Right on the main street of Gorno-Altaisk, Kommunisticheskiy Avenue, there is a spring that is very popular among residents and guests of the city. The people call this spring “Yrystu and Alyonushka”. This name comes from a sculptural composition next to the spring: on stone pedestals you can see marble figures of Yrystu, the hero of the Altai epos, and Alyonushka, the heroine of a Russian fairytale.

No useful elements were found in the water, but it is notable for its purity and pleasant taste. To drink spring water you usually have to stand in line, because many people like it. When leaving, don’t forget to thank the spirits for the amazing water.

Ulalinskaya Stopover.

In Gorno-Altaisk is a unique monument of archeology, of which few people know, – Ulalinskaya lot, which received its name after the nearby river Ulalinka. Here, on the eastern outskirts of the city, a primitive stop of ancient people was discovered in 1961.

Excavations carried out in the following two decades showed that the site was hundreds of thousands of years old. In other words, Ulalinskaya is the oldest known archaeological site in Siberia. This find has fundamentally revised scientists’ ideas about the period of settlement in Siberia.

Alas, artifacts found during excavations of Ulala stop, including primitive stone products of primitive people are kept in museums – you can’t see anything like that on the site of the stop.

Visitors can take pictures in a specially made “ancient men’s skin”, buy a souvenir and order a tour. But the very possibility to walk around the location of the most ancient human settlement in Siberia seems to be inspiring for many people.

Unstitched log walls and minimized interior finishes allow you to feel the warmth of wood and make the church at home-like comfort. In 2017, a cast in bronze monument to the Venerable St. Macarius was installed next to the church.

More than seventy large and small rivers, not including temporary streams, flow into the lake. Filled with mountain water, the deep lake remains cold throughout the year. In the upper zone even in hot summer days water rarely gets warmer than 10 ° C, so it’s almost impossible to swim in it.

Mountain Belukha

Mountain Belukha (photo)

Mount Belukha is the snow-white queen of Altai and the highest point in Siberia. It is a two-headed peak, divided by a ravine. It is equidistant from three oceans – the Pacific, the Atlantic, and the Indian. The famous philosopher and artist Nicholas Roerich visited these places early last century, studying the roots of Buddhism, and made them famous throughout the world. In 1998 the mountain was included in the UNESCO list of World Natural Heritage Sites “Altai Golden Mountains”.

Belukha is the highest peak in Altai and Siberia. Its peak reaches 4,506 meters above sea level. Three spurs of the Katun mountain range in the Central Altai form a snow-white sparkling crown – the two-headed Belukha.

One of the first explorers of Altai, Vasily Sapozhnikov, connected the name of the mountain with the snow that melts on its slopes. The ancient Turkic peoples called the mountain adyn-Bazhi (Katun peak), Ak-Suru (majestic). The first Belukha ascent was made in 1914 by the Tronov brothers, after whom one of the major glaciers is named.

According to Buddhist legends, this is where the legendary beyond-the-clouds land of the Shambhala gods is located, which is destined to be seen by the chosen few. According to the legend this is the place where Gautama the Buddha came to India and Belukha is energetically connected with the space.

Altai Reserve

Altai Reserve (photo)

The official date of establishment of the reserve is 1929, when a research expedition led by scientist V.I. Baranov was sent to the Altai Territory. But the government of the country has not signed the documents for a long time. Paperwork dragged on for two years. During this time poachers made a habit of visiting the territory of the future reserve and almost killed the marals in the taiga. This turned out to be the last strong argument for the creation of the strictly protected zone.

Today in the Altai Reserve there are over 500 species of algae and lichens and over a thousand species of plants. The reserve is rich in coniferous forests, where larch, Siberian fir and cedar are found. As for fauna, only in the Altai Reserve one can see the reindeer, snow leopard, pink starling, black stork, ounce, wolverine and many other animals and birds, which are included in the Red Book as rare, endangered species.

Bolshoy Chulchinskiy waterfall

Big Chulchinskiy waterfall (photo)

Big Chulchinsk waterfall is the largest cascade waterfall in Altai, which is one of the most popular natural attractions of the region. Located on the territory of the Altai State Reserve.

Big Chulchinsk waterfall is relatively young – it was formed no more than one hundred and fifty years ago as a result of a massive rockfall. The waterfall was discovered in the second half of the twentieth century almost by accident.

The total height of the Chulcha Falls is 160 meters, but of course the water does not fall from such a height – in fact, it is the total sum of all the rapids of the waterfall. Nevertheless, the spectacle is still grandiose. The second name of the waterfall – “Uchar” is translated as “Flying”. And the waterfall is quite consistent with this name – a powerful stream of water flying down the slope with tremendous speed, crashing on the rocks. Standing next to a waterfall, it is impossible to hear each other, even if you shout directly over your ears – so strong the sound of water.

However, the price for admiring this natural wonder is a hard road – the way to the waterfall takes a day, and this route can not be called comfortable. But the magnificent sight is worth it, as thousands of tourists, going to the Great Chulcha Falls every year, prove it over and over again.
