General Information

The Midwest Fall Craft Festival is held in April. At Easter there are organized Dongar races and Easter egg hunts. July – October : cool to moderate temperatures. Wildflower season. The Irvine Area Charity Ball is held in October and the Midwest Show & Shine in September 2021, as well as the Denison Foreshore Sprint. The Donghar Markets open the first Saturday of each month.

4. Be sure to devote three to four days to these cities. 5. Both localities have gas stations, supermarkets, delis, bakeries, restaurants, cafes, a hotel and good Telstra cell phone coverage. Free WiFi is available on the main street of the town , as well as at the Port Denison marina . Public toilets are located in the city park and on the marina, where there is a barbecue area.

The best attractions and activities in the cities

1. Port Denison Marina

Take a stroll around the marina, home to the city’s impressive crawfish fishing fleet. Relax on the grassy shore or find a shady spot to sit, eat fish and chips and watch the boats go by, barbecue. There is a children’s playground and free WiFi. During crayfish season, you can buy them fresh and other seafood at the marina.

1. Port Denison Marina

Take the Fisherman’s Trail, a 2.7 kilometer walk along the beachfront and city streets that begins at the Fisherman’s Lookout and Obelisk. From here you get a spectacular panorama of the harbor and its crayfishing fleet. The obelisk pays tribute to the many who died at sea, as do a number of plaques that tell of shipwrecks and the town’s rich maritime history .

Head south on this loop from Coles Way along South Beach and then return to the pier via the ruins of the Old Wharf. Depending on your pace, this walk can take up to an hour.

2. Surfing, Swimming and Sandboarding

South Beach is just a few kilometers from downtown Port Denison and is a local favorite for surfing, kitesurfing, paddleboarding and swimming. Take your car for a drive on this family-friendly beach and dog-walking area with a cafe offering refreshments and food.

2. Surfing, Swimming and Sandboarding

Head to Surf Beach (also known as Arurin Bay) for safe beach breaks and gentle waves. Pick up a surfboard, kayak, bike, snorkelling gear or golf cart for hire in town at Dongara Breeze Inn.

Watch movies under the stars at one of the few remaining open-air cinemas. Since 1966, it’s been showing new movies that you can watch without getting out of your car or sitting in a chair. It is open from September through May and is on the corner of Port Leander Drive and Ridley Street. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. Come early at peak times to guarantee a seat, and don’t forget your plaid. Bring your own food, or drinks can be ordered in the dining room.

Walk one of the Tungarra hiking trails that will take you to the most beautiful parts of Port Denison and Dongara and immerse you in the maritime history of the Coral Coast. Tungarra is an Aboriginal word meaning “place of seals” beautifully captured in an art installation on the banks of the Irvine River near the main highway bridge.

Stop by the visitor center for a brochure detailing hiking trails ranging from 2.7 kilometers to 9 kilometers. The level of difficulty ranges from easy to moderate, and the trails can be hiked at any time of year.

Enjoy a peaceful hike along the banks of the Irwin River, which separates the twin townships of Port Denison and Dongara . It’s an easy 4.6 kilometer walk along the riverbed and boardwalk where you’ll see pelicans, black swans and numerous waterfowl in a protected estuary with panoramic views. Bird-watching enthusiasts – don’t forget to bring your camera . Walk past the old Denison House Monastery on this scenic walk, which can be done year-round. Park on the banks of the Irvine River, right off Leander Street . Or stop at the lookout on Church Street.

How to get to the towns.

The roads in both towns are well paved, making it easy to get around on foot or by bicycle. If you want to travel between the twin cities, it is most convenient to travel by car because of the distance.

What you will need on your trip

Take beach and water supplies for the warmer months, shoes for walking, a picnic basket, a blanket, a fishing rod, and a camera. There are lots of insects in the summer, so don’t forget insect repellent and a hat. In winter and spring, bring a sweater and pants, as it can be chilly. If available, a bicycle, kayak, and snorkeling gear wouldn’t hurt.

There are two options for driving from Perth . The more scenic road across the Indian Ocean is being upgraded at some points. Road work can cause delays. The route is recognized as one of the riskiest roads, use caution when overtaking , keep a safe distance and drive carefully.

What you will need on the road

Some sections of the highway have sound markings around the edges and in the center to reduce the risk of head-on collisions. Or get to your destination on the Brand Highway, which is also a sealed and well-maintained road with several lanes for overtaking. Watch for wildlife, especially kangaroos, during dusk and dawn hours.

These are family-friendly villages, with children walking and biking all the time, so drive slowly. Before you hit the road, read other tips for driving long distances.
