Much attention is given to Bodrum’s role as a diving center, as well as the birthplace of writer Cevat Shakir Kabaagacli, known as “The Fisherman of Halicarnassus.”

Specialists in conchology would be over the moon here. A private collection of about 6,000 shells, representing one-third of all mollusk families, is located on the shimmering display upstairs.

The restored Ottoman dockyard is located directly above the marina. In 1770 Russia destroyed the entire Ottoman fleet at Cesme, rebuilding it took place in shipyards such as this one. It was fortified against pirate attacks in the 18th and 19th centuries by the erection of a watchtower.

Today, art exhibitions are periodically organized here. Ancient tombstones dating from the period when the Latin alphabet replaced the old Arabic-based script are above.

This is the restored remains of the only surviving gate of what was originally a long 7-kilometer wall, apparently built by the ruler Mausolus in the 4th century BC.

In front of the gate with two towers are the ruins of the ditch in which many soldiers of Alexander the Great drowned in 334 BC.

The Amphitheater of Halicarnassus

On a hillside overlooking the main road to Turgutreis, the Amphitheatre of Halicarnassus was built in the 4th century BC, which was capable of holding 5,000 spectators, and in the 3rd century AD, when the famous gladiatorial fights were held, its capacity was increased to 13,000 people.

Today during the summertime concerts and other events are held here.

The mausoleum, an amazing achievement of the Carian ruler Mausolus (376-353 BC), who moved his capital from Milas to Halicarnassus, is truly one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

The only ancient elements that have miraculously survived are the mausoleum’s staircase and tombs, the narrow entrance to the mausoleum and the huge granite stone blocking it, as well as the local drainage system, part of the walls and some large fluted marble columns.

Hall of Glass Shards, which depicts a 16-meter ship that sank in 1025 A.D. The French Tower houses another interesting underwater find, namely the cargo of a traditional Greek ship that sank in the 4th century B.C.

In the Uluburun wreck hall and the adjacent treasury there is the pride of the museum, the excavated Bronze Age artifacts recovered from the bottom of the sea, after several shipwrecks.
