16 beautiful places to visit in Dominica

The population of Dominica is about 73 thousand people. Most of the local population are distant descendants of Africans. But the Caribbean Indians, who originally lived on the land are only less than three percent. White people of European descent, on the other hand, are small, less than one percent.

It is worth noting that most of the population, about 70 percent, lives in cities. Although agriculture plays a major role in the country’s economy. The capital of the state is the city of Roseau, which does not look like a metropolis. But it is the largest on the island. Its population is only 18 thousand people. English is considered the official language, but in the villages people usually speak Patois. Such a dialect once appeared due to the influence of the French language.

How to get there

Getting to Dominica is not that easy from Russia, there are no direct flights to the island, no package deals like to Dominican Republic. Therefore, be prepared to get here through another country, or even two! By the way, this is an advantage – you can see a couple of countries in one vacation.

In our case, we did. We had plane tickets to Guadeloupe (direct flights from Europe to Guadeloupe) and we stayed there for a week, then we decided to go to Dominica by ferry. The ferry runs between Guadeloupe and Martinique with a swim to Dominica, which is just about in the middle, which takes about 2 hours.

The capital of Dominica, Roseau.

A one-way ticket costs about 35-40 euros and can be purchased online. Ferries are regular and seats are usually available, though it’s better to book in advance.

You can also get to Dominica by plane from the nearby islands. From Martinique or Guadeloupe it takes about 30 minutes, from Barbados or Antigua and Barbuda, for example, longer.

Note that often when you search for tickets from Russia to the Caribbean islands, it is suggested to fly via New York with a connection. So you need a transit visa for America, even if you’re not going to leave the airport.

So this is not the most convenient option.

The mountainous landscape of the island.

TOTAL: As practice has shown, it is not wise to fly only to Dominica, and it is better to combine a visit to some neighboring island country with a more developed infrastructure, which is easy to get to.

  • Firstly, it is much easier and cheaper to fly to.
  • Secondly, you will see a completely different country, and the islands in the Caribbean are very different from each other.
  • Thirdly, it is not as tiring. After resting on one island for 4-5 days, you can move and explore the other.

Where to stay

In Dominica, tourism is not yet developed, there are no package tours, and hence the infrastructure. Hotels are, but they are literally on the fingers count. And they are unreasonably expensive. Because most of the arriving people come on cruise ships, also sleep there, and therefore they do not need hotels.

You can find lodging on Booking or Airbnb, the latter has more options. Be sure to read the reviews and especially how to get there. Google Maps is certainly a help, but if the island has no address or street names (which is often the case here), then technology is helpless here.

This happened to us three times. First, in the capital, when we were rushing through the streets in the night, following maps and trying to find at least some numbering of houses. About 15 local people came to help us, but they were powerless too. We had to look for neighbors who know other neighbors who rent on this incidentally central street! In the end, with a bit of difficulty and a whole convoy of Dominicans found. From the window we had a wonderful view of the cemetery.

A place with a great view.

Then we decided that it would be nice to rent a place in the jungle and spend a couple of nights there. The hosts sent us all the addresses and even a map link. It seemed impossible not to find a place! But it was not the case, apparently, the Internet and links, they are not very good at using, and the house was on their coordinates on the other side of the island.

So we rented the third house on the coast. The address also, of course, was not the same as listed on the booking, but with the help of another neighbor and an approximate description, we still found the house after a couple of hours of searching.

The first thing to remember is better to contact the owner of the place beforehand, because there are probably no signs to lead you to the place.

Waitukubuli Trail – the longest hiking trail in the Caribbean

If you want to hike while in Dominica, and you are experienced in hiking long distances, you should try this trail. You will need to take plenty of water with you because it will be hot while you are there, but you will be able to enjoy the lush greenery, beautiful blue water, hilly terrain and amazing vegetation.

Along the way you can see beautiful flowers and plants, rocky beaches, and even a quaint footbridge that allows you to walk from one place to another. This is a great place to spend time if you like colorful surroundings and great hiking.

Attractions in Dominica for families with children

Holidays in Dominica will appeal to those children who are ready to learn something new and abandon the “traditional” hobbies for a while. The fact that the island has no specialized children’s tourism industry facilities like amusement parks and water parks. However, a lot of beautiful natural attractions, clean beaches, rich history and comfortable water and air temperature all year round make Dominica a good choice for a trip with the whole family.

The capital, Roseau, is a good place to start. It was founded in the 17th century by the French on the site of an older Indian settlement. It is here you can introduce your child to the history of Dominica by visiting the state museum. Despite its small size, the island was inhabited long enough, and during the colonial wars, more than once was the cause of the clashes between England and France. You can learn about all of this by taking a close look at the collection of artifacts on display at the museum. If your child is more interested in learning about “living” history, then take time for leisurely walks around the city. Roseau was built in the French colonial style and hasn’t changed much since the main building was completed, so it perfectly captures the spirit of the time. The Old Market, the slave market, the stone Catholic Cathedral, the Anglican Church – all these buildings will tell your child more about the history of this amazing place than he or she can find in textbooks.

Cabrits National Park will appeal not only to young naturalists, but also to military history buffs. Boys will be able to imagine the life of a British soldier in the 18th century by walking around Fort Shirley, which has been partially restored in recent years. In the park itself, a child can see not only banana and mango plantations, but also the Indian River, known to many from Pirates of the Caribbean. What child would not want to be on the spot seen in the favorite movie?

For young entomologists, a trip to the grounds of Nozern Forest Park is a must. There are more than fifty beautiful tropical butterflies. However, even if your child does not care about butterflies, the park is still worth a visit – this is the home of the Great Emperor Parrot, a real symbol of Dominica, and several species of birds, which can be found only in the Caribbean. Live in the park and two dozen frogs, and boa constrictor, and thirteen species of bats. In short, assess the physical capabilities of your child, choose the route – and forward to the jungle! Your child will be delighted by the opportunity to visit a beautiful and impenetrable thicket with unusual plants and unique animals. More children’s attractions
