Weekends in Plyos: Levitan landscapes, fish corners and bell tolling

The ancient town of Plyos, with its beautiful name, is located 400 kilometers northeast of Moscow. In 1888, the painter Isaac Levitan, traveling along the Volga, saw a settlement on the hills, stayed there for three years – and wrote more than 200 landscapes here. When Chekhov saw them he said to his friend, “You know, a smile appeared in your paintings.

Plyos left me and my husband with exactly the same feeling – we still smile when we remember the city. Were here more than once, and I’m sure we will come back to stroll through the streets with pre-revolutionary buildings, to take a boat ride on the Volga, try kuleiki and fish corners, a break from the bustle of the big city and catch inspiration, which in Plyos in abundance.

What to see in Plyos: attractions and places of interest

Since Levitan’s time, the appearance of the city has changed little. It is still picturesquely scattered on the hills and reflected in the Volga. The streets are full of stylized merchants’ shops. Small colorful houses boast their wooden carvings, boats lie lazily by the shore, and cobblestone paths curl underfoot.

Get lost in Plyos is impossible: at every step tourist maps showing “what and where.

The density of attractions for the city with a population of about 1800 people is impressive. The most interesting I have marked on the map – you can build your route. Start it from the parking lot, I marked it on the map number 1.

Merchant’s shops and antique signs.

We are on Market Square in front of Resurrection Cathedral, close by are the noisy Flour Rows and Kalashnaya Street. The venues are styled like the old times, with signs with “yer” and “yat” on all sides. Yer is the old name of the hard sign (ъ). Yat is written as a soft sign with a rung (ъ).

That said, Plyos has no legacy of Soviet architecture, so everything looks like a teleport to pre-revolutionary Russia.

Resurrection Cathedral and view of the Volga

Behind the Resurrection Cathedral (1817) is a viewing platform overlooking the Volga, and next door is a wooden chapel of the Archistratigus Michael (1825), which was moved from the village of Antonovo, Privolzhsky District, Ivanovo Region.

Corner of the USSR

On Lenin street, a stone’s throw from Resurrection cathedral, a strange house number 5 suddenly appeared out of the general picture. Above the fence is an inscription “Our Homeland – USSR. 1922-1991”, portraits of Lenin, Stalin, scraps of slogans, portraits of Politburo members are everywhere, and in the windows of the lower floor – portraits of marshals from the Great Patriotic War. The owner of the house was an ideological communist, as is evident from the homemade plaque.

Boring sculptures

The cat Mukha sits on the crossing of Sovetskaya St. and Ostrovskogo St. Her prototype is Plyoss artist Vitaly Panchenko’s favorite cat, named Fly.

On the descent from the Market Square – a monument to Fyodor Chaliapin. The singer had a dacha in this area – 5 kilometers from Plyos downstream of the Volga

According to one urban legend, Chaliapin, disembarking from the steamer in Plyos, walked leisurely through the market square, bought five pounds of sunflower seeds and, peeling them, looked around with a smile. “Chaliapin!” – was heard in the crowd. “So he’s polishing his throat with sunflower seeds,” someone said jokingly. “Come on, fool’s field,” interrupted another voice. – “You polish your throat with a different kind of polish. A clinking of the throat followed. Word of Chaliapin’s arrival swept through the town, and the singer was already being followed by a huge crowd. Asked, of course, to sing, but he, smiling, refused, and still throwing seeds in his mouth, joked: “My throat is not polished. (Source – D. B. Oinas. “Chaliapin F. I. in Plyos. Legends and Facts”).

Next to the figure of a little girl and a dog, the composition is called “Olya and Gudok”. These are real characters. Olya – daughter of merchant Chernev, her father traded in butcher shops on the site of the current tavern “Krutoyar”, and the dog’s name was Gudok

Quay and Levitan house-museum

We walk along Sovetskaya street, which turns into Lunacharskogo street. This is a local embankment. Here you can still see the historic buildings, stone and half-stone merchant mansions: the house of merchants Smirnovy, house merchant Maklakshin, Bakakin-Vekshin, Podgornovy manor. They are now apartments, hotels, museums, workshops of artists.

There are four state museums on the embankment: the house-museum of Isaac Levitan (Lunacharskogo street, 4), Levitan Cultural Center (Lunacharskogo street, 6), Museum of Landscape (Lunacharskogo street, 20) and an exhibition of arts and crafts of Ivanovo area (Sovetskaya street, 41).

House-museum of Isaac Levitan. Here you will see “Crimean landscape”, “Volga”, “Plyos”, “Sunset on the Volga” and other famous paintings of the artist, paintings of his beloved Sofia Kuvshinnikova, their personal belongings, interactive stands with biographical information

Levitan is immortalized twice in Plyos. One of the monuments stands next to the house where the artist rented a room on the second floor from 1888 to 1890, and where now a museum in his honor.

At the end of the embankment near the museum of landscape stands the sculpture “Dachnitsa”. This is the artist Sofia Kuvshinnikova, Levitan’s lover, with whom he traveled on the Volga

Sobornaya Mountain, where the ancient fortress used to stand

Locals have decided not to be trifling, and all the hills of the city are called mountains. There are comfortable routes with stairs leading to three of them (Voskresenskaya – People’s Tchik, Sobornaya and Levitan’s Hill). I recommend climbing each of them, as they offer stunning views of the Volga and the city.

The path to Sobornaya Gora squeezes between the Art Nouveau house and the house with mezzanine: they are marked as such on all maps of Plyos.

With Sobornaya Mountain began the history of Plyos, it is one of the highest points on the Upper Volga, and besides the steep banks are cut so ravines, that even around the fortress dig artificial trenches were not needed. This is where the city was founded in 1410 to protect the borders of Russia from attacks from the east.

The wooden log fortress on the hill was erected on the order of Moscow Prince Vasily, son of Dmitry Donskoy. After one dashing raid Plyoso (as the town was called before) was hastily restored, but the fortress was no longer of such good quality, so by the XVII century it rotted away. Restoration was not started.

On Sobornaya Mountain is one of the oldest monuments in Plyos: the only monument in Russia to Moscow Prince Vasily I, son of Dmitry Donskoy. Address: Yurievskaya street, 4.

Nearby is the museum and exhibition complex “Prestvennye Mesto” with the exhibition “Ancient Plyos and the Ivanovo Land” and the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – the oldest preserved building of the city (1699). Museum and exhibition complex working hours, prices and exhibitions can be viewed at the official site.

Nikolskaya Street: colorful houses, carved platbands

I gathered a splendid photo collection of platbands in Plyos. If you’re a connoisseur like me, the quest begins on Nikolskaya Street and continues on Varvarinskaya and Kirovska Streets.

In Plyos, by the way, a project called “Hidden Russia” is being implemented, which aims to preserve the historical heritage. Therefore, more and more beautiful restored houses appear in the streets.

In many restored houses in Plyos you can stay. In this merchant’s mansion of the XIX century on Kirov Street, 8, for example, is a boutique hotel.

Also in Nikolskaya Street, there are two interesting genre sculptures. A bronze city councilor stands at the intersection of Kirov Street and Kropotkin Alley. Keeps order! Not far from here, near the Provincial Art Gallery-M (Nikolskaya St., 20), the bronze landscape artist Vyacheslav Fedorov, a native of the Ivanovo Region, takes his inspiration.

Levitan’s Mountain

In the past, the mountain was called Petropavlovskaya: the church of Peter and Paul (1561) stood on it. The church enchanted Levitan and became part of his masterpieces, among them “Above Eternal Rest.” Type into the navigator the address “8 Kirov St.” and you will come to the stairs leading up the mountain.

Unfortunately, the temple “from the picture” burned down in 1903. Legendary landscape was replenished in 1982, bringing from the village Bilyukovo Ivanovo region replacement – Resurrection Church (1699). Another 30 years later a bronze Levitan with an easel was installed on the mountain.

The pogost on the Peter and Paul Hill has existed since at least the 16th century. All the crosses on the mountain are historical reconstruction

Churches and domes

There are many churches in Plyos, but it was Varvarinsky that drew us to it. It was constantly climbing into the frame – then from the Sobornaya Hill, then from the embankment, then from Mount Levitan. No wonder the great painter painted it more than once.

We were lucky, we were on Easter and everyone was allowed to ring the bells.

Boat trip

In Plyos, the Volga appears as that great Russian river – with high, beautifully outlined wooded banks, with houses and lighthouse churches scattered along them.

Quay with pleasure boats (pier “Dana”) and cashier’s office is easy to find: you need to go down to the Volga from the Market Square, where the Church of the Resurrection stands. They depart every hour from 10:00 until sunset. We caught the last boat! Just to see Plyos in the setting sun. Price – 400 ₽ per person.

The ride on the Volga is accompanied by an audio tour. There are no plaids on the boats, so dress warmer.

The walk takes about an hour. You’ll see Plyos, the place where Levitan and Kuvshinkina dated, former president Medvedev’s dacha, a gas station on the water, and other interesting objects from the water.

Old Slavonic word “Plyos” used to mean “lake”, and then another meaning settled: “the stretch of river from turn to turn”.

What to see near Plyos

The eco-village “Znatnaya sidedka” is located in the village of Vygolovo, 5 kilometers from Plyos. The opportunity to live in a real rustic hut, enjoy the taste of bread from the Russian oven with fresh milk, ride horses, lead round dances and learn Russian romances, pick mushrooms, berries, meet the inhabitants of the poultry yard and mini-farm. All details are on the official site. At different times this eco-village was visited by Emir Kusturica, Rafe Fiennes, Slava Polunin, Pavel Lungin. A worthwhile place!

Where to eat in Plyos

The gastronomic brand of Plyos is fish corners. These are open triangular-shaped pies filled with fish, smoked on alder wood chips. They are said to be traditional: such pies have been baked since the time of Ivan the Terrible. You can taste them in a place with the same name.

This place occupies the eastern corner of the former Plesski Muchny Ryadov building, built in the 1840s. The menu includes not only corners with smoked bream, but also ear in glasses and also ginger-rubber tea. The average check is ₽400.

Historic mansion on the waterfront, bright photogenic interior in pink and mint tones. They know the recipe for Isaac Levitan’s favorite cookies, and also offer to try kuleika, cherry cake, Plyossky gingerbread “Rybuli-Glazuli”, village creamy sugar, liver pie “Krymov”, Ethiopian coffee, Bashkir tea, cocktails kir and Rossini in Plyossky. Great coffee to go. The average bill is 650 ₽.

Beer has been brewed in Plyoss since the 18th century, and the Plyoss beer house belonged to a local merchant Fyodor Averin who was a friend of an Austrian who knew a lot about beer and left secret recipes. The place is topped with burrata, a hunter’s pan and a taster’s set (a set of five local beers). The average check is 750 ₽.

European, Russian cuisine, there is a special vegan menu. Abundant author’s tinctures. One of the rooms has a fireplace, the other has panoramic windows overlooking the Volga. I advise to try the risotto with ceps, picked in the Ivanovo region, fish okroshka “Schuchina” with kvass, served with the Volga pike-perch, homemade rhubarb pie. It’s better to reserve a table in advance by phone +7 (996) 517-06-08. Average bill – 3000 ₽.

In Tula – gingerbread, in Tver – fire cutlets, in Yakutsk – stroganina, in Vladikavkaz – Ossetian pies. And in Plyos – fish corners!

When to go to Plyos

Plyos is good in any season. The average temperature in winter is -8 ° C, in summer it is +22 ° C. If you want to see the city in bloom and catch a pilgrimage of artists – come in May, if you are interested in Plyos in the gold – in September and October, want to swim in the Volga – in July. Water temperature in summer +19 ° C, I recommend the beach near the sanatorium “Actor-Plyos”: clean sand, comfortable descent, the current is not felt, there are water attractions for children.

For fans of active winter holidays next door to Plyos there is a small ski resort “Milovka”. Pass for a day for 30 climbs on weekdays – 600 ₽, on weekends – 1500 ₽, there is a tubing track (600 ₽ / hour).

Be sure to keep an eye on the city poster: there are always plein airs, film festivals, classical music festivals and themed holidays in Plyos. Popular are “Plyos on the Volga. Linen Palette, “Dacha Festival named after Chaliapin and Plyoss animation festival. These days in the city more people than usual.

How to get to Plyos

The distance from Moscow to Plyos is 400 kilometers. On personal transport I recommend a route: the exit by the Gorky highway through Vladimir, Suzdal and Ivanovo. All three cities belong to the Golden Ring of Russia, so it is beautiful and you can make stops there.

In Plyos are not allowed to drive one-day tourists’ cars. Entry into the city is allowed only for locals or on special passes, the rest park a couple of kilometers from the historic center. There are lots of places, parking is free as well as a shuttle from the parking to the Market Square.

If you use public transport, get on “Lastochka” (swift train) from Kursk railway station. Train runs four times a day, 3 hours 40 minutes, 894 ₽, then take a bus to Plyos (runs from bus station, 1.5 hours, 230 ₽).

How to get around the city

Bicycles: rent an apartment in Plyos (Sovetskaya St., 19), Grand Sova (Varvarinskaya St., 18), Voskresenskaya Dacha (Lenina St., 20).

By electric scooter – rent at 35, Kornilova St.

On foot. Do not forget that Plyos is on seven hills, there are stairs everywhere, so scooters and bikes are a great option only for the promenade. Further and higher – still on foot.

Where to stay in Plyos

Plyos is a small town, so the choice of accommodation depends only on your budget. You can choose from luxurious apartments with the view on the river Volga (house BakakinaVekshina from 3500 ₽/day), wooden refurbished mansions (boutique-hotel Sophie from 16 500 ₽/day), hotels with spa and sauna like Grand Sova (from 8400 ₽/day).

It’s better to book six months in advance, so there’s more choice. In case your trip to Plyos is pure improvisation (decided today let’s go tomorrow), and there are no decent places for a decent price, you can consider nearby towns: Privolzhsk, Krasnoe-on-the Volga, Dudkino. We once settled in Privolzhsk (just 18 kilometers from Plyos), it is convenient if you have a personal car.

Many historians consider the Cathedral of the Assumption one of the oldest churches in the entire Ivanovo region. Once upon a time there was a wooden church, but it was destroyed by a fire. According to scientists, the modern structure is an exact copy of the first building.

The architecture of the object is quite simple, and therein lies its special charm. Local priests believed that the rich architecture of the capital was fussy and garish, so it was unacceptable for the church. Milaya Gora – modern ski resort

Sweet mountain

Milaya Gora.

Plyos is known as a cozy, quiet place, ideal for recreation. All ski lovers come here in winter to ski from the comfortable, equipped slopes of Milaya Gora (Milovka).

There are a total of 7 slopes of various complexity on the mountain. Beginners will find gentle slopes, whereas skilled skiers will find steep slopes. Many extreme skiers choose track #6: it’s located on the edge of a forest, which makes skiing both exciting and very picturesque (the view from here is really breathtaking).

Training track #3 is considered a children’s track: the youngest guests ride here. You can climb to the top on one of the rope tow elevators, and the prices are quite affordable. You can go skiing not only during the day but also in the dark (the tracks are illuminated by powerful floodlights). During the breaks you can have a rest in a cafe or roast a barbeque in a specially allocated area.

Address: Milaya Gora, Kalinina street, Ivanovskaya oblast, Russia.

Located on the right bank of the Volga, Plyos has always played an important role in the life of the country. Initially, the fortress protected the borders of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality. Then came the period, when Plyoss developed as a major port town. Here flax was grown and yarn was produced. Handicrafts were well developed in the town.

For guests Plyos is equally good in winter and summer. In the cold season tourists can go sledging from high, gentle slopes, go skiing on landscaped, comfortable slopes. In summer the highlight of vacation is fishing.

Plesa has a special flavor: even centuries later, the amazing atmosphere of antiquity is preserved here. In combination with modern shopping centers and entertainment complexes, you get a unique ensemble, which is so attractive to visitors from all parts of Russia.
