Dantovo Gorge

Dantovo Gorge

Dantovo Gorge.

One of the main attractions of Goryachi Klyuch – Dantovo Gorge – the result of “cooperation” of man and nature. In the 1870s to provide natural ventilation of the swampy surroundings resort Cossacks cut a huge gap in the sandstone rock. Nature skillfully completed the work begun by man, having deepened and expanded the gorge and covered the rocky walls with velvet moss.

Everyone who has been here at least once talks about Dant’s Gorge as an unusually beautiful and charming place with a special romantic atmosphere. The name of the author of the famous “Divine Comedy” is not accidental. According to the officers, who were treated in Goryachy Klyuch at the end of the XIX century, this gloomy, but at the same time and fascinating gorge strongly reminds Dante’s entrance to the Abyss.

Today the Dantovo Gorge is one of the most visited places in Goryachy Klyuch. It is especially picturesque in the early dawn hours, when, according to legend, the Mistress of the Gorge herself washes herself in the local stream.

Alexander Spring.

Outwardly, the Alexander Spring at the foot of the Klyuchevaya (Abadzehskaya) Mountain on the right bank of the Psekups River is nothing special, but its importance for the resort town is unparalleled. Healing properties of the mineral water of the spring have been well known to local residents for hundreds of years. And with the lighting of this very source in 1864, began the history of the resort. In fact, Aleksandrovsky can be considered the ancestor of Gorny Klyuch.

Adov Waterfall

Hell's waterfall

Adov Waterfall.

Powerful stream falls from a height of twelve meters, crashing noisily at the bottom of a deep stone bowl. This fantastically beautiful place like a magnet attracts tourists.

Of course, many people come here, drawn primarily by the name of the waterfall, the origin of which is unknown – looking at this cascade, it is difficult to say what he who invented the name saw a connection with the kingdom of the dead, after all around only a flourishing nature, full of life.

You can reach Adova Falls on your own, but it’s better to go here as part of an organized tour or at least find an experienced guide. He will help you to plan a route that will allow you to see other protected areas at the same time.

Chapel of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God

Chapel of the Iberian Icon of the Mother of God.

At the entrance to Dantovo Gorge, at Mineralnaya Polyana, there is a cute little chapel dedicated to the Iberian icon of the Mother of God. Its history dates back to the second half of the 19th century, when the development of the resort was accompanied by the consecration of healing springs. At that time, this place also had a spring, called Iberian, and it is near him and erected a chapel.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of XX century as a result of shifting layers of the Earth’s crust, the source dried up. The path to the famous chapel began to gradually overgrow. It would have been forgotten about if in our time the city authorities decided to ennoble Mineralnaya Polyana and not to restore the old shrine.

Today the Iverskie chapel has once again become a place of pilgrimage for the suffering people. It attracts not only orthodox people: this construction is so graceful and beautiful that everybody admires it with great pleasure, regardless of religion.

Lantern Mountain

Lantern Mountain

Lantern Mountain.

There are several versions of the origin of such an unusual name of the mountain of 277 meters high, which is located on the banks of the river Psekups, near the village Fanagorishke.

According to one of them “lantern” is a simplification of the word “fanagoria,” a transformation of the name of the place into something simpler and more familiar to the Russian ear. (By the way, the settlement was apparently named Fanagoria by the settlers from Taman, where at one time Suvorov founded the Fanagoria fortress).

According to another version, this name of the mountain is due to the fact that during the Caucasian War there was a military post and a signal lantern, designed to alert other posts of attacks by mountaineers.

Lantern is not the most popular place in these parts. Nevertheless, it is worth ascending the hill, if only for the sake of paying tribute to the soldiers who heroically fought at this place during the Caucasian War and the Great Patriotic War. From the top of the mountain you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Psekups River valley and the Greater Caucasus Range.

Address: Mount Lantern, Krasnodar Krai, Russia.

Maltsev Waterfalls

Maltsev waterfalls

Maltsev waterfalls.

At 5 km from the city, on the northern slopes of the ridge Kokht, are Maltsev waterfalls, often called the Devil’s Mouth. In fact, this is one four-cascade waterfall with a total height difference of about 23 meters (the height of the last, most spectacular part is 7-8 meters).

Effectively look a waterfall on Maltsev brook only in the spring, during the abundant snow melting. In summer, however, you will find only a thin thread of water flowing down the sandstone (the locals say that not so long ago the stream was much more full-flowing and you could even catch fish in it).

The road to Maltseviye waterfalls from Goryachi Klyuch takes no more than 1.5-2 hours. This is an easy route, passing through picturesque places, and therefore, this walk will give you great pleasure.

Mirror Rock

Mirror Rock

The Rock of the Mirror.

In the valley of Maltsev Creek you will find another interesting natural object – a 32-meter Mirror Rock. This rock, made of yellow quartz-glauconite sandstone, has been forming for tens of millions of years, as evidenced by the imprints of prehistoric mollusks, clearly visible in a slice of rock.

The natural rock patterns are intricately shaped and somewhat reminiscent of the lines on a human palm. Maybe that’s why there is a legend that if you look closely at these patterns, you can see your future. Modern tourists do not believe in legends, but, nevertheless, everyone who happened to be here carefully scrutinizes the picture, formed by cracks, trying to see a meaningful image.

Because of its rather high and, most importantly, smooth surface, which gave the rock such an unusual name, the Mirror serves as an attractive place for climbers.

Address: Mirror Rock, Krasnodar region, Russia.

Lysaya mountain

Lysaya mountain

Mount Lysaya.

Mount Lysaya, located almost opposite to the famous Abadzehskaya Uplands, is one of the most conspicuous mountains in the vicinity of Goryachoy Klyuch. This densely wooded peak height of about 420 meters gives a special flavor to the resort town.

Due to its location Lysaya, the approaches to the top of which from three sides are almost impossible, during the Great Patriotic War, was an important strategic target. The possession of this height gave a huge advantage over the enemy. It is not surprising that fierce battles were fought for Lysaya, occasionally turning into close-quarter fights. In memory of those events at the top of the mountain is a monument to the soldiers who fought at this height.
