent girls for four consecutive days. It is believed to help them reach puberty more quickly. Previously, the custom required teens to be left in seclusion for 40 days.

The pineapple is one of Butung’s symbols: its figures decorate houses and public places all over the island. However, pineapples do not grow here. The reason the fruit has become a symbol of the island is because pineapples can grow in different climates and adapt to any environment. Butungians associate themselves with the pineapple and believe that they too can adapt to different conditions.

Butung Island has impressive reserves of natural asphalt and some other minerals. But in recent years, residents have begun to realize that these places have enormous tourist potential that has yet to be fully realized. On the coast of the island there are many beaches with snow-white sand, washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. However, there is little developed infrastructure, unlike, for example, the most popular Indonesian resort of Bali.

The beauty of the people of the Boutung tribe is truly mesmerizing. When you look into their bottomless eyes, it seems as if the angels descended from heaven to settle in the tropical forests of the lost island.

Have you been mesmerized by the eyes of the people of the Butung tribe? And have you ever met representatives of different peoples themselves with unusual beauty?
