13 things to see in Tel Aviv, Israel

10 things to do in Tel Aviv

Israel is beautiful in every way – from visa-free travel to the diversity of this beautiful land, which is half the size of the Moscow region. It has everything: the sea (three of them), mountains, sands, holy places and much more. But, as usual, I will describe only the points that I managed to do in this visit. Of course, I really hope to continue to get to know this country.

10 things to do in Tel Aviv

1. To take a promenade on all the embankments and beaches of the city.

Because here they are the most: well-groomed – with ideally clean, white sand, modern – everywhere works wi-fi, sports – there is a set of volleyball courts, gyms, bicycle paths. It is real pleasure to walk along the quay with the great view to the sea!

2 Taste falafel

Even if you are far from vegetarianism – this dish is liked by almost everyone. The falafel is deep-fried balls of chopped chickpeas.

The falafel is usually served in pita bread with tehina (sesame paste) and hummus.

The falafel originally “takes its feet” from Egypt, and the Arabs resent (although the Arab and Jewish dish are significantly different) that their invention has become almost a symbol of Israel.

3. Walk through the neighborhoods of Neve Tzedek and Florintin

Two of the most atmospheric and colorful districts of the city. The first is the historic quarter, the predecessor of Tel Aviv (was built behind the walls of the ancient city of Jaffa). The quarter was built according to the European model: the layout is correct, the houses are stone, the roofs – tiled, because it is so fabulous and cozy. The second block borders on Neve Tzedek, but is of course inferior in its bohemianism. A haven for street artists, musicians, and all kinds of creative rabble. You’ll find lots of things to do in this shabby neighborhood – galleries, stylish and tasty restaurants, unusual graffiti, and more. As luck would have it.

Rent a bike and ride it all over the city.

Special bicycle parking with the possibility of renting a car here are literally every three hundred meters, daily pass will cost only seventeen shekels. It’s a pleasure to ride here – there are bike lanes all over the city. So you can see much more than walking on foot.

5. Visit a kosher McDonald’s

Absolutely all Israeli McDonald’s serve kosher food. But only a few branches strictly observe kashrut rules: these eateries do not work on Saturdays and religious holidays, and do not sell dairy products. Incidentally, for the first time in the chain’s history, they have changed their traditional color orientation. Two branches of the fast-food chain in Tel Aviv sported new logos with blue backgrounds (unfortunately we were unable to photograph them).

6. To feel like a real Tel Avivite, living in a cozy apartment in the center (even if only for ten days)

In recent years, I really like living not in hotels, but renting cozy apartments. This way you become, at least for a little while, a local. It’s great to sip tea on the balcony and watch the city wake up and fall asleep.

7. Visit the Ilana Gur Museum

Ilana Gur is one of the most famous artists and sculptors in Israel. Her works during her lifetime are exhibited in major museums and art galleries around the world. The museum building was built almost 3 centuries ago near the port of Jaffa. According to the artist herself, it is from the roof of her house the best view of the sea.

8. Go from one city to another… on foot!

Tel Aviv is quite a young city, founded in 1909, but the nearby ancient Jaffa is known from the XVIII century BC. But in 1950, the two cities merged, and it became known as Tel Aviv-Jaffa.

Now it is possible to walk from the center of Tel Aviv to Jaffa in half an hour along the coast.

Jaffa will take a whole day, because the city is incredible, with a lot of attractions and incredibly photogenic streets.

9. Go to Jerusalem

The capital of Israel and the main center of pilgrimage of all Jews and Christians can be reached in just 40 minutes by car or bus. But I advise you to go there by train, even if it takes 30 minutes longer, you will not regret it. The train goes by the most picturesque place in the mountains, where there are only two strips of rails and the beauty is incredible around. Nothing to say about the city itself! It is beautiful, steeped in history, makes you feel like you’re 20-30 centuries in the past. And even if you are absolutely not religious person, it will still be extremely interesting to look at the Wailing Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Via Dolorosa.

10. Relaxing at the Dead Sea.

Again, Israel is a small country, but very rich in attractions and amazing views. Travel by car is very convenient and easy, the roads are perfect. Thus, just a couple of hours to get from Tel Aviv to the Dead Sea.

To come to Israel and not bathe in it – just a crime. After all, the Dead Sea is the most: the lowest place on earth, the most salty and the most magical. It is impossible to drown here, because the density of the water literally keeps a person of any size on the surface, you can fully relax, read the newspaper and relax.
