Lake Teletskoe

Teletskoe lake

Teletskoe Lake, located among the mountains in Altai, is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations and is included in the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage Site. The water body is also part of a specially protected natural area called the Golden Mountains of Altai.

The size of the reservoir is impressive: its width varies from 2.9 to 5.2 kilometers and its length is 77.8 kilometers. This is not the most surprising: the Teletskoe Lake is considered one of the deepest in Russia. The average depth of the reservoir is 174 meters, and the maximum is 325 meters.

Recreation on the Teletskoye Lake in the Altai

Teletskoye Lake is located in one of the most picturesque places in Russia. You can stay at the recreation bases, as well as come to the shore in a motor home or with a tent.

On the shore (closer to the bases and settlements), of course, the infrastructure is more developed: there are equipped recreation areas, sports fields, sports equipment and boat rentals.

Also, tourists who stay in guest houses and recreation centers, will be offered bicycle or horseback riding tours on the Teletskoye Lake, and for fans of extreme sports – rafting on it. In addition to excursions on the shore and on the body of water itself you can visit local attractions or go on a guided tour of the Altai Mountains.

It is worth saying at once that the tours around the Teletskoye Lake and the local attractions, depending on the distance and duration, cost from 1000 to 3000 rubles.

Important information for vacationers: tourists are charged a resort fee. In 2018 it is 30 rubles per day, and in 2019 – 50 rubles per day. However, this fee is not applied to disabled people of I and II groups, low-income families (the privilege must be proved by certificate of income) and local residents.

Recreation bases on the Teletskoye Lake

Every year, Lake Teletskoye attracts thousands of tourists. There are several camping sites, guest houses and camping sites on the shores of the lake.

For example, at the “Golden Lake” base the guests are offered to rent summer houses, cottages and hotel rooms. At the base there is a cafe, two bathhouses, sports equipment rental, sports and children’s playgrounds, a pier, a boat rental, horseback riding or guided tours to the most scenic spots of the large Lake Teletskoye.

You can also stay at the recreation center “Altyn-Kel”. You will be offered apartments in cottages with fully equipped kitchens where you can prepare your own meals. You can also visit the sauna, the game room (billiards), you can rent a barbeque and rent sporting goods.

Fishing on the Teletskoye Lake

For fans of fishing the Teletskoe lake has become one of the favorite places: the water is fresh, clean and transparent. There are 18 species of fish in the lake. The most popular of them are pike, perch, bream, burbot, whitefish and others.

Fishing is allowed outside the spawning season. You can fish from the shore as well as by boat. You should note that the shores of the lake are steep and rocky. A boat can be rented at the recreation centers or from local residents.

Tourists assure that the catch here is always good, as the lake is flowing and rich in fish.

Features

Lake Teletskoye is located in the Turochak and Ulagan regions of Altai, surrounded by mountains. The shores of the lake are steep and riddled with many bays, from which the lake only benefits – if you float on the water surface by boat or a boat, the view is incredible.

On the northern shore of the lake you may find the Torot mountain range, the village of Artybash, the villages of Yailyu and Iogach, and Kamga Bay and cordon off the main tourist attractions. To the south are the Chulyshman Uplands, to the east are the Korbu and Abakansky ridges and the cordons of Bele, Kokshi and Chelyush, as well as the Kishte and Korbu waterfalls. In the west are the Altyntu, Iolgo, and Sumultinskiy ranges. By the way, the right bank of the Teletskoye Lake, where the main natural attractions are located, is part of the Altai State Nature Reserve.

Due to its scale 70 rivers flow into the lake, and the Chulyshman River is the main feeder of the lake. It flows into the lake from the south. In the north the Biya river flows out of the lake. There are also two large bays, Kiginsky and Kamginsky. On the shores of the lake grow larch, pine, cedar, and fir trees.

The origin of the name of Teletskoye Lake is also interesting. About 400 years ago the tribes of Telesy lived on the shore of the lake. They gave their name to the lake. However, there is another name – Altyn-Kol (which means “golden lake”), and this name is associated with a legend.

Teletskoe lake

The legend

Many years ago there was a great famine in the area. A man kept a large bar of gold, he decided to exchange it for food to feed his family. No one at home could help him, as no one even had tortillas.

Then the man, desperate, threw the useless bar of gold into the lake and jumped off the cliff himself. The locals believe that somewhere deep at the bottom of the lake there is still this huge ingot.

Attractions

The Altai Territory is one of the most beautiful places in Russia, so it’s no surprise that there are several sights on the shores of Lake Teletskoye that must be visited during a trip there.

Waterfalls

The waterfall Korbu is one of the main attractions of Lake Teletskoye. The waterfall is part of the Bolshaya Korbu River, which flows into the water body. The height of the waterfall is about 12 meters. After heavy rains or melting snow in the spring, the waterfall is an incredible sight – gurgling streams of water fall from the rock at great speed and force.

There is another waterfall Kishte, which is often visited by tourists. Its height is 12.5 meters. It is located on the eastern shore of Lake Teletskoye and is part of the Altai Reserve.

Teletskoe lake

Stone Bay

It is located 3 kilometers from Artybash village. It was formed several hundred years ago. Huge rocks cover the shore and the bottom of the lake. The bay itself is small, but very picturesque: clear turquoise water, huge boulders and incredible beauty of the shore – the forest and mountains. People usually get to the Stone Bay by boat, because it is difficult to pass there by land because of the huge rocks.

Teletskoe lake

Poklonnaya Pine

Poklonnaya pine (sometimes called “drunken pine”) has become a symbol of Yailu village, located in the north of the Teletskoye Lake. No one knows the exact age of this unique tree. Travellers have described this pine in their travel notes from the last century. The uniqueness of the pine is that many years ago, during a storm, its trunk was almost pressed to the shore. However, the tree did not die. The pine is still in this position: mighty roots hold the fallen trunk, and the branches are in contact with the water of the lake.

Weather and water temperature

The climate of the valley where Lake Teletskoye is located is continental. The weather here is unpredictable and changes frequently.

At the same time, the temperature of the air and water in the northern and southern parts of the lake is different. In the south, the average annual temperature is higher than in the north. As for precipitation, it is abundant at any time of year. The weather can change sharply from sunny and warm, to windy and cool, the lake is also subject to strong storms – then the height of waves can reach several meters.

The water in the lake usually warms up in July. But in different parts of the body of water it is different in temperature. So in the north, the water is cold even in summer and does not get warmer than +10 ° C, and in the south keeps at a comfortable +20 ° C (but only near the shore and a few meters from it).
