Dive into the depths of the Indigo vet in Corsica

There are few places where nature has done so well as in Corsica. The small island’s wild mountains are covered in dense forests, and crystal-clear lakes sparkle in the gaps between the rock towers. Rushing rivers rush through rugged mountain valleys, their mighty roar completely drowning out the peacefully flowing streams. The coast, abundant with picturesque bays, dotted with kilometers of clean beaches of fine sand. The unique natural character and peculiar image of Corsica attracts particularly keen hikers, its dense network of well-marked trails suits both hardy hikers and families with small children. Cycling enthusiasts are particularly attracted by Castagniccia, Casinca, Cap Cors, the inland mountains and the west coast, while climbers will find their own, as the Aiguilles de Bavella is one of the most famous areas.

The blue-green waters of the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian seas that lap the island offer many fantastic diving spots, making Corsica a popular diving destination. Near the town of Calvi, dominated by the majestic citadel which, according to local legend, is the birthplace of Christopher Columbus, the American B17 bomber, whose four-engined wings and seats, covered with mushrooms of various colors, make a monumental impression, invites you to the sandy bottom at a depth of 30 meters.

During World War II, its mission was to drop bombs on a railroad junction near Verona, Italy, and thus prevent the supply of German troops. However, during the attack, enemy fighters managed to severely damage the plane, leading to the tragic death of three of the ten crew members and forcing the plane to make an emergency landing on the water. A relatively easy but very beautiful dive is possible near the town of Tizzano in Mortoli Bay.

Gdansk is a historical pearl of northern Poland.

In 1950, the pilot of a twin-engine propeller plane Vickers Vicking was forced to make an emergency landing on the sea surface due to engine failure, saving the lives of the crew and all passengers who managed to swim safely to a nearby shore. Today, at a depth of about 12 meters the torso of the British plane with a wingspan of 27 meters rests on the sandy seabed. It is still a refuge for shoals of small fish but is being slowly destroyed by the powerful currents. The Smillante, a French frigate, has a stone monument more than eight meters high to commemorate the disaster, which ended miserably.

In 1855, the 54 meter three-meter frigate of the French Navy called Smillante was lost during a storm, thick fog and strong winds and subsequently sank. Nearly 600 passengers died in the disaster, and their bodies were washed by the sea for weeks on rocky shores on the southern island of Lavezzo. The remains of the victims were eventually fished out of the sea and buried in the Cimetire de La Smillante cemetery on the island. At a depth of 16 meters in this place lie the remains of a shipwreck.

Between the islets of Lavecu and Cavallo o is the M√©rouville Nature Reserve, which gets its name from the French “mrou” which means “sea bass”. If you want to enjoy continuous diving, get up early in the morning – this is a very popular diving spot and, especially in good weather, boats with divers depart from the nearby base at Bonifacio , a fortified medieval town built on high chalky white limestone cliffs, after 8 am. Among the massive submerged blocks of granite, covered with bunches of golden gorgonians, one can find octopuses and other Mediterranean animals, for example. Huge canaries and tiny salps or priests scurry back and forth, while camouflaged toad fish and colorful starfish laze at the bottom.

In the nearby bay of Porto Vecchio perfectly preserved wreck of a 50 meter ship with the characteristic name “La Pecorella”, i.e. “The Sheep”. which the drunken captain drove straight onto the reef, making a huge hole in the bottom, invites you to take light dives at a depth of 12 meters.

Two beautiful shipwrecks, lying on the sandy bottom deep in the indigo sea, can be found near the town of Linguizzetta. The first of these lies 35 meters deep and is often described as the most beautiful wreck in Corsica. It is the 55 meter long Italian freighter Alcione, which sank in 1943. Another very well preserved B25 bomber with an intact machine gun. It was sunk during World War II and still rests at a depth of 20 meters, where it attracts even novice divers. The latter may want to make use of Jean-Marie Espervi, a young but experienced certified diver and marine biologist who enthusiastically shares his passion and knowledge of underwater fauna and flora with other divers .

The severed “tail” lying next to an American P-47 Thunderbolt fighter jet that sank near the town of Santa Severa is evidence of an emergency landing on the sea surface. Although its fuselage and algae-covered wings have long been coveted by various sea creatures, including menacing-looking morays, its surviving cannons and machine guns still stick dangerously out from 38 meters below the surface.

Corsica will not disappoint if you prefer to travel for sightseeing and history. For example, visit the romantic port town of Ajaccio, birthplace of the great Napoleon Bonaparte, the picturesque seaside resort of Porto with its unique, well-preserved Genoese watchtower, towering over the Golf du Porto. The nearby Scandola Nature Reserve is easily accessible by boat from Porto. The unique terrestrial and underwater Mediterranean fauna includes dolphins and sea lions, unusual fish species and numerous colonies of gulls and cormorants. Flora includes hundreds of species of seaweed and other aquatic plants.
