Sri Lanka is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, here you can enjoy a light beach vacation or active but shocking excursions, or a combination of both, if your vacation time allows you to dive deeper into the colorful life of this country. The country is incredibly interesting, its history goes back centuries, before our era, nature is amazing with its diversity, long and beautiful sandy beaches, and the locals with their friendliness and hospitality.
Sri Lanka is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean, here you can enjoy a light beach vacation or active but shocking excursions, or a combination of both, if your vacation time allows you to dive deeper into the colorful life of this country. The country is incredibly interesting, its history goes back centuries, BC, nature is striking for its diversity, long and beautiful sandy beaches, and the locals for their friendliness and hospitality. In addition, it is perfectly safe and you can move around the country on your own. Every tourist can get acquainted with the ancient cities, monasteries, palaces, and centuries-old national parks.
My trip lasted ten days and began with the acquaintance with the most important attraction of the island – the Lion’s Mountain in Sigiriya. Sigiriya is a rocky plateau, with the remains of a 5th century AD royal palace, that rises above the plain in the heart of the island. There are 2,000 steps leading to the top of the mountain, first stone steps, then suspended steps. Once you reach the top, you have a stunning view of the endless jungle.
The next day we went to the Spice Garden. Here you can see how spices grow and see the most expensive sandalwood tree in the world. Next we went to the city of Kandy, which is an ancient city located in the center of the island on a hill. It is famous for its main attraction, the Temple of the Buddha’s Tooth. This shrine is revered by Buddhists around the world.
We also visited a factory for the production of precious stones. Precious and semi-precious stones are mined in Sri Lanka. It is very advantageous to buy the stones themselves, rather than jewelry made of them.
In Pannavel we had a very interesting excursion to the elephant nursery. It was specially created for cubs that were left without parents or suffered from poachers. You can watch the elephants bathe and watch the vets bottle-feed the elephants with milk. You can also ride elephants.
After all the excursions, we went from the center of the island to the south coast, to the resort of Cogalla. It is one of the most popular resorts among our tourists. The most popular hotels are located along the ocean and go one after another. Most of the rooms have a sea view. Stores and shops are 800 meters from the hotels. You can take public transportation to Galle and Unawatuna. The town of Kogalla itself is 1 km from the hotels. Very beautiful and wide beach, the entrance to the sea is gentle, suitable for children. During the season, namely from December to April, the waves are not as strong.
Review of hotels in Kogalla
The Long Beach Resort 3* – good food, almost all rooms overlook the sea, there is animation. Recommended for a quiet holiday.
Koggala Beach 3* – renovation 2015, all standard rooms with a sea view. There is a Russian channel.
Club Koggala Village 3* – only bungalow rooms with sea views, animation, big tennis, live music, show programs with folk dances.
The Beach Cabanas Retreat & Spa 4* – a small boutique hotel, suitable for couples. Menu-driven meals.
Unawatuna Resort Hotel Overview
Unawatuna – I really liked this resort. It is a quiet fishing village that nevertheless has many active and good fish and seafood establishments. There are places to go outside the hotels, close to stores, stalls. For young people the resort will also be interesting, as there are nightclubs, clubs, where you can learn to do water sports, including diving. Very good sea, no strong waves, you can safely go relax with children.
Gloria Grand Hotel 4* – a good hotel, but without territory. High rating. The sea is 150 meters from the hotel.
Calamander Unawatuna Beach Resort 4* – very nice hotel, right on the coast. Good beach, there are corals. Tourists can take a free diving lesson. Suitable for families with children.
Hotels in Forte Galle
Next we went to review the hotels in the town of Forte Galle. This port and settlement was founded by the Portuguese, then destroyed by the Dutch and rebuilt by them. Now it is a World Heritage Site “Unesco”.
Amari Galle 4* is a new hotel built this year right on the oceanfront. A high-level hotel with a beautiful area for a relaxing vacation. Very beautiful rooms all with a view of the sea, excellent food. Early check in for the hotel guests. The only minus of the hotel is mostly rocky shore and strong waves. There is a small lagoon with a sandy entrance. There is nothing near the hotel, only if you drive to town.
Which hotel to choose in Hikkaduwa
Hikkaduwa is one of the most popular resorts among our tourists. Especially popular among young people, fans of diving, surfing. Nearby is a beautiful coral reef. Also nearby there are discos, ayurvedic centers, stores, cafes.
Citrus Hikkaduwa 3* – simple rooms, on the first coastline, but the beach is bad, stony bottom, there are corals, 5 minutes walk to the beach, where there are fewer waves and a good entrance to the sea.
Coral Sands 4* – nice rooms, all decent, excellent food, all rooms with a view of the sea.
Lanka Supercorals 2* – of all three hotels the most decent, although 2*. Renovated in 2015, good rooms. All rooms with a view of the sea.
Ahungalla is a small and quiet resort, which is suitable for families with children, as the beaches here have a gentle approach to the sea. It is best recommended to tourists the two neighboring coastal hotels Riu Ahungalla 5* and Heritance Ahungalle 5*.
Riu Ahungalla 5* is an all-inclusive hotel. The hotel is very new, with beautiful rooms, with a large and green area, it has everything for a comfortable stay for all categories of tourists. Guests who were here also praise the food, the beauty of the beaches. Evening and day, children’s and adult animation is also not a level. Work spa and disco “Pacha”.
Heritance Ahungalle 5* – very beautiful and green area, beautiful rooms, very diverse food, for dinner we were given lobsters. There are swimming pools with jacuzzi in the air, a lot of animals: chipmunks, birds, varanas. Recommended.
Hotels in Bentota
Bentota is the most popular resort among our and not only our tourists, it is located in the south-west of the island, and is located between the mouth of the river and the ocean. Here is an excellent infrastructure, gentle beaches, no strong waves, plenty of stores, cafes and restaurants. All these advantages and attract tourists to this resort. Nearby is a railroad. From here there is a train to Colombo.
Avani Bentota Resort & Spa 5* is a nice hotel, I liked it for its well-kept area and tidy rooms. It has a river on one side and the ocean on the other, this location offers wonderful views. Guests here can enjoy water sports, visit a good spa center. Near the complex is a small town of Alutgama.
Centara Ceysands Resort & Spa 4 * – as well as AVANI Bentota, located between the river Bentota and the ocean, such a good location indicates that the balcony of almost every room offers inviting views of the surrounding nature. This complex can be recommended to holidaymakers with children, as there is a mini game club for them. The food here is delicious and varied. There is animation, live music, themed dinners. Shuttle service across the river.
Vivanta by Taj Bentota 5* – an amazing hotel! Very beautiful and green area, delicious and varied food. Beautiful wide beach, the entrance to which is smooth and safe. Every day there is a colorful show, and in the evenings there is live music. A specialty of this hotel – in the pool on the roof, swimming in it you can enjoy stunning views of the ocean. This fact and the high level of service will certainly appeal to all tourists, both families and more independent people who appreciate comfort and convenience.
A few words about Beruvela
Beruvela is a small city in Kalutara district, close to the famous Bentota.
Cinnamon Bey Beruwala 5* – large area, very tasty food, there is a deluxe relax zone, wide beach, you can see the coral reef, it also holds back strong waves, forming a natural pool, where you can swim in peace.
Eden Resort & Spa 5* is a decent hotel for a relaxing holiday, beautiful rooms, green area and a good spa center. Recommended for couples without children.
Kalutara is one of the most popular tourist cities in the southwestern part of the country. And all because here is a huge stupa – Stupa Gangatilaka Vihara, it is visible to everyone, a few kilometers before approaching the city.
Anantara Kalutara Resort 5* is an exquisite relaxation hotel with beautiful architecture, located between the river and the ocean. It is new, has a large and landscaped area. Here functions a spa salon, where do ayurvedic massage. And on arrival, guests are greeted solemnly with dancing.
