The Burj Khalifa Skyscraper – general information

The Burj Khalifa is the heart of Dubai’s business center, with numerous apartments and offices, a hotel and gyms with swimming pools, and three observation decks concentrated inside.

Architect

The Burj Khalifa Tower was designed by the well-known American company Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and its main creator was architect Adrian Smith. He already had experience in designing China’s Jin Mao skyscraper.

How much construction

Construction of the Burj Khalifa skyscraper began in 2004 and ended in 2010 – it took about 6 years. Every week 1-2 floors were erected, which is an unprecedented speed in such hot climatic conditions. And every day at least 12,000 workers were involved, mostly from South Asia.

Cost of construction

The construction of the Burj Khalifa tower cost the UAE government 1.5 billion dollars.

History of the construction of the Burj Khalifa

Striving for perfection in absolutely everything Arab sheikhs decided to build a new structure, which would surpass any building in the world both in its height and uniqueness. Built in 2010, the skyscraper was originally named Burj Dubai, which means “Dubai Tower” in Arabic. However, when it opened, it was renamed after UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Accordingly, the translation “Burj Khalifa” means “Khalifa Tower”.

The building has the asymmetric form, that allows it to remain stable under strong gusts of wind at heights over 600 meters. The construction department of the Korean company Samsung, which won a major tender, was entrusted with the implementation of this elaborate architectural project.

During the construction of the Burj Khalifa, the climatic and geological features of the city were taken into account; in particular, a new grade of concrete was even created that could be used at extremely high temperatures. Moreover, the mortar was mixed only at night and with the addition of ice – otherwise the concrete would not have received the proper quality and strength. The grand opening of the Burj Khalifa Tower took place on January 4, 2010. Contrary to the expectations of the authorities, all the commercial space was bought for the offices of international companies even before that.

Many tourists wonder what time it is better to visit this skyscraper. It is beautiful at any time of day, but the most beautiful panorama from its windows opens at sunset.

At GetYourGuide, you can choose a ticket with the option to visit the Burj Khalifa at sunset to witness this stunning sight.

Architectural features of the building

The Burj Khalifa skyscraper is a unique architectural design. The plan of the building is unparalleled in the entire world.

Height and number of floors

The height of the tower is a record 828 meters, which accommodates 163 floors. The height of the spire of the building is more than 180 meters, and it is made of reinforced concrete construction.

Burj Khalifa is equipped with 57 safe and high-speed elevators.

According to official sources, the speed of each elevator is 10 m/s, but the real data show even more impressive results – 18 m/s. This means that the ascent to the observation deck on the 148th floor (555 meters) will take only a minute.

The elevators accommodate 14 adult passengers and are equipped with an emergency system. As they ascend to the observation deck, it gets dark all around, with lights running along the walls and Arabic music playing. Only one service elevator rises from the ground floor to the top floor of the structure.

Heat Resistance

The facade of the building is finished with heat-reflecting glass panels which reduces the building’s heating and makes it possible to reduce the cost of air conditioning. A special air conditioning system developed by Chinese experts is used to maintain a comfortable temperature inside. The surface area of all windows is 12000 square meters.

Energy consumption

To provide the skyscraper with the necessary amount of electricity, a separate power station was created. The approximate amount of energy consumed is almost the same as that consumed by 360 thousand light bulbs of 100 watts.

Water collection system

The Burj Khalifa Tower has a special system for collecting rain water, which allows to use it for domestic and household needs. This saves up to 40 million liters of water annually, which is important for a region which is constantly suffering from a lack of water.

The internal layout

The structure of the skyscraper is designed in the form of a three-pointed star going upwards. The 30 technical floors are evenly distributed throughout the height of the building. The central core of the Burj Khalifa tower provides its horizontal stability, while the concrete inner walls act as a spider web, making the structure resistant to wind and dynamic loads. Thanks to this the amplitude of vibrations is practically reduced to zero.

The foundation is supported by 200 piles 45 meters long. The width of the foundation (piles) is 1.5 meters. The depth of the foundation is more than 10 meters.

  • 30 floors – hotels (green and blue on the diagram);
  • 30 floors – technical facilities (gray);
  • 36 floors – offices of large companies (pink);
  • 53 floors – apartments and flats (orange and yellow).

Apartments in Burj Khalifa cost from $1 million and up. The remaining 14 floors are equipped with restaurants, bars, fitness centers with swimming pools and even a mosque. There is no aquarium at the Burj Khalifa, but the nearby Dubai Mall has one.

Burj Khalifa attraction – The Singing Fountain

Musical fountains are the “highlight” of the financial center, which includes the Burj Khalifa Tower. Every day from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at intervals of every 30 minutes a fantastic spectacle is created: water jets rising up to 150 meters high with the help of water cannons.

All this is accompanied by light and sound animations, as well as melodies of Arabic and foreign performers. These include well-known compositions:

  • “Sama Dubai.”
  • “I Will Always Love You.”
  • “Thriller”,
  • “Mon Amour”,
  • “Con te Partirò.”

From any of the viewing platforms this spectacle is even more beautiful, because in this case you can see the singing fountains from above and not from below.

All visitors of the Burj Khalifa can enjoy the show of fountains free of charge in the evening and at night. On holidays there are fireworks and a real light show when the tower is painted in different colors, for example, the flag of Russia or France. The schedule of the laser show is available on the official website of the structure.

Observation decks

Observation decks are located on floors 124, 125 and 148. The height of the upper observation deck is 555 meters and the lower two are 452 to 456 meters: at no other point have tourists ever climbed so high. Climbing to the lower platforms takes about a minute, and to the top – a little over a minute. From each of them the visitor has a 360 ° view of the surrounding area: the business center with an artificial lake, man-made Palm Jumeirah Island, the Persian Gulf and private cottages.

By the way, on the viewports that are located on the 124th and 125th floors, there are “wings” – colored images of angels on glass by the American artist Colette Miller.

Viewing platforms on the Burj Khalifa are equipped with stationary binoculars and interactive screens to show the area. The greatest flow of people is observed on weekends and holidays. Buying tickets in advance on the handy Russian-language GetYourGuide website will not only help you avoid lines at the entrance, but also save on early reservations.

Located on the 122nd floor of Burj Khalifa tower the restaurant At.mosphere has made the Guinness Book of Records, of course, due to its location at such a height. Reviews

According to numerous reviews of tourists, Burj Khalifa is a place that every traveler should visit: the view from it is really fantastic. Service is organized at the highest level – attentive guides, responsive staff, interesting presentations. When you visit the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, you feel welcome and also feel the luxury of Arab life.

Conclusion

The Burj Khalifa is probably the main attraction in Dubai. Despite the relatively high price of the entrance ticket, it is necessary to visit it: the sight from a height of almost one kilometer and just a point “I’ve been to the tallest building in the world” – is worth it.

Buildings taller than this are currently under construction in Saudi Arabia and in Dubai itself – another reason to visit the Burj Khalifa skyscraper before it loses its lead.
