What is worth seeing in Balchik?

Antalya Suite

The interest in the resort town of Balchik is not limited to its beaches and hotels, of which there are indeed many. The city has quite a long history, numbering about three thousand years. Of course, from ancient times little has remained, but recently more and more often began to find evidence of past glory and beauty.

For example, six years ago, during the construction works and excavation works, ancient buildings were accidentally discovered. After analysis by archaeologists, it was determined that the find was part of a large complex built in the third century BC. During the excavations, which are quite active to this day, many objects were found that indicate that this complex functioned for at least seven centuries, and then as a result of a strong earthquake and landslide was buried under a layer of soil. The structures found are the temple of Cybele, who was considered in those days the mother of all gods. This structure was over a hundred meters in size. Today it is the largest temple of this kind found on the entire Balkan Peninsula and the best preserved. The interior decoration of the temple was rich enough, there were many statues among which the archaeologists found the figure of Cybele. The found artifacts are stored in the Historical Museum of Balchik. Currently the temple of Cybele is an item of national heritage of Bulgaria, and works are underway to restore it. Perhaps in the near future we will see this unique building in its original glory.

Since we are talking about the History Museum of Balchik, it should be noted that its visit will be very interesting. It was opened in 1937 and during that time its exposition was constantly replenished. However, the period of Romanian occupation did not pass over it and during it the museum was evacuated to Romania, and some exhibits were irrevocably lost. Today the exhibition consists of more than twenty thousand items, starting from ancient times until the middle of the last century. The museum collection is quite rich and is sure to be of great interest to visitors. The museum is situated in Dimitar Zheleva Street, 2. It is open daily except Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00 and lunch breaks from 12.00 to 13.00. The cost of admission is five levs.

One of the hallmarks of the resort, without a doubt, can be called the Palace of Queen Mary. Although a palace in the literal sense of the word it cannot be called a palace, as the complex consists of a dozen small villas and a chapel, which was the summer residence of the Romanian Queen Maria of Edinburgh, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England, who married the heir to the Romanian throne. The queen was an advocate of the convergence of different religions, and it was reflected in the image of the complex, which combined the opposing styles. The names of the different areas of the complex, such as Bridge of Sighs, Hanging Terraces, Garden of Allah or Wine Alley, speak volumes about this. In addition to the villas, some of which, incidentally, are rented to tourists, there is a beautiful botanical garden on the territory of the complex, where there are more than three thousand species of plants brought from different parts of the world. All plants are planted along numerous alleys, which are decorated with large clay pots, used in ancient times to store various products. Special pride of the botanical garden is a large collection of cacti, which has about two hundred and fifty species of this plant, and is considered one of the largest in Europe.

The ethnographic museum of Balchik, which is situated in a two-storey building, built more than one hundred and fifty years ago, offers an insight into the crafts of the local people in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The showcases display the tailor’s items used at that time by the local tailors. These include irons, scissors, and other tools. There are also examples of woodworking tools and blacksmithing. On the second floor of the museum various devices and machines of weaving are presented, as well as a large selection of clothes and jewelry that are displayed on mannequins. Art lovers can visit the Art Gallery, which presents paintings of Bulgarian and foreign artists. The building of the gallery is a large architectural structure, which is the pearl of the resort. On the first floor there are temporary exhibitions which are provided by other museums. The second floor houses the gallery’s permanent collection. The fate of the gallery did not escape the fate that befell the Historical Museum. During the Romanian rule all pictures were taken to Romania, and the collection had to be built anew. The museum is located on the street of Father Paisii,4. In summer the schedule is from 9.00 to 17.30, on Sunday and Monday off. 3 winter the museum is open from 8.30 to 17.00 and weekends on Saturday and Sunday. The entrance fee for an adult is five levs, children one lev.

In addition to the above attractions Balchik has others that deserve attention. There are Orthodox churches in the city, which were built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. One of them is the Church of Nicholas the Wonderworker, where daily services are held. The church is located on Hristo Botev Street,4 on the territory of the Bulgarian Revival Complex, which is also advisable to visit. In it you can see the development of education in Bulgaria and the classrooms of those times when students were subjected to corporal punishment for various offenses.
