Where to go to Cambodia: Cambodia resorts
There are not too many resorts and tourist places in Cambodia. The most popular of them are Siem Reap (Angkor temple complex), Phnom Penh (the capital) and Cambodia’s only popular beach resort – Siem Reap. The bulk of tours and excursions will take you to these places.
But there are a few much less popular provincial towns in Cambodia, such as Battambang, Kampot, which as a complete place to travel can not be considered, and to visit them only for a pass, well, or a maximum of 1-2 days. Below is a map of Cambodia resorts with marked border crossings, a table of seasons for Cambodia resorts and a brief description of each of them.

Siem Reap (Siem Reap, also Siem Reap, Simrep, Siem Reap, etc.) is a city in northern Cambodia, the main stopover point for tourists to access the temples of the Angkor Archaeological Park (most commonly referred to simply and erroneously as Angkor Wat). The city was founded in 802 and its name literally translates as “Siam vanquished”. This name the city received in the 16th century in honor of the victory over Thailand.
From a tourist point of view, Siem Reap, as an interesting tourist destination, without Angkor is not worth it. It is for the inspection of temple complexes annually Siem Reap is visited by a huge number of tourists. Thanks to Angkor city is very popular and has developed a tourist infrastructure. Well, until the moment when, in the early 19th century, French explorers have rediscovered Angkor, Siem Reap was just a simple village.
Today Siem Reap is a tourist town with many hotels, cafes and restaurants, and in addition to the temples of Angkor appeared and other attractions and entertainment. Near the city built an international airport, ready to take flights from all over the world. The city’s population is 171,800 people (as of 2009).
Beach holidays in Siem Reap is not, and sunbathing is possible except at the hotel pool.
For more information about Siem Reap, see here.
Sihanoukville (Sihanouk, The City of Sihanouk, Sihanouk City or Krong Preah Seihanu) is a town on the southern coast of Cambodia, 230 kilometers from the capital Phnom Penh. It is washed by the waters of the South China Sea.
Sihanoukville is a very small and young city. The city’s population is just over 100,000 people, and its history began in the 1950s of the last (20th) century. Sihanoukville was named after King Sihanouk, during whose reign it was built.
Sihanoukville is known among tourists as a growing beach resort with excellent clean beaches and islands. While it is still a very small, little developed tourist and unpopular resort (and, frankly, the only beach resort in Cambodia), but in the future it is predicted to become the most popular resort in Cambodia, and the bravest promise that Sihanoukville will be Cambodia’s Pattaya. Well, we’ll see.
In comparison with the same Pattaya, and indeed with any other beach resort in Southeast Asia, there are some advantages: because the resort is not particularly popular, the prices here may be the lowest in the whole of Southeast Asia (namely among the beach resorts, where prices are always higher than the non-beach), and again, because of the low popularity, even in the peak season there are not many tourists, and the beaches are mostly clean and unpopulated.
To summarize: this place is, above all, ideal for a quiet family vacation; “doing nothing” on the beaches and nearby sparsely inhabited islands; snorkeling or diving.
Phnom Penh is the capital of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the largest city of the state. The city is located in the south-central part of the country at a distance of 150 kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Siam. The city’s population is more than 2 million people.
For tourists, Phnom Penh is not such a popular holiday destination, because there is no beach and nightlife. Infrastructure for the city, which is the capital, is poorly developed, there is no public transport. Although, for tourists there is almost everything: a considerable number of hotels of different categories from cheap to expensive (there is even its own backpacker quarter), travel agencies and excursions, offices selling bus tickets to all corners of the country, restaurants and cafes. Therefore, every year the number of tourists visiting the city, even for a short time, is increasing, and the infrastructure is improving.
Tourists usually stop in Phnom Penh when they go to the popular beach resort of Sihanoukville or the Angkor Wat temple complex in Siem Reap. The stop is usually short – one or two days. Sometimes a stop in Phnom Penh is necessary because of the nature of transport: night buses in Cambodia almost do not run, so tourists are forced to stay in Phnom Penh to continue to Sihanoukville or Siem Reap the next day.
Why do they have to? If you have enough time, a day or two to explore Phnom Penh is worthwhile. And you don’t have to do it just to see the standard sights. It is interesting to linger here to learn more about life in this city, get to know the local population, walk the promenade in the evening, relax in cafes selling “happy pizza”. Also Phnom Penh is the center of nightlife in Cambodia, and a separate category of tourists linger here for exotic sex tourism. If you want to confine yourself to seeing the sights of Phnom Penh, you should not stay here more than a day, there is simply nothing to do longer.
For more tourist information about Phnom Penh, see here.
Battambang is a popular tourist city in Cambodia, famous for its ancient temples and ruins. Battambang is located in the north of the country, 170 kilometers from Siem Reap and 291 kilometers from Phnom Penh. The city is the capital of the province of the same name. Battambang is one of the largest cities in Cambodia (a population of about 250 thousand people, second largest after Phnom Penh).
Despite the low popularity and notoriety of Battambang among Russian tourists, in fact, the city has long earned popularity among foreign tourists. Although the city is the second most populous in Cambodia, the atmosphere in the city is quiet, almost rustic. The city’s architecture has changed little since colonial times, retaining its French roots. It is its genuine, natural atmosphere of provincial Cambodia city attracts tourists. It is rightly said that it is in Battambang you can see the real, not embellished for tourists provincial life of ordinary Cambodians. Of course, are no less interesting and attractions of the city and its surroundings.
Hotels in Battambang is not too much, and tourist infrastructure is underdeveloped. Of course you can find a travel agency and tourist transport, and even a tourist-oriented restaurant or cafe, but all this in a very modest amount. The only thing to do in the evening is to stay in your own hotel room and watch TV. Of course, no beach vacation is provided here. Do not go here for the whole period of your trip, it is enough to stay in town for a day or two to get acquainted with the sights and atmosphere of the city. Staying in Battambang for longer can be simply boring.
It is quite convenient to visit Battambang as part of a one- or two-day tour from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.
For more tourist information about Battambang, see here.
Ban Lung is a small town in eastern Cambodia near the border with Vietnam. Despite its size (population in 2006 was 16,000 people), this town is the capital of the Ratanakiri Province.
In this town you can not get on a plane, you can not buy a tour there (except for individual excursions). Nevertheless, the place can be very attractive for independent travelers looking for unexplored places. The city and province are known as a gemstone mining site and it is possible to take a tour of the mines for their extraction. Around the city is a dense jungle (Viratie National Park), there are several waterfalls, lakes (including the crater of an extinct volcano), mountains and villages of the hill tribes of the real Khmer. All this makes it a great place for multi-day trekking tours and ecotourism. For this you can find several travel agencies in town and use their services. Going into the jungle and mountains by yourself is not very recommended, because they say that in the jungle is still hiding guerrillas.
In the city itself there is virtually nothing to do. The tourist infrastructure is very poorly developed, but present. There are cafes and restaurants, including European cuisine, a dozen hotels (there is even a four-star) and several travel agencies. Almost every hotel can arrange an individual or group excursion to the jungle or mountains.
Getting to Banlung is not easy. There are no flights and you have to take a bus from Phnom Penh or take a cab. Due to the proximity to the border, you can get to/from the Vietnamese city of Pleiku by bus. At the border crossing between the cities it is possible to get a visa to Cambodia on arrival.
You can visit Banlung at any time of year, but during the rainy season (May to October) due to frequent downpours entire swamps form, and during the dry season (November to April) all the swamp dries up and turns into a constantly flying dust. The ideal month for a trip is November, when the mud still has time to dry and there is not much rain.
Kampot is a small town in central Cambodia, located a few kilometers from the Gulf of Thailand coast on the banks of the Kampong Bai River. The city is the capital of the province of Kampot. The city’s population is slightly more than 39 thousand people.
Among Russian mass tourists the city is virtually unknown, although it is quite a popular tourist destination. First of all, Kampot is interesting because it is located next to the Bokor National Park, which is convenient to visit from here. Also in the vicinity of the city there are many natural attractions: waterfalls, caves, rice paddies. Just a few kilometers from Kampot, on the coast, is a beach resort of Cape (Keap), and you can combine ecotourism on the outskirts of Kampot with a beach holiday.
The town itself has nothing to offer tourists anything special, but some tourists like its quiet unhurried atmosphere. The city was partly built by the colonists, the French, and has preserved much of it since then. Many buildings in Campotte have French architectural roots. Unfortunately, in the 70’s of last century, there was fierce fighting between the Khmer Rouge and the liberation forces, and many buildings and structures in the city were destroyed, most of them have not been rebuilt until now.
Nightlife and tourist entertainment is virtually non-existent, except for a few evening bars and an occasional disco in one of the hotels. But the city is just that interesting for a particular category of tourists, which allows you to plunge into the tranquil provincial life of Cambodia’s small town, enjoying the idleness. Linger for a long time in the city is not worth it, but here are a couple of days off, if, of course, the conditions of doing nothing will suit you.
The high (dry) tourist season lasts in Kampot from October to May.

Re: Вопросы о Пномпене Аня86 16 Январь, 2017 Вопрос к знатокам (уж не знала, в какой теме это разместить).r>Please tell me if you can change Vietnamese money in Cambodia? Last time we brought about $50 dongs from Vietnam, and now we don’t know what to do with them. I think a lot of people from Vietnam go to Cambodia, maybe there is an exchange office there.
Re: Вопросы о Пномпене admin 16 Январь, 2017 r>Hello Anya. It is possible to exchange dongs exactly, but about the profitability of the rate will not say. In any case, logically, the exchange rate from dong to riel should be more favorable than from dong to dollar then to riel. But on the other hand, the dollars in Cambodia are in circulation, and the local currency is not used by tourists, so may be easier to change the dongs to dollars in Vietnam, and in Cambodia to pay directly in dollars, as everyone is doing .

The local airport of international importance receives planes from many Asian countries.
Siem Reap (which means “victory over the Siams” in Khmer) is located on both banks of the river of the same name, a narrow ribbon winding through the city. Every year the city is booming as a modern resort with many good hotels, restaurants, various food kiosks, pizzerias, bars. The young resort of Sihanoukville acquired such status only in the 1990s, and before that time the city served as a convenient port, built by the French in 1955-60. Today it is the main resort of beach holidays not only Cambodians but also foreigners. Clean sandy beaches and sea, low prices attract Russian tourists who want solitude and relaxation.
Most of them are those who like to travel on their own, without vouchers. It is the possibility of cheap beach leisure, lack of crowds, local exotic – the main incentive to visit Sihanoukville (lion’s jaw). The choice of beaches, much different from each other, here is quite large. Among them there are crowded, “party”, with appropriate infrastructure, many restaurants, bars and hotels.
An example of such a beach is Serendipity, where the day and night life is boiling, selling cheap alcohol. But the flipside of it is lack of perfect cleanliness, a lot of litter (from reviews). Interesting to visit the local islands, Ream National Park, filled with exoticism.

The second largest Cambodian city after the capital, Battambang has long been a tourist mecca for lovers of Asian exotics. The architectural appearance of Battambang preserved features of French colonialism, captivating its authenticity. The atmosphere of a nice provincialism especially sympathetic to those who were fed up with urbanism of large metropolises, and enjoys plunging into the life of ordinary Cambodians.
There are not so many “cool” hotels, tourism industry is still underdeveloped compared with hyped resorts. There are no gambling, drinking and entertainment facilities. If you want to find yourself in a corner of Cambodia, almost devoid of civilization, visit Banlung – a small town (17 thousand inhabitants) in the northern province of Rattanari. It is surrounded on all sides by villages, rainforests, lakes and waterfalls. It is still accessed by a dirt road that is not completely paved. But infrastructure work has picked up with increased tourist interest in recent years.
The surrounding flora, full of exotic charm, is full of curiosities at every turn: rubber trees, oil palms, cashew nut bushes, etc. From Phnom Penh to Banlung can be reached by 8-seat plane, cab or shuttle bus. The overland route is quite long, driving almost 600 km on bad roads is not easy. But the experiences that await everyone here will pay off the road red tape. Visiting the villages of the mountain tribes of Khmer, learn about their life, crafts offers a completely different world for Europeans.

This is a popular tourist destination where people come to see the architectural and religious monuments of the past.
Here is the dead city of Bokor Hill Stash, built for the French aristocracy and abandoned after the liberation of Cambodia from colonial rule. Tours are organized to the cave temple (10 km from the city) – an amazing man-made dungeon. At 8 km from Kampot is a national park Bokor, which today paved a modern trail. One of the largest islands of Cambodia, Ko Tang (Island of Legends), indeed, has a legendary past. It is located on the border with Vietnam and for many years served as a shelter for Vietnamese smugglers. The cozy caves here were used by them to hide their goods and the Khmers dubbed Koh Tang Smugglers Island. This natural gem in the Gulf of Thailand attracts tourists with its unique natural environment and amazing scenery. Majestic rock ledges form a necklace along the coast, forming grottoes and caves.

Prince was repeatedly bombed and burned with napalm by the Americans. The memory of those terrible times still lives on here, but that doesn’t stop the picturesque islands from being a popular tourist destination. On the largest of the islands is a village of fishermen and sandy beaches.
On the other island, Ko Moan, the beaches are rocky and surrounded by trees. The 3rd island is completely rocky, it is called naked. All are considered the best places in Cambodia for diving and fishing. The water around is so clear that you can see everything at a depth of 20 meters. In the dive sites at the bottom there are boulders covered with hard and soft corals. There is a huge variety of marine life: several species of sharks, a variety of fish, moray eels, cuttlefish and mollusks. Diving in the anemone garden is especially fascinating with its multitude of sea creatures.
Located 60 kilometers from the Cambodian mainland the island became world famous because of the scandal connected with the Russian businessman Sergey Polonsky. His plans to build a respectable resort on Damlong were prevented by his arrest and deportation to Russia. This natural artifact has only recently become a tourist pilgrimage destination, so everything here is preserved in its original form. Pristine jungle with relict trees, the clearest sea, huge boulders on the shores, exotic fauna create a fantastic picture.
But the civilization has already left its traces on the mysterious piece of land. It built a comfortable air-conditioned bungalows, open restaurant with a bar and 3 meals a day. There are small cheap cabins, located right in the jungle. Usually come here for 2-3 days to swim in the blue waves, sunbathing, strolling around the island. Snorkeling allows you to see the unique marine life, which is not found elsewhere.
