A beautiful island in the western Cyclades, Sifnos has remained under the radar thanks to the success of its sisters, Mykonos and Santorini. But little Sifnos certainly deserves more attention. With its traditional Cyclades architecture, tranquil villages, beautiful beaches and laid-back atmosphere, it has many attractions to visit and many activities that will entice visitors of all ages. Here are the best things to see and do in Sifnos.

Take a walk through the medieval town of Castro

The medieval village of Kastro is a fortified rocky village just east of Apollonia, the capital of Sifnos. Kastro was built on the ruins of the former island’s capital and is one of the most picturesque villages in Sifnos with a magnificent view of the sea. Part of the fortress walls still stand today and the village mostly consists of narrow streets, beautiful two-story houses, old mansions, and churches from the 16th century. The name of the village comes from the castle, which was built in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Frankish occupation of the island.

Explore the many churches on the island

Sifnos is known for its many churches. Depending on the sources, it is said that there are between 235 and 365 churches on the island, making the “church spot” an interesting activity when sightseeing. The Chapel of the Seven Martyrs is probably the most popular church. Located at the entrance to Castro, it sits atop a cliff overlooking the sea. On the southeast side of the island, the monastery of Panagia Chrissopigi is also built on a rock, or rather, on a peninsula connected to the island by a bridge. Built in the 16th century, it is associated with much history and myth. In addition, you are sure to find forgotten chapels lost in the middle of nowhere and several churches.
